This brings tears to my eyes everytime, and its 40 years or more since I first heard it. Jimmy's solo is a masterclass in understatement and restrained emotion. It's almost Debussy or Ravel like, an impressionistic mini love tone poem, a life time of sadness compressed into 1 min.

He was such a special pianist. His voicing’s are so hip and bell like. He was great arranger too (I believe he did some arrangements for some of the big bands, especially Duke Ellington). There is an interview with Tommy Flanagan and Loren Schoenberg for WKCR and Tommy mentions him as an influence.

Sweet, plain and good, quietly brilliant, actually high on any scale of virtuosity and quality, this remains as attractive as ever, because of the great qualities of these artists.

To my mind, Jimmy Jones was by far the most romantic, lyrical pianist in jazz history - far more so than the other usual suspects, Ellis Larkins, Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, etc..
