When I was around eleven right up to the age of 14 I LOVED the recorder so much and I played it every day, it felt like an extension of myself. Playing it made me feel happy and then when I was in grade 7 my music teacher said it wasn't a real instrument and he didn't think me being able to play it well was anything worth being proud of. I was heartbroken. In went from playing it every day to barely playing it at all and feeling embarrassed about the fact that I even played it. I play the flute now, but I still really love the recorder, so it makes me so happy to watch videos like this. Go team recorder!

Boo on your grade 7 music teacher!! Great that you play the flute, but you can always come home to the recorder. Bart Spanhove (Flanders Recorder Quartet) said that recorder is rarely taught in public school (especially the U.S.) by recorder specialists, but by those who expect to have the children move on to what the teachers consider "real" instruments for band and such. Also, in typical U.S. universities, there are few (if any) specialized recorder programs. A person who wants to become an accomplished recorder player has to seek out music schools that have early music programs.

The slow introduction to Led Zeplin’s Stairway to Heaven included recorders, before the entry of the electronic instruments. They sound real enough to me. @@ElephantBill That's my point, though. I chalk it up to ignorance. People are so biased and think of the recorder as that elementary school instrument that can never actually sound good, so when they hear them like in Stairway to Heaven, they assume they're just hearing some kind of flute instead.

Not necessarily. The true Renaissance recorders use different fingerings than the recorders seen most, which require Baroque fingerings. Also different models may have different needs for playing in tune with others.

I think the misunderstanding of how difficult - or, rather, how easy - the instrument is to play arises from the ease of getting a sound out of it at the start - blow and something happens that is recognisable. However, to play it in a melodic and tuneful way requires hours of hard work. This is compounded by learners equating playing fast with good playing. The real difficulty is to play slowly and in tune. Thank you for this video, Sarah. I suspect it may be quite a revelation to a lot of people. I enjoyed the start of "Daphne" which is one of the pieces I will be showing off during the Making Music day on the 21st of June in Central Library, Edinburgh.

Sarah, I have to tell you that because of you I bought my recorder last week. I used to "play" the recorder in primary school, if you count one song played by 30 kids at the same time that had no idea what to do. I've been binge watching your videos for days now and I decided to give it a try. I had no idea that someone can do so much with such a simple instrument. Thank you so much for an inspiration, I love to practice so far, though I'm sure my neighbours will hate it until I start sounding like playing actual music. Thank you again!

It is very accessible. I learned to play the soprano recorder as a child, and managed to proceed easily with an instructor. As an adult, I am learning the piano, but lately, every now and then I take out my newly-bought alto recorder if I need to relax a bit. Learning the piano, even on a solid beginner level requires a lot of effort; you can make your initial strides for the recorder way easier, and was very viable to get back to it after ~30 years. You can buy it in decent quality relatively cheaply, it is a low-maintenance and easy-to-carry instrument.

Bought a Yamaha YRA-402b Alto recorder because of Sarah. I always wanted some "underdog" instrument, some instrument that nobody expects to be so good, I thought getting some exotic ones could do the thing but the recorder was there all along. After a bunch of concertos showing the beautiful sounds the recorder can do, I started to learn on the spot. Another reason I wanted so bad to start it is because the Recorder _is the prime example of something that's easy to play but hard to master_ . Anyone can take a recorder and make sounds and play basic music, but it takes practice in getting to sound like Vivaldi's concertos or even learn some weird techniques like Circular Breathing. Now I am doing exercises with a Yamaha method book for Alto recorders, and I hope to be a better player soon. But only time and practice will tell

11. When a wind player can or prefers not to maintain their embouchure, the recorder is a natural transition to keep playing music with friends, recorder societies, ensembles or in recorder orchestras. Many of the excellent recorder players I have met formerly played the flute, oboe, clarinet or a brass instrument. No more reeds!

