I was on Mott St when the quake hit. I'll never forget the sound of that roar.

I still know that sound. It's ingrained in my being. I've never been able to properly describe it to anyone but the few that I've talked to who have experienced it know exactly what I'm talking about.

My dad was driving really close to Nicene when the earthquake happened, he said the roar came before the shaking. It was so over whelming he covered his ears and thought someone had nuked San Jose. Absolute madness.

I was somewhere between Aptos and Capitola in a gas station convenience store looking for some pre World Series snack. After the shaking subsided, I was holding the only bag of chips not on the ground. The owner came in to survey the damage and I offered to pay for my bag and he just told me to get out so, ergh, free chips, I guess.

My Grandparents lived down the beach in Aptos, and were just getting ready to watch their A's play in the World Series Game 3... We lived up in the Tahoe area and we felt the earthquake all the way up there. We also saw it on the live coverage of the World Series when it was interrupted on TV..... We couldn't get hold of my Grandparents till late that evening... phone lines were either down or jammed..... they were thankfully ok.... visited 6 months later and we were shocked at the damage.... no brick chimneys remained. We took a drive through scotts valley/ boulder creek area. lots of damaged roads and buildings. Some knocked off their foundations and multiple areas blocked off and condemned..... I was only 7 years old... I remember it like it was yesterday.......

This happened the day before my birthday; I was supposed to have a party at the Scotts Valley Skating Rink on the 18th. When the quake hit my friend's little brother was trying to scare us by rattling the windows and pretending there was an earthquake. There problem was that when he stopped rattling them they kept shaking and there was this deep rumble you felt more than heard at first... a few years later I moved and was welcomed by the Northridge Quake. Smh.
