I was stationed in 1972-73 at a small United States Air Force site further up the road beyond the monastery at the top of the mountain. The purpose of the site was the relay of microwave communications. There were about 100 of us. Many of the married airmen lived in Avelino at the bottom of the mountain. I used to frequently drive past the monastery and once went inside. I was unaware of the museum and exhibits. Thank you for taking me further inside with this video. Molte Grazie.

I worked up there too in the power plant in 91 and lived in Monteforte. I miss that little town.

@@BradMeehan I wonder when the USAF removed its microwave relay station from Monte Vergine. I remember the power plant well. I worked in the small administrative office for our commanding officer on site. If you use Google Earth you can trace the road up to the former site and see what it now looks like.

@@bobmilbourn6781 I was there when it closed in 93. We were down to maybe 10 people total (including the italian civilians who worked there) when we shut down the generators for the last time and turned the lights out. It's now just a pad of concrete up there! Great memories of working 6PM to 6AM and seeing the sun come up from the top of the mountain.

@@BradMeehan I"m sorry I never toured the Monte Vergine sanctuary in person. This tour on KZbin shows me what I missed. I had thought it was a monastery and I would be intruding on the monks if I attempted to enter.

SALVIAMO IL SANTUARIO DI MONTEVERGINE,PATRIMONIO DELL'UMANITA' - L'Abate beda Paluzzi lancia l'allarme : " Le raffiche di vento forte fanno volare le lamiere dal tetto come fossero cartoni,cosi' la neve crea crolli,muffe e l'acqua penetra negli interni.Sistemiamo anche secchi per raccogliere l'acqua che trasuda da pareti e tetto.Fate presto,servono risorse." ( le riprese video sono state effetuate nel mese di dicembre 2012 )
