i saw this show last night, in tempe. it was my first ever dci show that i had seen in person, i was in the front row, and that after opening hit i cried like a baby. it was just so incredibly powerful and i know they are gonna improve SO much this season

YAYYYY, this is closest thing to REAL Drum Corps! I'd rather see more shows like this!! They looked great, sounded great and they didn't need all of that singing, and props and expensive stuff on the field. Just my opinion!

I was at this performance. This is an incredible program. SCV is back with vengeance! I am so pleased that SCV is making a huge statement by not using props. The musicianship and technical prowess of SCV were outstanding. The percussion line is DEFINITELY Back. It hasn't missed a beat. The celestial movement (with Fr. Horn solo) while playing with their backs to the audience was simply gorgeous and raised the hair on my arms, but my suggestion would be to have some soft underlying technical prowess as tension (the leitmotif being used in reference to being a vagabond on the road) during the last twenty seconds before settling in on the B-flat major chord. But, man, SCV is back! And by finals, with some fine tuning and adjustments, this corps (without props!) could be the envy of all by showing how you don't need props to win. You just need fantastic players.

I hope whatever corps was rudely rolling in their ridiculously ginormous props into the end zone all throughout Vanguard’s entire show, was HEAVILY penalized. They were literally consuming 10 yards of field competition, that a corp’s allowed to use.

It’s the Flo microphone placement on either 35s. (nobody’s ears are 90 feet apart). There’s phasing on roll passages if the flat lines are offset from the 50. It was much clearer in person.

I appreciate that they didn’t use any props. The front ensemble at the beginning was great however the snare line in the first few minutes was sloppy. I feel this show has a lot of potential in the coming weeks. Loved the color guard at the end, brought great balance. Brass had some hard runs and was pretty clean.

Well done Santa Clara. See young ones, a corps does NOT need all the superfluous bullshit to tell a great story. WELL DESIGNED. This was just horns, drums, the guard, and the pit doing wonderful work that FINALLY gave this old man goosebumps. Woohoo, FINALLY!!!!! This show should win it all because they don’t need props and all the other bullshit the other BANDS need. It’s quite apparent they didn’t have the money for the superfluous crap, and it made the show BETTER. Pay attention other designers, many times less is MORE! Could have done without the trombones, but it was a very short interlude (I guess they figured we paid for them, and we’d better use them). Whatever BAND was moving their bullshit props into the end zone should have had a 50 point penalty for that DISRESPECTFUL crap.

Setting up props in the end zone isn’t really disrespectuful and it’s simply prep. Every corp or marching band does it. Also most other bands don’t NEED props they simply use them to enhance the show or to add to the visual aspect.

@@naruke9373 You’ve missed my points. I don’t care if “they all do it” with regard to using the ridiculous props. That’s ZERO excuse for every band to use them. Most of the time they’re distracting. I also don’t care “if they all do it” with regard to staging props in the end zone - it’s DISRESPECTFUL and there should be rules against it. If the next band can’t get set up in the allotted time, then they should cut down on the superfluous bullshit they put on the field.

Once every season there might be a corp that has a big prop but that’s not common. Now about the end zone, sure maybe there should be rules against it, but there aren’t. Because again it’s just prep, I’m sure every corp with props has plenty of time to set up so time isn’t an issue. Props or not they’d still be in the end zone.

First impression is the uniforms are too dark. The show lacks the "flare" (pun intended) of the Carolina Crown show; however, the music is more relatable.

Strange to complain about props when one of the best shows in DCI history, Babylon, uses them. But I understand coming back why this could be a reset for SCV. Having said that the music sounds strong, but the uniforms are too dark, and the color guard choreo is surprisingly clunky and sloppy. But it’s still early and I’m sure they’ll work out the kinks.

At first I thought the same, but if you are comparing, both SCV and Blue Devils say on their websites that they're marching 165. Bear in mind, when props are used, they spread the players out which makes the group look large. With SCV there are no props to spread them out.

So the drum line did their job. Playing most of the show. Has anyone timed how much the horn line plays and how much they don't and carry their horns around. You could of just left them on the equipment truck. The visual is boring. Blue and Red. Miss opportunity with the power of the horns. Add some color to the show. That big French horn pointing down. Couldn't hear it. There is a reason why the horns play up to the stadium. Your not in a concert hall.
