Today it's a very special edition of The Pro-Files: I spent a day chatting with recorder maestro Walter van Hauwe! He told me about the reemergence of the recorder in the 1960s, his time with legends such as Frans Brüggen and Fred Morgan, his refreshing take on education, kicking out conservatives, how a new school system changed everything, and why making a mistake is so important!

We called them the 'blokfluitmeisjes' the 'little recorder girls' at the conservatory; 40 or 50 contantly milling about for a few days every month in the hallways....I think in all of Walter's classes through the years there were only about 1 or 2 male students, which the other students in EM often found rather amusing. Walter and Kees are Brüggen's most known pupils of course, through all their writings and recordings, but the funny thing is that Frans actually said many times that he considered Marion Verbruggen his most talented student of all. Hard to imagine now, the period Walter discusses here was amazing- it marked the period wherein fine recorders, harpsichords, lutes, oboes and traversos were being built in larger numbers and there was experimentation and discovery everywhere taking place.

Thank you SO much for this gift! How fantastic it is to hear Mr. van Hauwe, in his own words, describe the modern development of the recorder - the instruments, technique, and the teaching. He is truly one of the recorder greats - and a gifted story teller, putting it all in clear perspective. I've admired him for years, and I'm so grateful for his amazing contributions to the modern renaissance of the recorder and its repertoire...as I am for YOUR contributions, Sarah. Your extensive library of video recorder lessons, tips, and interviews is a superb legacy. Thank you! 👑

What a treat - thankyou so much for this interview. It makes me realise how much we take for granted today: the availability of good instruments, in a range of tunings and styles, at reasonable prices and so many amazing, professional players throughout the world to delight us - we have Walter and his cohorts to thanks for this!! Like Walter I also began playing at school at the age of 7/8 years (a lunchtime recorder group if I remember correctly) - but - unlike Walter I instantly loved the recorder. For me, it was the fact that, with a book and a cheap plastic soprano, I could go away on my own and teach myself - I could make music!! This immediacy, the way anyone can pick it up and play a simple tune within minutes, is part of the recorder's charm - unfortunately it might also be the reason so many of us play badly!! Unlike many other instruments, where the initial learning curve is steep and painful (guitar, any reed instrument, violin) the initial learning curve for recorder is very shallow - the real work required to become an exceptional player - lies further down the path and is a path happily ignored by many of us - lol!! I think this discrepancy in 'where' the difficulties lie is also the reason so many non recorder players assume it is an easy instrument to master.

WOW! Sarah, you knocked that one so far out of the park it's in orbit! What a delightful and informative interview. Walter von Hauwe! Unreal. Enjoyed every minute of it, and was sorry to see it end. Could have taken 3 or 4 hours of that. What a wonderful interview. And nice to put a personality to his playing and his writing - very pleasant (and intelligent) fellow.

Brilliant. So interesting. I remember Quadro Hotteterre at the Wigmore Hall, probably in the 80's. It was stunning and got me hooked. I went on to study and finished at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, a great experience. Walter, I fondly remember a recording of Telemann trio sonatas with oboe (Han De Vries). I wore out my cassette tape! Any plans to make this available digitally? It is the most beautifully balanced and produced recording. Thank you for this inspiring interview.

yeah ... what to say ... it's not just because I'm Dutch that I'm pretty straight forward but as a responsabile teacher I have to convince students that if you really want to become a professional and skilled musician it's not all party. Clearly structured and efficient practice is inevitable and you need to learn these skills during your studies so that you can educate yourself for the other 40 years after your studies. This can be heavy, even frustrating at times. It is essential, especially for an artist, that you get the feel that the process of development is more interesting than the end result; that result, this eventually nice, pleasant however always short moment, is for your audience. But the process is yours and it is there where you develop your unique, personal artistic inspiration and maintain your motivation. And this is what you should be taught during your studies. And that’s why I, as a teacher, have to be clear, convincing and inspiring; and so now and then, here or there even a bit tough. All this, of course, preferably on the basis of a shared addiction for our beloved instrument. Which music you want to play next is of less importance. Play recorder first, then choose the music; not the other way around. More or less in this order: 🥴😳😬🤯🤪😓😊😎🍺

@myWaltervanHauwe
@myWaltervanHauwe 3 жыл бұрын
Why Sour Cream? Can't remember exactly. Clear was that we wanted to stay as far away as possible from something like “The Amsterdam Recorder Trio”. We listened lots of pop music these days (1970), so choosing such a confusing name was pretty hot. Later someone suggested that "Sour" is the opposite of the recorder’s historical name: "Flauto Dolce" or "Flûte Doux", and that we wanted to get rid of that one-sided image; might be; anyway, this did not came from us. Or maybe it was just that during a rehearsal the coffee cream was sour ...?!?

“He told me about the reemergence of the recorder in the 1960s…” 👍 It’s nice to hear that the recorder maestro Walter van Hauwe agrees with yours truly. Be that as it may, this shouldn’t come as a revelation to Sarah’s subscribers since I did say in a prior post that there was a renaissance with the recorder in the 1960's. 👌 😉
