Hi Sarah, I love your videos as they are so instructive and lots of fun. I learned the recorder at school and I have taken up recorder again after and absenccccce of 70 years. Having been a flute player in between, I took to the tenor and love playing it. I stumbled on some pieces by James Hook for Tenor and Bass Guitar. How about giving all the other neglected tenor recorder players y intruducing them to some really fun playing . Keep up the good work. Mike Ringham

I was surprised you mentioned articulations only at the end of the video and so briefly, because I kept noticing how wonderful your articulations were throughout! So varied and playful, and they fit the piece so naturally. I played this on the Baroque flute about a decade ago. I really love this piece. Also, when I was a child and into my teens, my flute teacher often used that same metaphor with the duck! I don't think I've heard it since then. Until now, that is!

Thank you a lot for your video! This is my absolute favourite fantasia! To me, it's the story of two people falling in love: It starts with the guy (cause it's the lower version of the theme) getting mesmerized, continues at bar 3 with him approaching her, causing visible confusion at bar 5, him continuing to go for her at bar 6, causing less confusion at bar 7, and from bar 8 on our dialogue is developping. At bar 10 it gets more tender, at bar 12 they find their proper tempo, and now it gets faster, as they become more and more excited, until at bar 15 it seems like the girl remembers that she should actually carry on, or maybe the guy wants to see her again and she isn't sure what's the right thing to answer. Anyway, she gets in the defensive. At bar 18, we have an introspection again, but now from the girl's point of view. Compared to the first largo movement it seems a bit more coyly, but not any less obviously like falling in love. At bar 22 they continue to flirt, so we have a reprise of our melodies. At bar 26 they are unisono and definitely a couple in their hearts,! At bar 29 they need to depart from each other, at bar 31 it's the dramatic climax where their hearts are shouting "No, don't leave!", but bar 32 does leave us merciless alone in a void.... In the Allegro it's him being alone and gettig completely crazy. Although he tries desperately to get his brain together at bar 14, he fails at bar 17, and realises he's lost to love at bar 20. At bar 23, we have the same story for the girl. She remembers at bar 26 how lively he approached her, she backed off first, but then they found their tempo. She continues with getting crazy at bar 31, and reflecting her feelings at bar 35. She as well realises she's lost from 38 on. I remember that I was trying to work this fantasia out when it happened to me that I fell in love myself, and from one day to the other my perspective on this piece changed completely! I had always struggeled with those long notes at bar 14 and 35, because they made no sense to me, but then it became all clear. By the way, I feel like I should add that I'm a heterosexual male myself, so if you feel different about the depicted role models, just do something else! After all, music is something absolutely subjective and very personal, so while I couldn't approach it any differently, it might well be that you can't approach it the same way - so just do your own! I hope this long text was interesting to some, and I wish you all fun and joy!

Awesome tutorial - thanks. I've been watching Claire Grellier's set of tutorials on the Rose Etudes for Clarinet. A set of 12 tutorials covering each of the Teleman Fantasies would be a significant contribution to the genre. It would also allow you to show how you can 're-use' your decisions in interpretation from one Fantasy to the next, thus achieving a unified set of performances. There'd be a doctoral thesis in this, so no pressure. 😏