👏👍 Reason #11 why the recorder is amazing - It's also a passport to music appreciation and other wind instruments. I, for one, went on to the Bb clarinet, alto saxophone, fife flute, concert flute, pan flute and tin whistle among the treble clef wind instruments. Notice I didn't say 'advanced' to other wind instruments. As Sarah has said, “The recorder is played at a high standard by thousands of people all over the world to just a high level as any other instrument.” 😉 🎼 ♫

The biggest reason I like the recorder is that it is cheap. When I was a child, I really wanted to learn music, however, my parents didn't want to pay for instruments and lessons. They didn't want to spend the money required for me to learn to play properly. Every Christmas I asked for a trumpet but never got one. That changed in secondary school since the school required us to buy recorders. My parents got me a second-hand plastic recorder and that became my first instrument. Within a few months of learning the recorder, I advanced on to the tuba and the electric organ (learning by using my school's instruments during lunch break). Eventually, I bought a cheap second-hand guitar with my pocket money and taught myself to play that too. Fast forward 30 years, and I now play the guitar, piano, ukulele, and harmonica. My daughter's school, last year, started teaching the students the recorder and we had to buy one for my daughter. I insisted that we bought two recorders - one for my daughter and one for me. So I still play the recorder almost every day. The recorder is often denounced because most people experience it as a cheap plastic toy. However, it is precisely because it can be cheaply made out of plastic that it is so wonderful. Any parent that can afford to buy a recorded and open up musical potential for their child.

Unfortunately now I don't have much time for practice or just playing for fun, but I really enjoyed 10 years I could learn how to play it... and I got weird looks almost everytime when I explained, that staying with recorder and not switching to flute or some other "better" musical instrument was really my choice :D So, time to grab my alto and try if after all these years I can still play some pieces which I used to play on competitions :)

Such a beautiful instrument. I am guitar player, but I've been obsessed with recorders since 2018. I currently own three plastic Yamaha recoders (soprano, alto and tenor) and I must say is a very fascinating instrument (a very tricky one as well). From a guitarist perspective, one of the most challenging things about recorders (and woodwind instruments in general) is the breathing and articulation technique. You must be more aware about breathing than ever. Obviously you are always breathing, no matter what instrument you play, but with the recorders and woodwinds, breathing is the essence of the instrument and your sound. About my level, I can play some simple melodies, some scales and arpeggios (two first octaves for the time being) in soprano and alto recorders. Finger stretching in the tenor recorder is pretty hard to me. My main study source is the Sweet Pipes series. Excellent video and channel as usual. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia. P.S: Have you ever tried an instrument called "friscaletto" or "friscalettu"?. It's a flute from Southern Italy very common in traditional folk repertoire (eg, tarantella). You should give it a try.

Great video Sarah- I am a big fan of your channel! I get very tired of my family teasing me about playing the recorder. I think the problem is that most people’s experience of the recorder is from whole class lessons in primary school played on nasty cheap plastic things almost always taught by a well meaning class teacher who can’t bloody well play it( beyond Frere Jacque or Hot Cross Buns...) I was watching a video of some children playing on a school blog last week and 12 out of the 14 children on the video had their right hand at the top! This was a lesson from a so called music teacher! Ahhhgggghhhhh!!!!!!!!! Like most people I started to learn the recorder in primary school. I got to about ten and the music teacher at my primary school called my parents in and said” Now it’s time for her to learn a proper instrument- here’s a clarinet.” So I started down that path, went to grade VIII and then studied music at university but the recorder was always my first love and I played it ( usually in secret when no one was in) whenever I could. I actually really resent that no one suggested me actually learning the recorder properly as I feel I could have been really good whereas my clarinet playing was really average probably because I didn’t like it much. I trained as a primary school teacher and ended up as a music co-ordinator in a junior school. I promoted the recorder as much as I could. Teachers at local music festivals used to ask me what my secret was in managing to get my young players to make such a lovely sound en-masse ( when theirs sounded like a bag of strangled cats!) no secret- simple fact is I can play it! Would you expect a beginner violinist to teach a bunch of 7 year olds? I don’t think so! Such a sad indictment of music education in the UK that children do not have high quality music tuition( unless parents can pay for it.) I came back to playing the recorder more myself in the last few years ( At the ripe old age of 51) and I joined my local SRP. Your videos have been invaluable in helping to improve my technique! I now have a growing collection of recorders which I play on a daily basis- just love it! Thankyou❤️

