Sarabande from Bach Cello suite No 5 played by tuba soloist Øystein Baadsvik.

This is a short piece of music that has been intriguing me for decades. This is the first time I played it on a concert tour in the USA and I thought I might as well share it with you.

Mr. Baadsvik, I have some technical tuba questions that I'd really appreciate if you could answer if you have the time. I understand that you are very busy practising and preforming, but if you could answer these questions, it'd be very appreciated. This year I composed my first tuba sonata in C# minor with piano accompaniment, and I think it sounds good, but it seems impractical and begs many play-ability questions. The impractical part is that movement 1 requires an orchestral C tuba, movement 2 requires a tuba in F, and movement 3 requires a Subcontra and an Orchestral C tuba. Is this a problem for a performer, or would most professionals be fine with it? Moreover, the range in II and III bring about the biggest questions, and with the subcontra brings about breathing issues. in II, The range is a B below the bass staff to a C# and octave above middle C! I'm too inexperienced on the Tuba to know whether or not this is impossible or not (note this is the F tuba). For III, I have a Subcontra solo, range E below the bass staff to a C# first octave below human hearing. I assume the range is okay, but it is awfully slow, with whole notes being held at 34BPM. Is this even possible? Can one use circular breathing? And if it doesn't work, do Tuba players have tricks to get around this?
