What are your techniques for visual storytelling?

That is a great question. I haven't been telling any good ones. The thought never occurred to me. I just made glorified postcards. B&H videos like this are slowly turning on the lights in my brain!

The last 2 minutes of the presentation where Sapna spoke to an audience question made the entire presentation worth watching. Showing her passion to what photography represents for her and help process the difficult moments of life into a compelling story. What an important message... thank you!

Thank you very much for this comment, I was about to exit the video and saw it. It was very moving and important…. If it wasn’t for you, I would’ve exit the video and lost the chance to hear the most important part of the video…. The human side of it.

Wow!! where has this wonderful lady been all our photographic life? This is probably one of the best lectures you can watch to bring images to life for the viewer and pass on that connection with the photo subject. This is a must before all the worry about DOF, lenses, and all the other bits. It just makes so much sense to understand this visual language concept and how powerful it was in her Q&As you could feel her raw emotion about the images. A very impressive video and learning tool from a very impressive lecturer.

Omigosh, I absolutely LOVE this approach to making pictures. Thank you so much for a wonderful and inspiring talk!! I have always been an avid reader of fiction and I can't tell you how the parallels presented here in associating verbal language with visual language cues has helped me understand what the heck people are talking about when they say pictures should 'tell a story'. I get it now! Thank you, Sapna, truly.

Thank you Dr. Reedy. Your presentation connecting the concepts of verbal language to "Visual Language" is very enlightening. It is a language we can all "understand" some can "Read" and even less can "Speak". Hopefully my own cave paintings will improve thanks to you.

The MOST powerful presentation I’ve ever seen on this topic. Sapna really opened my eyes and gave clarity to why we see things the way we do. This is something I’ve often wondered about but never really took the time to analyze or understand. Most people are born and raised in regions of the world where language is read from left to right, top to bottom. We compose and are most comfortable viewing images in those directions as you allude to in your lecture. I’m wondering if photographers who live in countries where language is read from right to left or bottom to top compose their images based on the directionality of their native language. Or are the rules of composition simply universal. Just a thought.

That is a very good question. Although how many cultures are so secluded that they would not be constantly exposed to other languages and worldwide images. Perhaps that may dilute one's original preference ?

❤ this presentation but I found the HDR editing a little heavy handed. Having been to several of these places the actual processed pictures are not quite realistic. To each his own so IMO a little less editing would have been better. Her composition is exquisite. Definitely a lecture that fires up the spirit to go out and shoot

Such an accomplished photographer and artist. But ... you must admit that part of your secret is time and luxury of traveling to the far ends of the earth (magical places) and waiting for fleeting light. That is the Ansel Adams secret. Wait for hours for the right moment. Then post processing simply enhances the magic. You have to understand weather conditions.

To be honest I find this kinda landscape photography a bit lame, it's always the same locations shot with the same overprocessed look. It all looks like it's taken by the same photographer. Just superficial pretty postcards, nothing more.
