संवाद # 20: Archaeologist & Prof. Vasant Shinde on how Rakhigarhi disproves Aryan Invasion theory

Prof. Vasant Shinde is internationally renowned archaeologist and former Vice-Chancellor of the Deccan College, Pune. Prof. Shinde has been a pioneer in archaeological research for almost 40 years, specialising in the Protohistory of South Asia as well as Field Archaeology.
He has directed a vast number of excavations around the country, from Harappan sites in Gujarat and Haryana to Chalcolithic sites in Madhya Pradesh and the Deccan, to Protohistoric and Early historic Sites in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Presently, he has been directing a very prestigious research project at the largest Harappan site of Rakhigarhi in Haryana.
Several crucial elements of South Asian archaeology, from hitherto unknown protohistoric cultural phases to models of urbanisation in Mewar, Rajasthan, owe their discovery to him. He has initiated several levels of International Collaboration with Institutes around the world, bringing Indian archaeology to a truly global level. He has established the Society of South Asian Archaeology (SOSAA) with a view to promoting young archaeologists and further global collaboration.

DECCAN university used its private fund for rakhigarhi also. U know their are few universities in India who have excavation license and what conditions need for excavation funds, permission etc. Rakhigarhi own society after difficult work accepted to build museum.

The pagan Arabs weren't "tasked with preserving" their pagan religion during the advent of Islam. Roman cities which keep getting discovered in the Middle East were not given to those living there to be preserved. Civilization keeps moving along. What is important is to report facts as they are according to what archeological evidence points to, not with a colonial agenda. Also, the British didn't discover the Buddha or Buddhism or Ashoka, just as they didn't "discover" India. Indic religions don't *make* the distinction between "Hindu" and "Buddhist". This distinction is made by non-Indians who look at *philosophies* as *religions* . The fact that this implicit in your question demonstrates your lack of understanding of how Indic systems work.

Saraswati river is a much talked about perennial river in Rigveda so if it is said that it dried up around 1900bc so Vedas describing it as a perennial river must be talking about the river existing thousands of years back. Civilisations don't flourish in a short time. It might have taken thousands of years to build-up a civilisation around the Saraswati river. We would appreciate if some more light is thrown on Vedic culture as well as its antiquity in relation to Saraswati culture. We are keenly looking forward to Prof Shinde's report on Rakhigarhi. It seems the present day Bharatha Natyam dancers still performs this pose of this dancing figurine with flowers in their head. Watch the attire of a South Indian priest. He covers his body's upper part with a cloth in a crossed way covering one of his shoulders and part of the torso. He doesn't put on a shirt. He also maintains a trimmed beard. Both these descriptions can be seen in the picture of the Harappa priest figurine.

Fantanstic talk by Prof. Shinde, thanks Vaad. The most important piece of puzzle which now remains to be solved is the deciphering the language of Saraswati-Sindhu civilization. One obivious follow up is, if they could write (as we know from the seals found), and they are the same as Vedic people, then were the Vedas perhaps written in the script which has been so far undeciphered?