I’m enjoying learning the recorder. It took me by surprise. I’ve been doing a lot of drawing but in the last few years, drawing has started to be hard for my eyes. I found some recorders in my house left over from goodness knows when, so I tried them. Wow! What a cheerful sound! The soprano recorder is a perfect size for my aging hands (I’m definitely one of your older viewers) and reading music is not as hard on my eyes as drawing. I also found out that as the years have gone by, my breathing has become more shallow. Recorder playing is helping me breathe better! So for the senior aged recorder student I’m getting happiness, a social experience (I’m planning to join group recorder lessons in my town), and deeper breathing, as well as mental stimulation. So many amazing benefits.

I love my recorders, classical, baroque, rock, whatever, I taught myself Steve Vais "For The Love of God" the lead guitar part, for something unusual, love how I can bend the notes up and down, imitating his use of the tremolo bar (which really is meant for vibrato, always found that weird!) or plain bends, or where he creates weird special effects by hitting the bar to create a fluttering effect, I can't play it on guitar (even though it's my main instrument) but on recorder it sounds so good!

The recorder unit in school encouraged my kid to start clarinet "early" (for here), and he's already joining orchestras because he can't wait for school band and he's afraid of being bored (in school band). Also, his friends see my tenor recorder and get so excited that very few around here think of the recorder as anything less than a "real" instrument.

Problem is people like to have an opinion even if they haven't looked in depth into the matter: they remember the recorder as the plastic monstruosity producing piercing nightmares in the hands of a child attending a music education class and they remember that because they haven't looked any further. Plus, at a very basic level, the recorder is possibly the cheapest instrument of them all: you can buy a plastic toy for 5 EUR or even less and this probably reinforces the idea of it not being a real istrument. And when you said "just because you learnt something as a child doesn't mean it's childish" triggered my heartfelt applause.

I think there are lot of misconceptions and prejudices around the practice of music in general, and deffinetly the recorder is one of the most underrated instrument; I played soprano recorder as a child, now I play guitar, but since I've come across this channel, my interest in recorder is back, because Sarah demonstrates what really you can achieve with this beautifull instrument, so I bought an Alto recorder, and start practicing, and I just want to thank you for open this new world for me, congratulations for your greats videos, and cheers from México.

2:10 STOP IT STOP IT :'D 5:16 IT HURTS (i always have to laugh at that interaction because it tickles my brain and distracts me from playing) btw more reasons are: -you can get into playing decent quality for cheap (thomann flutes are what i use and for starters/occasional players they are fantastic) -it makes learning note-reading simpler (just by the amount of holes you can't really mess up what hole is what) -it's super easy to hide away due to it's size (the "adult" instruments like guitars and pianos are kinda... bulky) -the possibilities for pleasurable music are huge (and same goes with the possibilities to annoy the heck out of someone)

One of my favourite things about the recorder -- which is related to your point about its superficial simplicity -- is that recorders have ZERO moving parts (at least the smaller models). Modern woodwind instruments are covered in mechanical bits. During the early 1700s, the flute, oboe, and clarinet were mechanically simpler than they are today, with only a few keys. Over the centuries, these woodwinds gained keys in response to changing musical sensibilities, bigger concert halls, or whatever. As an amateur recorder player, it's fun for me to explore the outer limits of an instrument that manages to be versatile without reliance on mechanical contrivances. Despite the lack of moving parts, the recorder has a range of two octaves and a sixth (plus or minus one or two notes). (However, I would be very tempted to try a modern recorder festooned with keys, like the Eagle or the Helder. )

This is actually the reason why I like the recorder and other simple-design instruments (I am learning recorder and dizi now; I also like Irish flute, duduk, xiao). I like when the instruments have only real holes, and when you really have full control over it, without any complex mechanisms.

