The twin's backstory always makes me feel bad for Kageyama. All three prodigy setters of Haikyuu went through a similar issue. They were highly skilled and highly competitive which caused them to have trouble with their teammates. But, Kageyama was the only one that didn't have anyone to help him at that moment. Oikawa had Iwaizumi, Atsumu had Osamu, and that's why neither went through what Kageyama did. When Kageyama became a "tyrant" everyone turned their backs on him.

I kinda disagree. Atsumu was close to being a "tyrant" but the thing that we shouldn't ignore (like some people do) is that his tosses were really good and easy to hit... while it was clear as day that Kageyama's old teammates had a problem with his tosses and that he wasn't helping them get the ball over which is why they turned their back on him. And I'd argue that it was justified.
@Iqnacio.
@Iqnacio. Жыл бұрын
@@cookiemonster6468 I do think you are right in that Kageyamas attitude towards his hitters made him different from Atsumu and distanced him from his teammates even more. In other words, even though both are demanding, what made Kageyama a "tyrant" in his team and Atsumu just "a bit scary" in his is that Atsumu has always also been a "considerate" setter, meanwhile Kageyama used to impose his will over his hitters. Having said that, I think it could be argued that Kageyama was like that _because_ he didn't have a teammate and friend (or brother) that dared to stand head to head against him and challenge him on those decisions until Hinata, he had no one that could fight him and basically put him in his place when he went too far like Iwaisumi did for Oikawa and Osamu did for Atsumu, and since no one challenged him, he just went further and further into that tyrant attitude. I think this is why his lesson after the all-Japan youth camp was how to argue with his teammates and for everyone but Hinata on Karasuno to argue back at him and thus having "healthy fights", cause Kageyama had to learn how to ask more from his teammates without imposing his will, and Karasuno had to learn to not just tag along his decisions but challenge him too.

I feel like the twins relationship is one of the most realistic depictions of a sibling relationship. They compete and argue and bully each other but at the same time they can come together afterwards and spend time hanging out together playing video games.

@SarahPavanVolleyball I've always loved this episode. I'm an identical twin. The backstory for how the twins got better and better and more competitive with each other & that's HOW they continued to get better simply because they wanted to compete with their twin.. it really struck a chord with me. It's exactly how my brother and I were.. and almost every sport we played we were known for how competitive we were and our skill - especially when we locked in. We were "the twins". For soccer, we were always paired opposite each other either as forwards, middies or defense (one was always left and one was always right) and we would just lock in the same groove. I absolutely loved the part when they were fighting on the volleyball court and someone said "oh it's the twins fighting again, a volleyball classic". That's more or less what would happen with my brother and I as well. Though I was a setter and he was a libero. It's funny, he left to join the military at 21 and it felt like I lost a part of myself - my competitiveness disappeared. I can assure you that they love each other - it's just how twins are. I'm still waiting for him to catch up on haikyuu so I can finally see what he thinks about this episode!

The most important line in the series is when Osamu says that Atsumu loves volleyball a smidge more than him. This is what Furudate is telling his readers about what creates a genius. He is showing that it’s not about being born a certain way, like in the Oikawa arc, because they are twins and genetically the same. Something else is pushing Atsumu to the top, and the answer is his LOVE of volleyball, which is the uniting force behind it all.

I was surprised and sad after S2 because of the message of "a genius won, a hard worker lost", despite the Oikawa's will to continue polishing himself for life. I'm glad I watched s4 later on. Tho it's true natural geniuses exists, passion/love gets you there too at a certain point. Tho it's realistic to call that passion "crazy" too, since you do need that level to close the gap one on one - that's also implied with the twins in my interpretation. Kenma also brings back genetics, but it ties up with white haired dude's saying there are different ways to win in volleyball
@iamai_iggs

@@T7Karou except oikawa completely rejected the premise of "genius" at the end of s2 with his statement: "talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish". this is the author telling us that the genius and the hardworker are one and the same. oikawa, before the end of s2, was held back by his own belief that there is a distinction between geniuses and normal people, and that he has a limitation that prevents from catching up with the geniuses. but once he broke free of that belief, let's not kid ourself, oikawa IS a genius.

Never fails to make me emotional that the chapter with Aran and Miya twins' backstory is called "Love" in the original :") And I love how some of the little bits, like Atsumu being somewhat isolated due to his attitude, help see the difference between him and Kageyama despite both being fairly demanding and intense - like Aran said, it's exhausting when everyone hates you, but Atsumu had this "blessing" in Osamu, which gave him the luxury of not caring about what anyone else thought. And Osamu made sure to include him in his own (often violent lol) way, like when he spiked into his head when Atsumu was sitting away from everyone all by himself. Kageyama, while having a similar approach, didn't have that same luxury, so it took a much bigger toll on him. 31:09 - Ukai is actually talking about a bump set, but the subs didn't catch it!

