The cows and calves are very beautiful and seem to love their environment. Pity they were de-horned! Horns are not only important for the animal's self esteem, they also function as a temperature regulator.
@NoctiDraws7 жыл бұрын
No, these are polled (naturally hornless) cattle. Polled cattle do not have any problems with self esteem. They get along fine. Do you know the benefits of having polled and dehorned cattle? They aren't as dangerous to handlers, their disposition and temperament is great, and there are less bruises and injuries to other cattle and themselves.

@@NoctiDraws I can speak from experience here, I've had horned h3reford bulls, and had baldy cows that had horns, and never not one time had a problem with temperament or docility. Some of the wildest cattle I've ever seen were black simmental cows that weighed about 1600 pounds. And Charolais Angus cross cattle. Seen some crazy ass black Angus cattle. And some damn crazy limousin cross heifers that the mamas was gentle as could be. But it's like anything else. Horned Hereford bulls put the ass in anything you cross em on.

@@treyferguson2965 oh yeah! I agree, some polled cattle can be absolute nutcases and some horned cattle can be as sweet and calm as can be. But to me, polled cattle are not only more aesthetically pleasing, but I feel much safer around them. Especially when showing cattle, the laws in Australia say that led cattle can't have a horn over a certain length (I think it's just over an inch) or they can't be shown. Unless it's part of breed characteristics, like a Longhorn or a Highland. Also, Horned Hereford bulls are beautiful! I think in my comment 4 years ago I was thinking of how horned cattle can figure out how to use them. And if they want to use them, a horn in the thigh doesn't make for a nice day haha

@ originaldeftom I very much doubt that cattle have "self esteem" issues re: their horns! A horned bull might have an advantage over a polled or de-horned bull in a fight. Cattle that run on open range night might have an advantage if horned. This is not true on a small farm. Polled cattle are preferred among dairy cattle

@ wolflady43358 Why would want to cross a big meat breed with either of those two smaller dairy breeds? (Jersey or Guernsey) Dual purpose cattle are available, Shorthorns are famous as a dual- purpose breed. Other smaller dual-purpose Heritage breeds also exist

Being a special breed for hot weather beef production cross breeding with a dairy bovine would not increase productivity. I do not have enough background in dairy breeds to suggest a suitable alternative. Good Luck.

+phix01 Unfortunately as beautiful as they are they haven't figured out a way to make hamburger & steaks without cows having to die. Feeding humanity IS a big and vitally important business, and lean beef happens to be a great source of protein. What makes me so excited about the Santa Gertrudis is their fine efficiency in converting grass to meat and their robust health in the meantime. Thoroughly enjoyed this video, AgSmart- thanks for posting!
