WOW. A live version of "Sleepwalk"from the 1950s..... no question the prettiest instrumental recording from the RocknRoll era.🎸

I’d say the mid 60s and 70s was the rocknroll era. It was more exploring surf in the 50s and 60s when it came to most popular rock anyway

To the question " Was the conversation rehearsed..." Rest assured, particularly in early television which was mostly live but after 1956 big budget shows like this one were sometimes taped in advance, the interaction with Como was rehearsed AND timed out. And to complete the picture as it were, this one was likely originally broadcast in COLOR but film transferred in black & white.
@gb-jg1ud2 жыл бұрын
Yeah at the time they recorded these by actually aiming a film camera at a live television feed that was synced. So they probably just used black and white. Most television receivers were black and white anyway.

Not true at all. Como regularly featured younger upcoming talents on his TV show; even inviting some back for multiple appearances on subsequent shows. He seemed to particularly admire Bobby Rydell's talents, as can be seen from other KZbin videos. When the Everly Brothers appeared on his show they later said Como was the first 'star' they had met who treated them with respect.

Darin was a good friend. He told me the anecdote. He was very hurt that Como, whom he admired up until that fateful day, disliked him .I have no need to make this up, or to play one upmanship with you. If Como ever publicly praised Bobby, I can assure you that Darin never knew about it. And I was in contact with him up until the week before he died. I know it is hard for you to believe that someone else could know the truth. Let's discontinue this discussion. I don't need a new pen pal. .

Perry Como wasn't the brightest bulb in the pack. Nor was he the charming guy he appeared to be. He didn't like" young upstarts", especially the one's with talent. Sad but true.
@fiddlerpin12 жыл бұрын
Como could have at least ask S and J some decent questions and not the stupid stuff he said. "Were did you get it?' Sounded like he thought they stole it or something.
@anya72811 жыл бұрын
Now you're just making it up as you go along! Nice try, though. Care to back up your contention that "Como 'notoriously' disliked young male singers that he perceived as a threat to his considerable popularity"? Surely "the classic and well known example" (get real!) of Bobby Darin making one appearance on the Kraft Music Hall when Como hosted isn't what you base your opinion on. Especially since Como was known to publicly praise Darin's talents, never ducking the issue.

The first part where they all held hands was kind of corny but Sleep Walk was pretty good. Could have done without that other song though.

Como had no choice over the young talent segment. That call belonged to the tv network. Como had the final word about who returned for more appearances. That was (and still is) a courtesy extended to the star by the producer. Como notoriously disliked young male singers that he perceived as a threat to his considerable popularity. The classic and well known example was Bobby Darin, whose one and only appearance was "Mack The Knife". The Everly's & Rydell had talent, but not like Darin.
