*Sapnon Ka Chhalaang: The Immeasurable Leap of a Dream* The coming of age genre serial 'Sapnon Ki Chhalaang' telecast on Sony is, arguably, the best show(n) on the small screen. The surreal serial with a sermon like serious 'sandesh': 'Dreams don't work unless you do', initiates us to the content and intent that is to follow with the 'show stopper' (pun intended) anthem: 'मेघा रे, मेघा रे, मत परदेस जा रे...' A typical middle class, conservative and concerned, over protective and over possessive Yadav 'parivaar' from Jhansi tries in vain to stop their academically brilliant and ambitious daughter Radhika Yadav aka Megha Ray from taking her 'Sapnon Ki Chhalaang'. But, the university topper from the sluggish and sleepy Jhansi rebels and succeeds in taking a lep, a leopard like 'chhalaang'. And, with her single minded sincerity and 'sapne', she travels a distance that is geographically less but culturally more long! The 'laang chhalaang' is more a leap of belief or faith outside the boundaries of reason to a city bound by freedom, aspirations, dreams, hopes, promises, opportunities i.e. Mumbai, the busiest and fast paced city of gold typifying workaholism holistically to the hilt and earning a Maximum ~ Minimum antithesis: the maximum city that sleeps only to the minimum, the city where life is hectic, time is at a premium, people are in a hurry and everyone is striving and struggling to reach the destination or the duty end! The Jhansi ki 'mulgi' joins the jaunty Mumbaikars! Radhika belies her frail and fragile appearance and comes across as a strong epitome of confidence, intelligence, determination, focus and guts; she is a go getter, ready to accept and take up a challenge with a never give up attitude. Inexplicably and sadly, she goes weak at the knees when it comes to having an interface with certain members of her closely knit 'kunba' headed by an upbeat grandmother, the matriarch of the Yadav 'parivar'; a timid and tired looking 'taau'; a socially awkward and ungainly aggressive father who is permanently in a moral panic with exaggerated concern for his only daughter; the two domesticated mammas who are more educated, matured, practical, sensible, supportive and wise i.e. the sympathetically stern 'badi maa' and the emotionally strong mother who is the one and only pillar of strength to her ambitious daughter; the two older chauvinist brothers with dollops of icy nonchalance to their attitude and nil or negligible credibility towards matters feminine. In fact, together with the two older menfolk, the brothers almost adopt the customary 'haan mein haan' attitude to stall women empowerment. And, not to forget, the toddler brother added for spice. Radhika balances her ambivalent feelings of love and hate, rather like and dislike, approval and disapproval for her family in Jhansi and framily in Mumbai comprising the three free wheeling girls, each one with her own priorities and problems and with whom she shares not only a posh apartment but also their 'sukh dukh'. The camaraderie between the fabulous foursome is heartwarming. Equally heartwarming are the friendly and helpful neighborhood couple with a grown up daughter and an adorable and lovable, cool and casual 'stalker' son whose heart beats, flutters and pounds for Radhika. Is it a two sided affair or one sigh~dead is to be seen! They are offset by yet another cantankerous and garrulous femme fatale resident who is the secretary of the society and who is all set to spell distress and disaster and screw up the bliss and peace of the girls. Radhika has more challenges to face in the office which include tackling an intimidating boss, a tough task master who has forgotten to smile and who spares no opportunity to snub and run down Radhika and her capabilities (or is it her way of motivating Radhika?); a jealous, repellently smooth and slimy male teammate; a chauvinistic group leader and a few empathetic and supportive colleagues. Those living outside the city also get a glimpse of the life in Mumbai and the mumbaikars, full of zeal, zest, zing and zindagani. They also form the slice of life in the serial: the lazy watchman, the slacker servant woman, the honest auto driver... A 'dheeth' (brash and brazen) that Radhika is and likes to call herself, her 'dheeth'ermined 'Sapnon Ki Chhalaang' from Jhansi to Mumbai, the maximum city, the 'Mayanagari', the 'City of Dreams', is actually a big leap of humanistic attributes like confidence and conviction and incalculable gifts from God like belief and faith which collectively strengthen her resolve to trust Him and all that He has in store for her regardless of the challenges faced by her and the circumstances she is in. Kudos to the entire team: Sony Entertainment Television, the producers Herumb Khot and Nilanjana Purkayasstha, the director Arif Ali and the entire cast. Particular mention is made of: *Radhika*: the protagonist; one can literally see the dreams in her eyes and feel the outside realities stifling and suffocating her 'sapne' and challenging her 'chhalaang'. Her 'hair biting' disorder helps her emerge overwhelmingly overjoyed and put things in order. *Suman*: as Radhika's mother, she is A for avant garde, B for brilliant, C for charismatic; she is an epitome of elegance, grace and poise balancing well the manifold mantles placed on her shoulders. *Sreemoyi*: she is utterly butterly delicious; simply superb as the carefree, frank, outgoing, socially confident 'makaan malkin'; her impish charm, childlike honesty, bewildered looks make her more adorable and lovable and enliven the mood and 'mahaul'. *Priyal*: her cold, emotionless and intimidating looks, discomforting demeanor, unfriendly mien and manner send shivers down the spine. Her silence speaks and speeches, yell. That is Pri~yell! *Vrinda*: though she has less to do, she is extremely pleasant and warm, the kind of kindhearted neighbours all of us would love to have. To be fair to the menfolk, one endearing performance is of *Abhishek* who impresses with his effervescent smile and cool and casual mannerisms. He need not stalk girls with his winsome personality; they would swoon and fall head over heels for him. 'Sapnon Ki Chhalaang', true to its title, has touched the right chords and won the hearts and empathy of millions. It has taught family values, individually inspired and motivated a lot of youngsters, particularly girls in the mofussil towns of India to pursue their ambitions and dreams . It has instilled confidence in the conservative parents from small towns as a sort of trendsetter ushering a paradigm shift in the way a dream needs to be dreamt on the dreamy path to fulfil the dreams with a 'chhalaang': Leap of Faith! *Manohar 'Mohabbat' Iyer* 98205 35910 PS: For Arif Ali, the man at the helm of the dreamy leap:
