Nightmare and corrupted Nightmare isn't really the same person, I have read the Dreamtale WiKi and it is said that a human who wanted to take some apples from the tree was killed by Nim and now his vengeful spirit came to possess one of the dark apples which is the one Nightmare ate. So yeah, Nightmare is far long gone and the vengeful spirit or the black apple is one controlling his actions now
