a true classic to have French and Saunders in this episode!

I like how the king doesn't want to marry his daughter either unlike the fairy tale this was based on.

Two issues I always have had with this story, ever since I was small: 1) why does ‘The Law’ have to be enforced? If they don’t marry, then who would object? Surely the church wouldnt officiate an incestuous marriage. 2) at the end, HOW could she wear her dress and have her hair done under the straggletag costume?? 😂

I'm kinda glad in Spanish version, her name was "Natura," and when she was hidding, she was called "ragged"

That prince was a loser. I'm disappointed that, even in the 80s with a different take on Cinderella, they still had the princess and prince be an unfortunate match with the jerk getting rewarded for being a prince despite lacking sense and good judgment. She was good and he was a pompous twit. Haven't we all read The Paper Bag Princess?

I agree. I know it's supposed to be a happy ending because she married into greatness, but when he's an ass it becomes disturbing. Like the king from Rumpelstiltskin, this wasn't as happy as it was meant to be-- to me at least.

You are quite right. These kind of stories... Generally sold to little girls... Are awful and very outdated.

That's why she asked if he still marry her before revealing who she really was. If he had said no even if the shoe fit she would walked away to find herself that one true love. Also he showed her decency as time went by. Not making excuses for him sometimes we miss the little things like when the Prince and Sapsorrow had deep meaning discussion when she was carrying the buckets

The prince is a stuck up jerk. He only loves her for her beauty- even if he was willing to do the honorable thing and marry "Straggletag". What on earth does she see in him?
@Blackblood25411 ай бұрын
@CalebDekkerCharming? Was all the passive aggressive and rude things he said to her supposed to be charming? The only “good” thing he did was keep his word. He’s an ass.
@Blackblood25410 ай бұрын
@CalebDekker ”You don’t stare at princes. It’s not polite at one so low. Or one so ugly” “You don’t disgust me because I don’t think of you.” And he kicks her, throws things at her and tells her to “keep below stairs”. And during their last conversation straight up orders her not to tell anyone that he even spoke to her. If a friend told you a guy she had a crush on told her she was lowely and ugly and said he doesn’t even think about her, and straight up looks disgusted when she hands him something because he thinks she’s dirty I HOPE to god you don’t tell her “he’s just teasing you because he can’t explain why he wants to spend time with you” 😂😂 Please be serious. I’m not misinterpreting anything. He’s a jerk. Also they keep running into each other not by his own accord. In all their meetings she either approches him or he finds her when looking for someone else. He very much WANTS to stay away from her. The fact that she isn’t fit to marry a prince isn’t the problem. The problem is that HE believes that and fully voices it in a very rude manner.

@CalebDekker Had she not ended up being the girl he was dancing with at the ball he would NOT have been happy to marry her. He might have gone with it anyway, but that was out of obligation for her foot fitting in the shoe. It’s already established that royals in this world have to keep their word when they make a decree (hence her father having to marry her even though they both obviously didn’t want to).

@@Blackblood254And where would he learn such behaviours? From his mother and father, perfectly possible...but more likely from the higher staff members who treat lower staff like dirt (I speak from experience). Higher staff are often very protective of their status, developing a haughty attitude towards others. The prince still spoke to Sapsorrow when she was dressed as Straggletag, nonetheless - unthinkable then, and still unthinkable in a few of today's royal houses. When she runs away after each ball, she breaks him just that little bit more. Sorrow can do much to redefine a personality. Have you never seen a person's character completely change after illness, grief over a death, divorce or loss of fortune? I've seen it numerous times, as people begin to look into themselves and finally see the folly in their attitudes, especially that of pride.
@Blackblood2549 ай бұрын
@@Debbie-henri But he never repents for his attitude. He’s just an asshole, is a little less of an asshole because he doesn’t fight having to marry her and then they get married. That’s it. There is no “wow I was actually kind of a douche. I’m sorry for that and I won’t act like that again”. Who’s to say that he won’t continue treating others that way? The story even demonizes the sisters because they have a very nasty attitude. He also has a nasty attitude but for some reason we’re not supposed to view him in the same light as the sisters? That’s bull. It’s one thing if he came to his senses and realizes just how bad he was acting. He never does. And that’s the end of it.

Just went nuts trying to remember this show and specific episode. Google kept showing me the original story. I started to think it was a Mandel effect thing cause no one knew what I was talking about.

Funny... But all these kind of stories tell us is that looks matter not what's within. Beauty is a womans most valuable asset... Is this the story we really want to give our little girls. Really?

I enjoy ALL genres of entertainment except for zombies and strippers! We all have a great choice of content to watch now. Stories are stories for a reason…we all love them and there’s so much twisted stuff out there in OUR WORLD… the moral to most or all of these stories are for everyone to KNOW or LEARN the difference between right and wrong. And like you to share your opinion, but I ask you to give these wonderfully presented Tales and look at how much effort has gone into costume design, the lighting, music and set designs. The script writing is clever, witty and delivered so well by the STORYTELLER! We all LOVE an interesting story. Watch some HORROR Movies if you want to judge anti- social or bad messages!
@Debbie-henri9 ай бұрын
@CalebDekkerI agree entirely. He stood by his word - twice! First, to let Straggletag try on the slipper, and secondly to marry her, no matter her looks at that time. That is a person who considers it an honour and duty to keep to a promise. It was the habit of those days, unlike today, where promises are disregarded by everyone. It was those 2 promises that showed the princess that he was already a man changed by sorrow, and now she can work on turning him into a vegan.
