Thank you so much for sharing your build. You are the only one I've seen that explains each step. The others either just blow through the process in a couple of minutes or only show the finished build. Keep up the great work !

Hi John. I drill out a large block to hold the bowsprit while I add the wrapping, blocks etc. Busy today on the gun ports, error on plan as they don’t line up with the decks.
@JohnsWoodenShips5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim! Yes this could help a lot on the wrapping! I had the same prob;em with the gun ports at the San Juan model, it's is a pain in the a... to make it right.

Thank you very much John!!! Yes, i put it in reverse so i wouldn't break the walnut joint. It is a very fragile piece.

Hello I am new ship model maker (hobby) I just buy H.M.S. Beagle - OcCre and ordered the tools. But still have no idea what paints and sealer varnish and etc. to use (brands and property’s they mast have) And I think maybe you can help me to choose what I will need for my firs ship making H.M.S. Beagle ? Thx and I really like your videos and work.

Hello my friend, welcome to the wooden ship modelers! For the colors i prefer Humbrol colors. They have a big variation of colors in Matt and Gloss, also in metallic. You just have to pick the right color shade for your model according to the pictures. Now for the wood sealer i use Nitro wood sealer No 1419 and Nitro thinner. Also i use varnish for Yachts (i prefer gloss) and white spirit as the thinner for varnish and colors. I do not like acrylic colors and varnish, i use them only if i do not have an alternative. You are going to need 2 types of glue. You will need white glue for wood (the quick type ,it takes 5 hours to dry) and cyanoacrylic glue (i use the thin one). For brands you can choose anything you wish except for the colors. I buy my colors and some other staff from here : www.super-hobby.co.uk/catalog/Enamels-15186720.html

Hi vytautas, it will sort of up to you to try what you like most. I see that John likes Humbrol, which is imo not acrylic. Personally i only use acrylic since years. The advantage is these are water based and don,t have an odor. I use vallejo, they have different colour schemes and choices of more than honderd colours (mostly tank and aircraft oriented - stil more than enough for wood colouring - i have done more than 10 ships with them). For the hull and mast i combine them with DIY coloured varnish, for the deck, pencil dust can do wonders to weather it. Good luck

Do you have plans to make a video that goes over the materials and tools that you use or reccomend for your projects? I want to get into the hobby and it's a bit overwhelming to figure out.

Hi Mark! I have made already a video like this. It was one of my first videos, it is not as good as the ones in this series but you can get your information you need. Here it is : kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4LYZKWOZZyCidU

I've had the same problem with attaching that small piece with the right leaning (at 16:00 of the video) and i've found that the solution is to use a rounded rasp to trim the holes to the desired measurements!

Yes this way can work too, it will only take longer but it will be more precise.
