This might sound strange, but we have an old oven in the barn that we used the self-cleaning cycle on for parts like that. Just throw the part in the oven and let it bake for a few hours. Then, you just pressure wash the flakes off of it. Makes it nice and clean without chemicals.

I'm enjoying watching your restoration of this truck. I owned a 2002 Ranger extended cab 4.0 SOHC V6/automatic/3.55 limited-slip extended cab and it was a great truck. I wish I still had it, except for its random "door ajar" message due to issues with the rear half-door sensor switches in the cold. Otherwise, it was a fabulous truck that could tow and got reasonable fuel economy with plenty of power.

You could try the 4" Rust and Paint Stripper Wheel for Rust removal made by 3M, they offer different grits and is less aggressive than a wire wheel. If that still doesn't get the job done I would switch to a brass wire wheel, those bristles are softer than the steel. Another option is a Roloc bristle disc that comes in a few different grits.

Sarah, bravo on soda blast. Use it on those Power steering brackets where you cant reach into the deep voids. Don't forget Zinc Chromate primer on Aluminum, nothing else sticks. Also try the cup shaped wire wheels. The disk ones work great but they don't fit in small crevasses. I also did a lot of cleanup with very small dreminal wire wheels, used on a standard drill, they fit in tiny places and get to those hard to reach areas. Hey one follow up, if you end up using Zinc Chromate primer, wear a mask, wear a mask, wear a mask, that shit is not eco friendly.
