To those who like to criticize. Your time would be better spent enjoying whats good rather than focusing on what you think is bad. When you focus on the blemishes you miss everything else. I guess we all see what we want to see. Being critical is a reflection of what and who you are. I am gonna go enjoy some more of the endless supply of live music that KZbin offers, ill leave you here to peck apart a golden goose for being to yellow.

. . . or we may call it a universal language that knows no politics nor religion. It becomes an art when played by a musician. Playing an instrument is skill, the degree of which is observable by listeners. For example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4Cql6Oamc-bn80 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3e5dHirpL5qp68 -the same song played by two different guitar players.

Never was a big fan of McLaughlin, but Santana was like having a nanny growing up. You can see the spiritual connection these two share in some way.

For me it was the other way around. I've been a fan of John McLaughlin since his days with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I liked his iconic collaborations with Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu the most. For decades I thought Santana would just throw his handful of licks from Woodstock over every song he's played on since then. I thought he was completely overrated. But this recording proves me wrong. Thank you for that.

Nice combination of two different personalities. A few words for all those who always want to force a playing music together into a competition. Some guitarists spend a lot of time and effort in finding and rendering a beautifully coloured voice. A sound that touches your heart. Others work on complexity. Others on scales and speed. When watching guitar videos on KZbin you often get the impression that the number of likes depends on how many notes are produced per second. I fully agree with Michael-David Bushman. Please stop making a contest out of it. Sit back and enjoy the music of two great artists.

I would quote a sentence from SUN RA about critics in general: "I'm moving forward with my music, those who want to listen to, they're welcome i'm like the birds singing, those who don't , don't have to" and a John Mc Laughlin sentence about Carlos Santana : “Even in the mid-'60s, he had a sound and a lyricism that I absolutely loved. The way he would play was the perfect complement to what I would do. We played last year in Switzerland (at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival)… It was lovely. We went on stage, and it was like time had stood still. A very special guitar player and a very special human being. “ -- John Mclaughlin

I lived with 'Love Devotion, Surrender' for a year in 75-76, and Coltrane was in the background of that. It helped pass a cold winter in Beijing. JMcL is a master, and Santana is not a bad guitarist. The original version of this tune by Comtrane was done in the hard bop era.

I like the way Carlos varies his attack by using his trademark triangular UFO plectrum for the mandolin vibrato, and then just his finger tips for the softer single notes. It goes without saying that John McLaughlin's chord work is peerless. Superb playing by both parties...

Nothing but a clear explanation of why I don't need to know you to know that only someone who has no clue what music is would comment about a guitar duet, that only one of the players was making "the real music". You have made it clear I was wrong about this part of my last comment: "You might be astute". I take it back; you've proven that it was a false statement. You really got me on that one.
@ArtfulMind

Why criticize? Rather, try just to be good people, (if you play) learn your instrument well, and appreciate whatever value you can get from any artist brave enough to put themselves out there for the consumption of critics. Playing sometimes entertains lots of people, and that's not a bad thing; that vs. playing for our own ego. Music is felt... it's a vibe. Lots (and lots) of people "feel" the Carlos Santana vibe... how is that fodder for criticism?
@einarabelc5

Because to a certain degree, that's how you learn. I used to be a fan of Santana, then I discovered Jazz. On e thing doesn't deter the other. Only in popular music where being unqualified is encouraged.

You might be astute, but your comment was not. Obviously Santana is out of his league with JM, as are most guitarists. But to say "I know which guitar is making the real music" is to completely deny the music. No matter how much better one player is, when 2 play together, it's ridiculous to imply "the real music" is only being played by 1. Santana played the melody with respect; just because it wasn't virtuosic isn't reason to deny his part in the music; that was nonsense.
