I’d forgotten the compliant peacock! 😄 I saw the troupe perform this and other dances some forty years ago! Amazing that they’re still being performed (obviously with new, younger dancers!) to the same demanding precise choreography. I’d never seen or heard of butoh before seeing Sankai Juku and was completely blown away. All other dance I’d experienced up to that point suddenly seemed utterly irrelevant and frivolous. Later I realised butoh contains different styles but it was Sankai Juku’s expression I was most drawn to. Their ritualistic approach, their movements that seemed an echo of Egyptian wall art brought to life, the starkly simple yet epic sets and a surreality that seems to combine myth, science fiction and nightmare.
