I love a roll neck or a crew neck but told it wouldn’t work for me. I use necklaces or perhaps a scarf to create a line, like a v neck would. Pearls look fabulous with black and a bright lip if black isn’t one’s best neutral. What words come up most frequently when looking at our clothes if we were to describe them, especially our favourites. You give amazing advice. I was looking at a necklace yesterday against a cooler toned sweater and whilst I love the necklace and it looked alright, I noticed the cooler tone bracelet I have paired better, melted was the word you use. Whilst the necklace was fine and I was at home, it was fine but I am mindful now to implement this technique. Thanks Sarah, you are really helpful and I agree with not listening to the constant noise.

Excellent insight, nice vid, thank you! For me, at 71, I think having an "outfit" most every day is important -- not anything fantastic but the idea is to fix the hair, a dash of makeup, and dress to feel "put together". And always a pair of earrings! This approach helps on two counts -- it makes me feel ready and able. to be productive, not just slouching around half-assed, as it were. Being put together helps me think -- I noticed this when I started to work from home. Also, if someone stops by or I have to pop out to the mailbox or the store - I look appropriate (& invariably I'll run into someone I know!) Looking as if you've given some thought to your presentation to the world is an important part of confidence and the ability to interact. In one's 20s, 30s it's easy to look great, now it takes a bit of effort, but it's worth it.

One thing that has worked for me when shopping, is that if I find something I like, I tell myself "If you go 3 days from now, and still think about the item, then yes you should consider getting it. But if you forget it right away, it wasn't meant to be". I saw a dress the other day that was in my seasonal color palette, and I was unsure whether to get it or not, so I decided not to. But I kept on thinking about it, so I went back to the store yesterday and tried it on, and it looked really good on me, and it was the kind of dress I could use to a dinner party but also to dress more formal at work, so I knew I would use it often. I am happy I went back at bought it. However, for items I rushed to buy, some of those have been hidden away in my closet for years... never used them.

Yes, this is great advise. Especially the browse frequently, buy infrequently. This is something I started to do this year. You can also do that online with a wishlist (and be surprised, how few of the items you actually buy, if you think it over. Also, just because a clothing item wasn't expensive, one shouldn't treat it as expendable. You can still take good care of items that are not that great of a quality but still lovely.
@sarahryanthestylecoach Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with that, we should treat our clothes as valuable items, whether they cost $5 or $5000! :)

Another tip. Take your personal assistant with you ;) A friend that enjoys playing around with fashion, maybe can give their opinion, maybe challenge you to try out sth out of your comfort zone. Someone that does not mind bringing you the next size or the other colour of a garment, or a matching belt (and you wait in the dress cabin in your underwear so you cannot easily run out and grab it yourself, and you should watch your purse and shoes anyway.) A willing "assistant" that also hangs back the many clothes that you put on (so the staff will not curse you -or insisting you may not take more than xx pieces into the change room.) Some boyfriends or husbands can be trained to be helpful in that way. Well, to a degree ;) And maybe they accept the same service for themselves. Which is another issue: the man that walks into the store and does not have the patience to try on a few things - even though they get excellent service and would get the garments brought to them, either by sales staff or a friend or a partner)

AVOID clearance sales - or at least factor in the temptation. If you would not have bought it at full price you likely do not need it at the lower price (and will not wear it anyway). Understand the concept of cost per wear. Train your eye and then invest in some really good, really flattering and versatile basics. Learning to alter garments (or finding a skilled seamstress with a good eye !) If you find one be generous and tip her. You want her to stay in biz, and if they have to reduce their client base, you want to be among the clients that she keeps.

I actually have done this all my life on accident. I just was always super picky about colours and textures and the way clothes act on my body. Also they need to accommodate my need for warmth or have a cooling effect. I pretty early landed on silk and wool and cashmere and know what exactly works, so I buy it secondhand from depop. Now I have the rather strange issue of looking too well put together for my age and field of work. The only thing I still struggle with sometimes is being pale olive and not being sure about what season I actually do belong to. Haha but that’s okay I guess

Go shopping (without money) with a patient friend. Wear some make-up and shoes you can easily remove, and practical (but flattering if neutral garments). Well if you need neutrals you can get them from the shop. And the friend should be willing to bring you the other size or the other colour .... And make it a rule to try out things that are not in your lane. Lighting is usually awful in the stores.