Wow couldn't have explained it any better. And to add to what you've already said, their violence can come off as them not getting along with each other to some people, but it's actually the opposite. It's more the case with brothers, but certain siblings who are embarrassed to openly show affection towards their other siblings, go about it in very strange ways. In this case, as is the same with a lot of siblings I've talked to irl, "violence" and just general rowdiness is a subtle way to tell each other that "hey, no matter what arguments we go through, or fights we get ourselves into, we're still family". And I feel like it's a nice way of expression, too, since it allows siblings like this to openly voice their frustrations with one another and deal with it right then and there without having to bottle it up in fear of starting a rift between each other. If you're already beating each other up and making up at the end of the day, then no issue, no matter how big, can tear you apart imo.

Also subverting expectations, they could have easily gave him a Yamaguchi moment but instead they built up a moment through their practice together and gave it an amazing pay off. In the manga it also emphasizes more the fact that Nishinoya had a tendency to take a step back to receive and for a floater he needs to step forward instead.

For Kinoshita and Noya moment, it's more impact on me when I read manga, due to the title of this chapter in manga. Normally, the title of the chapter will show at first, no matter in manga or anime. Just like what Sarah always sees, the title of that episode usually comes out after the opening song, right? But come to Kinoshita and Noya moment, the chapter doesn't show the title at first. Only when the moment comes, when Noya takes up the ball successfully by overhand, then they shout together (although in manga they don't really shout out) Then only the title of this chapter appears: "Hero of the Guardian Deity". Kinoshita says: "I thought I could be a hero... I guess I was wrong." Then at the end of this chapter, the title shows: "Hero of the Guardian Deity". It's much impact on me and makes me cry and proud of Kinoshita. Maybe at this time, Kinoshita can't be a hero on himself, but he's totally the HERO of Noya. Noya's overhand pass is not a miracle, it's a result of the practice between Kinoshita and Noya over a long time. Because Kinoshita helped him practice more, because Kinoshita called him to move up, so Noya gets up the ball. Kinoshita may not be a hero on himself, but he's the HERO of the Guardian Deity.

What I love about Haikyuu is that the series really showed us different types of players. In the case of Kinoshita, his character showed us that a player can be impactful on the team even if he or she isn't in on the court. The simple act of helping your teammates be better by practicing with them and pushing them to be better, you're making the team better.

One reason I love Haikyuu is that it has these moments where it focuses on characters who aren't the 'winners' or the best at something. Its similar to Season 1, Episode 16 where it focused on how for all the winning teams there are dozens of losing teams. Kinoshita and Noya's moment really shows how all of the effort you put in, even if its not on the court, makes you essential to the team. Its kind of like what Kita was saying last episode tbh haha And yeah, the twins love each other. As others have mentioned, its just siblings fights, plus Japanese being hyperbolic some of the words they used would be crazy harsh in English but in Japanese its not quite as bad (e.g. calling someone trash lol). But you can see that Osamu was the more empathetic twin and always looked out for Atsumu, but Atsumu was the more passionate. These last few episodes of season 4 are pretty much all amazing, so glad you enjoyed this one! And you'll probably love the other episodes about the same amount haha

I can't state this often enough. Haikyuu just has excellent writing. There are so many details about Volleyball. The writer clearly knew what he was doing. He played Volleyball himself too. It's an encyclopedia of Volleyball. Rules, Techniques, strategies, state of mind, risks, body maintenance, comradery, differences, how to deal with wins and losses, all sorts of things. Many of the concepts are still up ahead...in the manga. This entire series is excellent. The characters are written so well too. Not one protagonist, but many characters with great backstories, and all of them matter; Because at the end of the day it's not about a character, but about the love for the sport Volleyball, and how you can play it from your youth into old age. Beautiful.

I appreciate that Kinoshita finally got to feel the value he added to the team! Even without his own epic moment of play in the match, he helped save the day. Kinoshita dedicated so many hours to jump float serving practice, which for Noya was overhand receive practice---without those reps, who knows if Noya would've been able to recollect himself? It reminds me of Magic Johnson---when asked for the toughest defenders who ever guarded him, he gave a short list, and it ended with emphasis on his own teammate Michael Cooper "beating [him] up every day in practice". This is like the volleyball version: showing up for all those months, blasting Nishinoya's fingers with all those jump float serves, all that WAS the value. And it DID pay off in the plays on court.

Also, I'm sure the twins love each other as brothers. It's just bickering. See how Osamu shoots the ball at the back of Atsumu's head during the flashback? Furudate-sensei really knows how to write and develop his characters, as well as deliver them in a way that moves the audience. This set goes to 25. The game with Shiratorizawa only went to a 15-point tie breaker because they were playing a regular best-of-5-set volleyball match, with court-side changes at the first 8th and 16th point. And that is reserved to finals only in the qualifying tournament, and semi-finals and finals for the main tournament. The other games will always be a best-of-3-set match, with all sets going to 25 points. It's this way so they can play all of the tournament, which have 52 (!!!) teams participating, in only 5 days. The Twins' relationship is so interesting, because it's clear they have been through the gauntlet of figuring out individual identity within an identical twin relationship, and Osamu was the first one to realise that he didn't feel the need to compete with his brother over everything. It's really common in identical twins to have a 'break-up' in teenage years, where they figure out who they are apart from their twin. Osamu seems like he figured it out first, because he realised he didn't feel the same way about volleyball that Atsumu does.

