I would like to see India emerging as the global market leader in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles(FCEVs) coupled with super efficient solid state batteries. This is perfectly aligned with the Government's polices/target of producing 50 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen per year. If TATAs,and Mahindra can join hands in developing a safe on board system in the cars for storage of hydrogen that can withstand even severe head on collisions at 100Km/hour, cost effective catalytic converters and an excellent hydrogen distribution net work across length and breadth of India, it will be a game changer. China and USA have dominated the Battery operated Vehicles (BEV} markets; China has replaced Japan in affordable BEV segment and USA(Tesla) has replaced Europe in the luxury BEV segment, as Internal Combustion Engines are relegated to the annals of history and museums. China and the USA are too far ahead in the race of BEVs. India if it follows the route of BEVs it is only going to end up as a follower. India has always remained a faithful follower since the steam engine days, extending to Internal Combustion Engines and went on draining India's coffers to import Oil although India entered the space age long time ago with good access to fuel cell technology. No one prevented us from developing FCEV technology for cars except our 'blindly follow-the-west' mindset India must play to its strengths. Blessed with abundant solar energy, mass production of green hydrogen could be made economically viable with a bit of advanced research in photovoltaics and super efficient solar cells. IIT Dharwar is setup to carry out research on photovoltaics and solar cells. If India wins the game of FCEVs, it will no doubt emerge as a world leader in cutting edge transport technology for all modes of transport ie. personal transport, public transport, freight and heavy haulage. India working in collaboration with Toyota Japan(Mirai) can make FCEVs work and make it a mainstream vehicle. FCEVs are the future of automotive industry. That is where I see an opportunity for India (TATAs and Mahindras), Japan (Toyota and Honda) and Europe(Volkswagen). I am sure TESLA who are into all the three critical technology segments ie space(where FCEVs were born), telecommunications(autonomous vehicles) and automobiles(cars and cybetrucks and semis) will certainly come up with world class FCEVs soon. BEVs are only an intermediate step for TESLA. At the end of the day it will be a two horse race BEVs and FCEVs. BEVs are going to be short-lived and will be completely replaced by FCEVs in future. The self weight of batteries of BEVs will become disproportionately high and increase exponentially as the payload and range increases. What is the point in spending most of the precious energy just to lug the self weight of batteries. FCEVs are lighter, more efficient, sustainable and economical from operational benefit cost considerations.. BEVs will win the sprint (in the short term) but FCEVs will win the marathon (in the long term) and rule the automobile market. Why not get into the game early to get a head start and capitalise the potential offered by huge domestic market and win the race before anyone else does it?
