For a few years now I’ve been wanting to be outside more and liked the idea of drawing/painting outside. I seemed to always find an excuse mainly saying “I’m too busy”. This year I’ve decided to work on myself and this road has taken me to so many places I never expected. I’m very excited to fulfill my simple wish, and watching videos like yours really helps me want to push for it. Once it warms up some 😅

Thank you Sarah for sharing this entire series with us. This was such a journey and I had such a wonderful time keeping up with you on these. I even managed to paint for six days in a row during this month as well and that only because you inspired me to do so. They were okay paintings but I am proud of them and that I put in the time. Not 30 days but I’m okay with that too. My favourite of all the paintings you created and I loved them all, was the last tree one. Absolutely loved this one. A lovely recap of your experiences and work. I’m encouraged by your calm view of growing in a skill. I’m curious if you were still painting in the studio on other things during this challenge? Do you think this became a longer lasting habit for you moving forward?
@SarahBurnsStudio2 жыл бұрын
Yes I was working on many paintings in the studio, particularly some coastal scenes. In my most recent studio vlog I showed a bit of it 😊 This is definitely a lasting a habit. I already loved painting outside but sometimes I would let many days go by (or even more than a week) without painting outside. But now I see the real power in doing it often and I plan on continuing!

Absolutely right Sarah! There is no substitute for working from life. Especially if you want to progress your skills quickly and 'find' yourself as an artist. It's something I'm really working on too & have seen a big shift in my work. It's something to always encourage in others. I feel you about the weather! Many a time have I been drawing on beaches in Scotland, either fighting to keep the paper down or if it's not windy, fighting the midges! Or ominous clouds appear on the horizon & you have to run for some shelter to keep your work dry! Mind you, I live in the Lake District, so I have the same issues here too, it's all character building :-). I would like to recommend Sandi Hester on KZbin to anyone for more encouragement on painting from life. She is very honest in what she does with the added bonus of being very funny! Thanks Sarah for a great series of episodes. Also, as a west coast girl, I love seeing the east coast as I'm not very familiar with it. Shirley

I really enjoy watching your art process. It is exactly how I would paint, if I took the trouble to get good at it. A lot of artists make their own versions of what they see, and there is nothing wrong with that, but you paint very realistically paying very careful attention to the colours and values etc. I just love realism. To me that is true art. You are great at making an eye-catching composition too. New subscriber here!

Dear Sarah, You not only painted outside from life everyday for a month, you filmed every day too and took still photos as well. You took us with you, and you had an idea in mind. You may have got to Day 9 and felt, ugh, and yet you persisted, and including when your mouth was numb, you didn't let your feelings, stop your actions. One little circle per day, was the structure. Tied into one sketchbook with them all over just a few pages. Some took longer than others, and others were in the transport portal protection of the car, a second portal layer. I loved the editing going through the portal, zooming in and jumping through to your time there and landing solidly. My QUESTION(s) are these; When did you figure this zooming method "into the portal move on your camera"? Did the 30 days contribute to this new style of filming? You would have got this process down easier by the end of the month too? Was this assisted by the circles you had previously done in plein air a few months ago, or was it the stepping stones of the book, the portals in there, where you had both your work held in front of the scene? Did you see that technique like a film story, motivated by some particular video of someone else's style? At day 1, you couldn't have known what was going to be done on day 2 even. So talk about keeping you focused on "this one particular day, worry free", let alone how you would be and where on day 30 and what it would potentially be about. It became about; what, why and how you would do 30 days of gouache and watercolour...., and thanks for taking us through your time machine..... I felt very safe, jumping through portals with your assistance....with great steady landings! Great steering, and level shots. In kindred spirit, Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! Sydney Australia 5th of May 2022; 4:11pm (PS in the studio now, happy and content, after drawing two rough 2B sketches of the roller machines doing the new road surface out the front of my house, sitting and testing a new lightweight aluminum frame chair with a table, and cup holder. Love it! Showing my work to some people, my picture book so far, and taking photos of all the machinery and witches hats, and explaining "I am only looking for shapes" not to do them particularly, not to be a public nuisance (lol adult with camera) but rather just "for my artistic picture book for children...." As you say, it is brush mileage. Or pencil mileage...I had to sketch fast as the machines moved up and down the street, constantly changing perspective from side view, to back view to distant!....

Ahhh I love these little portals! And I agree so much with developing a workflow that can just get you to paint. My question (if you have time in the next video): you seem to paint outside a lot. What are some "habits" that make your workflow easier now that you did it in short daily intervals for 30 days straight? E.g. cleaning your palette every night or along those lines. The battle prep before heading out to the field!