My body shape is difficult to fit (under 5'2", shorter middle body with a menopause middle on top of a rectangle shape). I browse frequently, but I only buy when I need something. Therefore, if I find something that suits my coloring and fits my proportions, I will purchase it immediately. Once I get home, I will try it on again with other items in my wardrobe. If it doesn't suit me as much as I had expected, I have no problem taking it back the very next day. I have learned to walk away from things that have "my colors, but they are not truly my style". And, I go through my closets every season to purge what doesn't suit me anymore, while also assessing what I can keep by doing some alterations while losing weight.

A good hair cut / hair style (sometimes colour) is key, find the most flattering hairstyle you have the skills (and time) to maintain. Some women are invested into growing their hair, but it is rather thin and sleek, and they would need to have volume at the top and the sides of their face or it should end at the chin to be more flattering. (Just saw a video recommended, a colour consulation, the client has strawberry blonde hair,). The long straight thin hair is not doing the client (her face shape) any favors. The colour is an asset. Maybe she could learn to have a flattering updo ? (so it would create the right volume for her face shape and it would look fuller, and she would get the full benefit of her hair colour). Her hair may break if she gets a perm - It takes skill and time to create the waves that would create the volume she needs. Else another cut (layers, or even a bob) would be much more flattering). Of course a bob means more expenses for the hair salon ....

Sarah,can I please ask if you've ever viewed Kettlewell colors, clothes? I'd like to know where you think each of the colors on there falls sub-season wise. Trying to figure out why things like the 'stone' color are sitting in all the seasons. It's higher budget than is typical for me,but on a good point a lot of their clothes don't seem to be made in china. I prefer that they be 100% natural materials if feasible for the item, directly sourced rather than manufactured obscurely ,fit well,be my style and color if it's perfect. I'd love a video categorizing the colors on their site ,please. The "damson" purple for instance appears autumnal to me.
@sarahryanthestylecoach Жыл бұрын
I have no experience in the Kettlewell clothes unfortunately. I have noticed that some of the colours that appear in certain groups are surprising to me so I personally, I prefer shopping with greater choice from other shops and choosing colours for myself.
@MaryYoungblood-xy8vg Жыл бұрын
Kettlewell is under the Colour Me Beautiful company but in England they use the Tonal system (they are seasonal here in the states) They give you your dominant characteristic and put you into a palette accordingly. Their system has six palettes: warm, cool, deep, soft, clear,, and light. They will tell you your secondary and tertiary characteristics to help you wear colors effectively in your palette. So I am a warm spring. In their system my dominant is warm so that is my palette. My secondary is clear and my tertiary is light. So I can wear the warm palette pretty much as is but may need to avoid any dark/soft colors from outer reaches (remember warm palette would be a combo of warm springs and autumns) and I can pull in some colors from the clear and light palettes as needed to fill out my palette. I use them sparingly (clears as accents in prints or in lipstick and lights in colors like blush or eyeshadow as clear can get too bright if worn head to toe and light tends to wash me out.) It isn't that different than the flow/true system Sarah uses but they call it different name and have different way of getting people into their palette. All of these systems are based generally on the same concepts of undertones, value, and chroma (intensity) and are based on the work of Munsell and others
@marywicks9334 Жыл бұрын
Kettlewell want to maximise their sales so that’s why they allocate colours to more than one category whether seasonal (House of Colour) or tonal. I was given a Spring rating by House of Colour and sometimes take what they’re saying is a Spring piece with a pinch of salt. If I want to be really sure then I look at pieces that are given just to Spring.

That's one thing I hate about fashion is when you look around and all the women are wearing the same exact thing. I've never had the desire to look like anyone else. I feel like style should be personal and not just what you see on social media and run out and buy without a second thought. Also I think style should be broad and not putting yourself into such a narrow box. I wear different stuff in different styles all the time. Some days I'm feeling more laid back and some days I wanna make a splash lol.
