But, this shouldn't be surprised right? SAO just had the good timing to be aired just when the ''youtube gaming'' became a thing and everyone just praised it because it was an anime about a... game, and thats it. I think that dubstep music is a also a period piece and that by 2050 im gonna by saying what the fuck i was hearing when i was a teen. But this happens with everything that becames popular by hype. I am correct, Sir Tusk? The 80s and 90s were the times of the super machos and super soldiers, the 2010s are gonna be remembered by their obssesion with fantasy worlds and music trying to be ''futuristic'', and anonymous, i suppose.

Take classic rock, people that grew up during the 60's - 70's still love it, and people growing up now even like it. I think things like that are a testament to the quality of the work. While there are a lot of people that like SAO still, I think the main difference is what they stand for. Rock music was something new and fun that caught people by surprise, while SAO is just pandering to shut-in otakus. It doesn't break ground or give us anything of substance to grab on to. I can't say everything that gets hyped up is eventually seen as shit, its just that SAO and all the anime and light novels its spawned are a special breed only relevant because of the time period.
@SovietRipper8 жыл бұрын
TuskTheOtaku Yes of course. What i was meaning is that the most of the things hyped up in this decade tend to lack quality. Yeah, we have things like game of thrones or TWD that are hyped as shit and they're actually good, but those are exceptions. I was mostly pointing out that SAO started this chain effect just when the gaming industry was becoming the thing is today, back in 2011 with gaming youtube channels and blahblah. I also noticed that all of this massively popular shows pierces the only-otaku-fanbases, yeah, yeah i know that series are pandering to otakus, but to this day i still hear people saying that they got into anime thanks to SAO and im hearing the same with re:zero, who is this effect possible? Animes that are for a small niche suddenly becames mainstream and popular, with re:zero this was even more obvious because even famous youtubers/ twitch streamers started to recommend that show, people who know almost nothing about anime, ended fueling the hype and popularity of that show (yeah i know im going off topic, im drunk and is fucking hot in my place). I heard a theory once months ago that Re:zero actually tried to hook up every audience that it could, not just the otakus, and sometimes i think is right since from the marketing point it seems it was success, look at the legion of casuals or first time anime watches, despite how bad was as a work.

I think the whole being a geek thing has become less niche over time. Just think about all the channels on youtube or even some celebrities that will call themselves a nerd or a geek. Its almost praised now, so I think SAO appeals to those kinds of "geeks". I think the whole re:zero thing comes down to it feeling familiar. People have seen or heard of something similar to it, so they feel its a safe choice. People have a hard time trying new things on their own so obviously this fad appeals to a lot of people.
@SovietRipper8 жыл бұрын
TuskTheOtaku yeah your comment is spot on. Basically pop culture and internet has been adopting and naturalizing ''geek/ nerd culture'' and now even the otaku culture. I mean, its not a bad thing if we keep improving about that material, but we're in a stale state now, sadly.

I love the Witcher we need a Witcher anime.

I'm sure the games do a fine job adapting the source material. Honestly I can't think of a good way to do any anime based off of an RPG.

You really expect me to believe you, that people 20 years from now will think SAO is dumb, when you yourself can't even bring this up without being drunk? I don't think so. People will look at it and point out how the studio completely screwed it up and wonder if a different studio can remake it to be better. Because SAO is the only MMO themed/trapped in a game anime that comes closest to being good. If you and the rest of the hatedom can't accept that, then tough shit.
