GN Sir was a genius. No tape recorders,gramphine plates those days.He had Ambal's Poorna Arul. Many of his compositions had wonderful guidance of Ambal .He didn't have the regular gurukulavasa.If without Gurukulavasa he had scaled such a great height in such a short time, it was jnana from the poorva janma.He was an innovator and was never shy of experimentation.His fast rendition of various songs was unparalleled.He had great accompanist's like PMI,Lalgudi,Chowdiah,Pazhani.All those concerts would have been simply great. Loved the anecdotes!! Yes, GNB was indeed a giant among musicians of his day. What a shame that so many talented artists like him left us so early in their lives. One can only imagine how many more musical gifts they could have left this world if they had lived longer. Especially if we consider the enormous enhancements made in recording technologies over the past few decades that have resulted in improved sound quality and fidelity.

Sanjay, I am glad you mentioned Sivaramakrishnan mama. He was a great friend of mine too, may his soul rest in peace. he used to mention that you used to get tapes from him listen to songs and perform in concerts. One such song he mentioned was Gangeyavasandara a mLV rendition that you rendered in Music Academy the same month that you had borrowed the tape from him before the season. Mama and GNB must be having some wonderful sessions together in heaven, and Mama must be in heaven. God Bless Mama1

I am a die hard fan of GNB n fortunate to listen his live concerts in madurai n chennai My fav among all other krithis is maragathavallim A couple of years back sanjay gave a performance in bharathiya vidya bhavan in london n i requested him in email to oblige me in singing this krithi in the concert n he obliged Like me he also enjoyed gnb rendition of this krithi n in one other lecture on gnb sanjay said that maragatha vallim cassette used to travel from him to tm krishna n vijay siva 👍

What is outright phenomenal in this series and even in the previous season was how Thala brings the voice of all others to give the stories more life , here in this episode, we could hear, briefly, imitations of his Dad, Ramesh Chitappa, Grand Aunt, KSK mama, and Mr. Sivaramakrishnan, in the end , Mr. Siva even sounded a bit like Kameswaran from MMKR. Overall, so nice to see hear you once again with your own inimitable style of your musical journey storytelling.

Interesting to hear that your chitappa Ramesh ji would "dismiss you" in favour of continuing listening to GNB via the tape recorder. Not that different from some of us today hooked to our music, merely via a newer device, i.e. mobile and headphones. Lends weight to the French proverb, 'Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose'. Beautiful presentation. When you highlight GNB music, you mentioned about an "UNSUNG MUSICIAN" Dear Sivaramakrishnan uncle. Myself introduced to Sivaramakrishnan mana when I was a college student by his friend Late Ramaswamy Mama. That friendship made new dimensions to my Carnatic Music listening. He got lot of collection of GNB,MLV, Kalyanaraman etc. on spool tapes. I was first time fortunate to hear such a vivid Kalyani, Bhairavi, Shanmughapriya Ragams from Mama's collections. When you mention about "Brocheva Revatura" Khamas (presented in the National program of Music by GNB, That was the only recording available). Sivaramakrishnan Mama once told me that even the composer Muthaih Bagavathar astonished the sangathees incorporated in his Brocheva kriti by GNB. Once again I am grateful & profusely thanking you for giving due respect & credit given on your episode to Sivaramakrishnan Mama who promoted GNB Music to the music world, Music lovers, Music Students & shared his collections generously to his friends. Sanjay! Like you, I am - was - also very close to Sivaramakrishnan mama. Unlike you, I am a mere rasika, and collector of great music. Here is one other characteristic of SRK mama - I bet you know this already: when you (or I, or he himself) picked up spool number 3 or 5 from the left side of the cupboard and gave it to him, he would lovingly load it on to his deck, and fast forward it. He would suddenly stop the machine - and bingo - the song you requested would begin! I have seen this happen so many times, but have never understood how someone could ever have such an ability! He was the ultimate repository of all great music as you say. I have heard him say more than once - "nettaikki Sanjay vandirundan". He named his spools by the major ragams! Inda, idu Kallidaikurichi Todiyakkum - adu Kalyanaraman - MSG Shanmukhapriya, and so on!
