Its a minor 1-4-2-5 progression for the verse, where the 2 is a half diminished or, i - iv7 - ii(b3b5b7) - V7. The chorus is 4-1-4-1-5 or iv7 - i, - iv7 - i - V7. If you have trouble understand minor progressions like I did as first, you can also think of it in Major as a 6-2-7-3 as Cm is Eb maj's cousin where the 7 chord is usually the half diminished chord in a major key. As a horn player I never learned this stuff well enough. Even as a bass player, didn't care that much. But as a new guitar player...yep...you gotta know and practice this stuff.

I believe playing upward tunes in melodic minor and downward in Aeolian will also work. Harmonic minor can be used, but should be carefully used to taste. There is a lot of musical heritage from old Europe romantic and folklore melodies borrowed within "Latin music". That makes it so great. The mix between Caribic rhythms and native tunes, romantic European music heritage , and blues.