To people who think the recorder is an "easy" instrument, I would say that rather it is an approachable instrument, especially for kids. It's size, low back pressure and lack of intimidating key work do make it very easy to start playing. But to get good at it takes just as much work as any instrument. (And the lack of keys actually makes a lot of things harder. We added keys to flutes and clarinets specifically to make certain things easier.)

A great point you make about the recorder being referred to as a child’s instrument. So English, Maths and Science are childish subjects because they started learning them at 4 years old. 😀😀😀😀😀 Most learning of instruments start when we”re children - so all instruments are childish. 😀😀😀😀

I'd add that the idea of a recorder being a child's instrument is because many people's only experience is with very cheap, poorly made recorders which produce bad sound.

I'll be honest, the name's probably its worst enemy (besides everybody's 4th grade experience). In English it doesn't sound like an instrument's name, or at least not a cool one. Some other languages actually call it flute (well, at type of flute), and I guess that helps with its reputation, even after the horrors of childhood "music" lessons. Great job introducing us to some of its coolest features. Thank you!

I find something especially good about the recorder: you cannot bite a reed to get the high register or to modify the pitch of any note. There's no option: YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR AIR. I'm a professional bassoonist and I deal every day with the tendency of biting. However, after a few days playing my recorders seriously, I played the bassoon again and I noticed that I controlled EVERYTHING much better: breathing, articulation, tuning, high register, airflow in general, playing with decision... Professional recorder player or not, I think that the recorder is a therapeutic instrument for any wind player!

Regarding repertoire there is a series of concerti by Haydn for lira organizzata, an instrument similar to the hurdy-gurdy. The first time I heard any of these was #1 and on the recording I had , it was played on two recorders (although I didn't realize till many years later that there were two and not just one). After much memorizing the melody and even more practicing, I managed to learn the solo part(s) by ear. However, as i mentioned, I didn't realize until many years later when I heard a flute and oboe version that I realized there were actually TWO soloists and the "part" I learned was a mix of the the two. Talk about fun! Anyway, I actually found a score of the concerto at my university music school library so (don't tell anyone) I checked it out and made a copy of it for myself, and learned the parts separately, ;). It's funny; if I'd seen the score first, I'd have been terrified to even try to learn it because of how complicated it looked!

For #9, juggling was like that too. Juggling in olden times was a noble art, for kings and grand warriors. This goes as far back (at least) as Ancient Greece. There is a tombstone from ancient Greece upon which is written "I am the first man to juggle glass balls." Now it's mocked as a circus act, it makes me sad.

My reasons Number 1: I can play metallica for €10 Only ond note at a time...as a pianist this is so great You can literally just pick it up. Sometimes I just practice fingerings whilst watching something or studying. With piano you have to think right practice time and go and sit at the piano Travelling. My piano is being played by my cousins and I have had to borrow keyboards or just not play the last 6 years that I have been in europe, re buying, renting borrowing every time I move. This I I can put in my backpack.

Reason #12 - Alto recorder, particularly Bressan's model, is the most suitable woodwind instrument for playing French baroque music. I love it. I have a Bressan one and it has a very deep and warm low register, incredibly strong, velveted and sonorous low notes. There are great French baroque composers whose composed (or wrote about) for recorder. The chief French baroque historical recorder method writers are, in chronological order. Jean-Pierre Freillon-Poncein, Etiènne Loulié and Jacques-Martin Hotteterre. All these three authors wrote important historical recorder methods covering important issues about perfomance of French baroque music for recorder. Freillon-Poncein's method (Paris, 1700) includes pieces of music such the beautiful "Passacaille a Deux Parties Pour La Flute" (Passacaglia in Two Parts for the Recorder, including a bass, which I am playing this piece and I guarantee: it is a great French piece of music writen for alto recorder). He also wrote a collection of "préludes" for alto recorder in major and minor modes (my prefer is the G mInor one). Etiénne Loulié wrote, in the beginning of the 18th C., a recorder tutor intended for recorder teachers at the time (incredible writing about recorder teaching and playing which I highly recommend its reading). Finally, we have Jacques-Martin Hotteterre and his also important tutor for baroque flute, recorder and oboe. Please, forgive my English: I am not a native speaker.