The twins absolute love each other that's why they're at each other's throats all the time because they can count on each other to be there and ready to go when they other wants to step up to the challenge. Its trust that they'll always have each other's back that lets them almost kill each other all the time.

finally the Twins and Noya's past! That sentence from the Coach does a very good job explaining Tsumu's personality imo. I know at first it's so easy to think of him like a jerk (or another Oikawa in your case XD) but he is just like lot of athletes out there I think, the confident and egoistic prodigy. That attitude he gives his spikers when they don't perform well I believe it's not mean-spirited (at least always haha, he could use some communication skills tbh), it's just that he has worked sooo hard and sooo diligently to optimize his skills and be able to give his spikers exactly what they need to score, that he demands the respect he deserves for his dedication, and expects his teammates to match such dedication too. Tbh I find this trait of him so charming, his passion and care for Volleyball is amazing, and even if he seems way too arrogant sometimes, I think we needed a character in Haikyuu with some extra egoism and confidence to spice things up, everyone is sooo nice! 😅 For the twins relationship??? They adore each other, don't worry! It shows better later, how much they depend on each other and their complete support to their other half, it's just that both are brats sometimes, totally normal siblings relationship for me 😂 The Kinoshita part was just too relatable, there are times one just wants to be he hero of the day but sadly that's not how life works all the time, but seeing the characters grow from these types of situations is such a journey ;O; Haikyuu has way too many life lessons 🥰

I was laughing at the parts from 19 when you kept wanting tsuki to kill block that spike and found it hard to not mention it. Loved when you realized what he was doing and called yourself out for it. That set at the end is nuts no mater how many times I have seen this episode.

In manga the chapter with Kinoshita-Noya moment is called "Hero of the Guardian Deity". Episode is not only about them so authors changed the title a bit, but I think the manga title is better for that part of the story. Also about twins: the cutest moment was when after fighting one of them offered to play a game. That tiny bit shows that doesn't matter how many times they fight, they will always be next to each other, play together, because that's what they enjoy the most. Love the brothers. Atsumu - best setter!!!

Samu and Tsumu are fierce rivals but they're very close. They're not totally unlike Hinata and Kageyama who frequently poke at each other and occasionally fight (once). We see them lying awake in bed the night after their fist fight at school. Tsumu asks if Samu wants to play Winning 11, a video game, and Samu accepts without missing a beat. They've already moved on from the name calling and fighting.

I love that the manga chapter with Kinoshita's and Noya's moment is named "Hero of the Guardian Deity" and how you mentioned that he is a hero here. He wanted to be a hero on the court, and he was, even though it was not in the way he predicted. I love how Haikyuu doesn't tell you that "If you try really hard, you will succeed" but "If you try really hard, you can still fail" but it's alright, because you're still a hero in some other way. I think Aran's words "The biggest blessing Atsumu has... it's actually Osamu" convey their relationship perfectly. Atsumu gets the luxury of competing and developing and not having to worry about others, because Osamu will never lose to him and they will always catch up to each other. Another thing I find interesting is Aran's words "Osamu is a bit better", and aside from volleyball thing, Osanu is actually a bit taller and weight more than Atsumu, like he is always a bit ahead and that gives Atsumu a opponent for a life time. Someone said Atsumu was born with his own Hinata and I think that's true :)

I love Osamu as a character, he is not the protagonist of his arc, but he acknowledged that, in other media and even in haikyuu support characters always try to "surpass their limits", Osamu breaks the mold by accepting that he is good but he doesn't have it within him when it comes to volleyball. Rare trait to see

29:00 of course they do! Look at them, they're always together, they do everything together, of course they love each other even if they always fight! It's like Osamu's speech "I don't trust him, I simply know that the ball will be there" - it's a full trust admission!

29:38 About that, there is a bit more context in the manga. Osamu discovered down the line he didn't share the same passion for volleyball as Atsumu, but he kept at it precisely for his brother's sake, to make him grow. And in a way annoys him because that means he won't be able to follow Atsumu any longer after high school because he also has his own dream to make a reality.

Someone might've mentioned this already but just in case In scenes where it can be hard to tell who's who between the twins, their names hold the clue. Atsumu usually has bright colors, has the more boisterous personality, and higher pitched voice. Osamu wears muted colors, has the calmer personality, and lower pitched voice. It is meant to be a wordplay where Atsumu's name is based on the japanese word for "hot" (atsui) and Osamu's for "cold" (samui).
