Amused by how some of the comments below are about how Santana can't 'comp a band and the jazz fusion played by Shorter and these masters of jazz is "a mess". This African based music is as lively, beautiful and powerful as it can be and I love it.

Every person commenting here that Carlos Santana can't hang with jazz musicians is missing the point and showing bad faith when it comes to assessing artistic achievement. Carlos has collaborated with jazz greats since 1971, and the respect is clearly mutual, since he has guested on a number of luminaries' albums and had compositions dedicated to him by a number of great musicians in the genre. Music is a conversation, not a vocabulary contest. Carlos is a powerful voice is in his own idiom-- one he helped create-- and fluent and soulful enough to compliment almost anyone. That's why people love him. There may be a minimum technical threshold for artistic greatness-- one that shifts according to idiom and medium-- but beyond that, expression is what counts. If we judged most of these posters by a similar standard regarding their skills in language and logic, they'd be required by law to shut the fuck up. Ranking musicians is juvenile, so stop smearing your feces everywhere; if you don't like it, leave it alone.

Santana just doesn't know how to comp behind a jazz soloist using harmonic jazz progressions. I think Pat Metheny would have been appropriate here. Then Pat could have busted out with his Roland GR-300 guitar synth on the guitar solo!

Carlos is really not musically educated enough to play real jazz! Everything he does is by ear. But also the mechanical layout of the guitar would make it difficult for almost any player, with the exception of Alan Holdsworth, to hang with a sax player. The guitar's layout sort restricts the player to play certain shapes and patterns. I think the trumpet has a similar problem. That's why sax players are king in jazz!
