I have just reached this stage of planking my own Santisima Trinidad. Without your videos I think I may have given up. But by watching you , the top half of the ship around the big curve on the bow and the tricky curve at the back ( I broke quite a few strips) has come out beautifully. I have no doubt that if I continue following your videos the entire hull will come out just as well. Just wanted you to know how much the work you do is appreciated. Plus, love seeing Wolf :)

@@andre-dx4yw I believe OcCre is one of the best companies and for me the best one up to this date from all the companies that i made models. I am waiting to receive Montanes and HMS Beagle from OcCre. As soon as i get the models i will start building Montanes. :)

@@JohnsWoodenShips thats great John! because after looking at the frigates i decided on montanes because its such a great looking ship the stern gallery looks really good and a nice shape. @@andre-dx4yw I will do another series exactly like Santisima. It's very hard to do it live, just imagine that to create a video of 30 minutes running time i need to film about 30 or 35 videos and edit them. It's very hard.

I have been waiting for this! Thanks for making these videos, I am very much enjoying following along. With the thinning of the planks, is it guesswork as to how much they need to taper? I imagine you still need to measure and make some adjustments (more, or less tapering) along the way down in order to keep the planks straight/level?
@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind words! It depends from the curve of the Bow. Normally you make the wood strip to end up around half the size. Any less and you might end up with broken strips.
@4englishlies8755 жыл бұрын
Great video just a thought because here in the USA they tell us to flair the bulk heads so that the planks can get glued to the full bulk head instead of the just the edges- in this case the right side of the bulk head. But we still thin the plank like you have. The question is which one did you find simpler to do?
@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Both ways needs measurement and they are difficult because of the curves of the ships hull. I prefer the way in this video but if needed (because of the curves) i can change the planking way from the middle and below.

good videos, the skinny glue tip does it get clogged when using it, do you need to use a different one every time or can it be cleaned and reused?

Hi John, Just wondering about bending the planks for the keel I don't have a soldering iron, is there another way to do this? Thanks.
@JohnsWoodenShips3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use an iron for clothes but you have to have really soaked in water wood strips. Some people boil the wood to make it like rubber. That is a way of one wood strip per day :) No reason to go there :)
@danielhackett26155 жыл бұрын
John, enjoying your build very much. You are teaching us very well. Question about reinforcing the planks with white glue, wouldn't using wood glue be more secure in the long run as it dries hard and doesn't reactivate with humidity changes or other moisture like white glue? Moving on to part 12 now, thanks again for posting these videos.
@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind words Daniel!!! The white glue when it dries becomes transparent and also make a bond that has some elastic and cannot be broken. Also because the wood has pores the white glue doesn't get absorbed like the cyanoacrylic glue, but you have one big problem with white glue, it takes 5 hours to dry. You do not have problems with humidity unless the model is going to be in water (there are wooden models that can take motors and R/C), if that so you don't have to use white glue. I guess you can use another type of glue as long as it is transparent and makes a strong bond.

Hi John, is steaming a plank better than soldering iron? And I can’t find those S glue tips anywhere. But I did manage to get 3packs of small tubing from hobby shop. They said it was specific to superglue . I think it will fit into tip opening very tight after I break tube nozel seal. Thanks my friend, john
@JohnsWoodenShips4 жыл бұрын
I do not use steam because it takes a lot of time to boil the wood and also a lot of time to dry it. With the soldering iron it's much much quicker. The tubes are here : www.super-hobby.com/products/Dozownik-do-klejow-CA-PVA-UV-10szt..html help your self :)

It's weird when you consider that a beginner like me would be tempted to get a cheaper kit to practice on before moving on to more expensive ones. But seems like it's worth spending the money to get a high quality kit so you'll have an easier time of it when just starting.
@JohnsWoodenShips4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend not to buy an expensive model for your first kit. Even though wood does forgive mistakes there are some points that a mistake could be disastrous.

If you mesure the length at every ribs, you'll know the difference at every one. You then count how many strips is needed to cover the large rib and diminish the width of the strip at the narrow end and then your strips will go all the way and you wont have to restart at the kiel.
@JohnsWoodenShips4 жыл бұрын
You cannot make the strip very narrow at the end because they will break. So you have to keep them at 2-3 mm the lowest. Also at a certain point ant this model the curve changes a lot, so you have to change the way you do the planking.
