Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso | Boca | NO

Il Santuario del SS. Crocifisso di Boca sorge a metà strada tra Boca e Grignasco, in mezzo a boschi ombrosi e colli coltivati a vigneti.
Secondo la storia, l'origine del santuario risale ad una cappella che si trovava ad un chilometro dal paese di Boca, in cui vi era raffigurato il Divino Crocefisso, con un angelo che raccoglie nel calice il sangue zampillante del costato di Gesù e in basso due figure che ricordano i defunti. Una semplice rappresentazione, richiamo di fede ai viandanti. La devozione, già forte, per la Cappella crebbe e si divulgò verso la metà del 1700 in seguito alla guarigione di un fanciullo epilettico e alla liberazione di un mercante assalito da alcuni ladri.
L'afflusso sempre maggiore di devoti rese necessaria la costruzione di una prima chiesa, la quale risultò insufficiente col crescere delle folle. Si arrivò così all'attuale maestoso tempio di impianto neoclassico, opera dell'architetto novarese Alessandro Antonelli. La prima pietra fu posta nel 1822, e la costruzione terminò dopo tante fatiche e peripezie nel 1917.
L'Antonelli non poté portare a termine l'edificio, che non appare sormontato dall'alta guglia prevista dal progetto. Il progetto antonelliano prevedeva infatti la realizzazione di un'opera dalle caratteristiche eccezionali: un tempio lungo 45 metri a tre navate con 26 colonne, una navata centrale alta 51 metri, un pronao con 16 colonne alte oltre 10 metri, una torre campanaria di 119 metri. Lo studio originale fu poi ridimensionato per ragioni economiche.
Il Santuario si presenta oggi con una scalinata d'accesso e un vasto porticato; l'interno si apre con un'ampia volta a botte di 17 metri di corda, sopra un solo ordine di colonne. Il complesso architettonico, per quanto modificato rispetto al progetto originale dell'Antonelli, mantiene un carattere di grande eleganza e maestosità. Ancora oggi è meta di frequenti pellegrinaggi.
