Lincoln--Do you have the “tuners” on your banjo? It sounds like it. But it appears that you are not reaching to the back of the head with your thumb and forefinger. Rather your are using the side of your finger to set the tuner into action. Am I correct about this?

Yep! Those are Sonny’s Ugly Tuners, designed by Sonny Osborne and sold by him for years. They use two levers, one on each side of the peghead, to flip the cams against the strings back and forth. You can google search Sonny’s Ugly Tuners and see some photos of them.