Wow, this is great! I have been watching many of your previous vlogs and you have already got me excited about the Telemann Fantasias. I saw your general introduction a couple of weeks ago. Can I tell you, I first found you through your comprehensive and amusing response to those cheeky Two Set Violin guys, and became a fan. I learn so much about music in general every time I tune in, and I appreciate your blend of lively intelligence, positivity and genuine relish in explaining all the details, especially the geeky stuff. You have inspired me. I do have a 2nd-hand plastic recorder I picked up cheaply just for a kind of alternate pitch reference and melody realisation tool (I do not have a piano handy, but do play with ukes - my first small step back into music since being a youngster), but I now actually have on order a quena - an Andean flute - being sent to me from Bolivia. They are also found in Peru, Argentina, Chile and Ecuador. Do you know it? It's end blown, but with an open labia, requiring a flute-style embouchure. Usually made from bamboo (but mine coming is jacaranda) they sound wonderful, and I marvel at their impressive range and tone. So much from something so elegantly simple. Some examples: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4HUiHmZdr6FmZo kzbin.info/www/bejne/earMeYOtf8lgaK8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGrWe6qGoc50bNU Of course the 6+1 hole instrument is formally diatonic, but good players seem to have no problem getting the flats & sharps they need. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fX_XqIJoZpV7e7s, kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3vLpWlra7uoj5I) There are variations one can build into them to formally allow chromatic play, although that seems to remains somewhat experimental (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKDPhKd-p5lml6c) On that theme, I have come across a Ukrainian guy who has created a variation of the traditional Ukrainian sopilka, a fipple flute very similar to recorder, that has an open labia like the quena. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZWpoaCHfN9rjsk) There is an 8 tone/2 register hole configuration for modern sopilka (10 holes in all + end) which allows fully chromatic play, and he has made this work with the quena mouthpiece. That interests me enormously. I am inspired by what you share in Team Recorder, but I confess to wanting to try to engage more in the production of the raw sound and tone, so the simplicity and spectacular sound of the quena has currently caught my imagination. If you have any thoughts on these things, I would love to hear them. One day I intend to learn to play the Fantasias, or some of them, on one of these instruments. One day.

What I find really cool is that someone could make an almost identical video about the Bach cello suites. The way you get different articulations and dynamics is very different, of course, but Bach used a lot of the same polyphony-in-one-voice techniques.

Hi Sarah what mic or recording devices do you use? I have a little piano channel and I also want to post some beginner recorder videos but my laptop has stopped recording properly. For the first 2 months I just used videopad as I had 0 budget for equipment and it worked fine then one day my recording came out all staccato and I have no idea what is going on. When I ask people or the internet for a fix everyone talks about midi cables but that doesn't really help me if I want to play acoustic instruments like upright/grand pianos or the recorder. So it would be good to know what you use or at least to hear some alternatives. I could go out and buy expensive microphones or recording devices but it is a shame to spend money when I was doing it all fine for free. Thanks a lot.

I simply use an H2n for recording for my own piano channel (acoustic piano), and it works with great success!! I spent a few weeks getting the mic positioning down, but that is it. Nothing further needed. (KZbin messes with audio anyway, so I don't worry TOO much about it.)

Pre-Question: I like your style of video and Iv'e learned a lot about the recorder. Not only that, but about woodwind in general too. The question: Would you make a video about what it's like to play with other instruments from the recorder point of view? Especially with a pan flute because I know you did play with some. I am a pan flute player and in my country there is not body to ask that question as the pan pipe is non-existent.. (Canada) Thanks! Keep up the good work!

Which Telemann Fantasy should you next cover? My vote is for Number 12. Number 12 doesn't seem to get as much "airplay" as the other Fantasias. It's challenging to play on a recorder (five flats!!). And it's brilliant. (And my favourite!) I've wondered whether its final movement was inspired by the "rustic" music Telemann described in his autobiography, the tunes he heard when he visited Poland when he was young that profoundly influenced his musical imagination. Whatever, I think the boisterous last movement of Number 12 is a fitting finale to the set of twelve. I would enjoy hearing your take on it!

I just started practising Fantasia 10 cause rhythm-wise I think it's simple and boi o boi those jumps are hard. I was wondering which other Fantasia would catch my fan(ta)cy. I think I like the Largo of No. 3. very much. I think I've heard a version somewhere where that third long note (that you modulate with a vibrato) is modulated with a flattement but with a weird shape to it rather than just up and down. It made it more mysterious and creepy. I think, can't remember where whom how. But all these points are really useful even for No. 10 and I'll try and keep in mind when practising.

Songs that I don't know, and I only have the notes of, are difficult!
@ankavoskuilen17254 жыл бұрын
@jjf62574 жыл бұрын
The easiest way is to find the music from the internet. I use KZbin, Spotify and Naxos Music Library (for classical & jazz). The another way is to use metronome (download a phone app if you don't have a physical metronome) or count in your head. The second option takes more time because in the beginning you don't know what it should sound. But it is possible. You can split the piece in phrases, like Sarah has done in some of her tutorial videos. It helps you to understand what the piece is about. You know, the counting isn't everything because you are phrasing while you play and every 1/8 note is not equal when you represent the piece. That's where it helps if you split it in phrases and think the music more like phrases than individual notes or whole piece together.
