Do you use multiband compression or dynamic EQ in most mixes or only occasionally? Do you have a favourite?

Sara MB seems like something good to have on a buss to level poky parts right? Another thing I don't understand is why would someone lower the threshold to compress a band but then raise the gain? Isn't the point to control it not make it louder?

I literally typed in this question last night into the search bar and sure enough there was a fresh Sara Carter video ready to watch on the subject for me to enjoy. Great Video Sara! Thank You :)

Thank you so much for this clarification! I use dynamic EQ (fabfilter mostly) so much and am very used to it, but I'm much less comfortable with multiband compression. I've always found it to be simple in what it does but confusing in how to use and master it properly! This video has cleared up a lot of questions I've had regarding multiband in when and how to use it! Thanks so much!

Hey, I’m self taught mix engineer. My understanding has always been dynamic eq is volume ducking and sidechain compression is control. Example: in a mix if I have frequencies clashing I would use static eq to unmask frequencies. If it mix still has some bumps I would then use dynamic eq. I feel as if it’s more natural. I use muti band compressor to control single elements. I almost never use it to sidechain vocals ect. But I’m just a self taught engineer, I don’t know much to be honest. I mix till it sounds good, mixing these pass few years taught me eq, basic compression and volume could take you a long way. Great video. I’m acknowledging everything you’re saying. thanks!!!

I'm relatively new to mixing. The FabFilter plugins are amazing. Love the dynamic eq in ProQ3. It's great for taming trouble frequencies without carving them out completely. Love the ProMB for de-essing. Great video. Thank you for clarifying the difference.

MB-compression if I want to retain transients with not too fast attacktimes, Dynamic EQ is more a resonance-control-thing where I don't want to slap heavy horses like soothe 2 on. "Upward dynamic EQ" sometimes with the sidechannel at 300-3kHz like 0.5db on the Mixbus with the Pro Q3. It's autosetting is sometimes magic for upward dynamic-EQ. Waves C4 is always seen on rythmguitars to control the 250Hz range. It gives some nice "pumping" to the chugs in metal/rock and pulls it a bit inward on those lowmid chugs which gives a nice feel. I tend to use Fabfilter most but at times the Ozone stuff has a nicer feel to it in their autosettings.

I just wanted to be comment 42. Douglas Adams fan.. Multi band compression kinda works for me, but its the first plugin that I'll bypass when I can't get a project sounding "right"

I remember talking about this with an engineer where I said that MB compressors and dynamic EQ are nearly equivalent in function and end result. What makes it nearly equivalent is the way you describe the difference and how they can be used. And it is interesting how that line between two can get thinner and thinner. For instance the Three Body Technology Kirchhoff EQ allows you to control the attack and release times as well as threshold and ratio if you insert a dynamic band … as if it were a compressor. Curious 😁

Hi Sara! Excellent videos! Just a question: Which course do you recommend I do first, the Simply Mixing Rock Masterclass, or the Mixing Essentials Course? Thanks very much.- Best regards.-

Depends really what your goals are. Mixing Essentials for the engineering basics or the rock masterclass for the mixing process.

Holy cow. Do you know how useful that one tiny nugget is about taming kick and snare bleed in the OH's?! I mean, I know it's obvious when you think about it but, jeez, I have a mix where for the first time I have bleed into the OHs and it's been killing me trying to get the drum bus right. Thank you!

for me it's the same shit. and sounds exactly the same. so i prefer using dynamic eq instead of multiband, because multiband compression is heavier on cpu.

Sounds reasonable!
@dodgingrain3695 Жыл бұрын
lol, I don't see much difference between the two. Even the stock cubase dynamic eq has ratio, attack, and release controls. Generally, if I'm using a dynamic eq or multi-band compressor its to control something specific and I don't want color anyway. So effectively the only difference might be a knee control.
@TripleS65 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand the essence of this video but if your mixes are great don't change what you're doing!

The dynamic eq is more like a vocal rider plug in. The volume is adjusted, but you are not otherwise impacting the waveform. Compressors also control the volume, but they do so by adjusting the shape of the waveform above the threshold. That re-shaping adds color that a dynamic eq will not add. Whether the color is good or bad is up to you.
