Oh Sarah. I've only been watching your channel a couple of weeks or so, as you know, and I've just been filling in a few minutes by watching your short videos. After reading Billy Bryson's book I thought you were maybe in for a treat, but when I saw you losing weight so quickly and feeling so low, I began to wonder. You proved how strong you could be both mentally and in stamina, and though I was shocked - I am proud of you. You are such a role model. xx

Okay Sarah, if this doesn't get a person pumped towards reaching their goals, then they must be in a coma. You summed up in this short film, exactly why I am doing my thru-hike of the A.T. next February. I want to show my daughters (21, 18 and 16) that once you set a major goal and work hard, diligent, research, train and give it your all...even when your tank feels empty...then and only then will that goal surface. Nothing in life worth a damn is free. Grab it and hold on. I just subscribed and clicked the bell. Can't wait to see what is coming next!

I'm glad you hiked the AT but hope you do your next thru hike in a more relaxed time that doesn't come across in a KZbin video as incessant self induced misery. The trail's founder Benton MacKaye lamented all those turning the trail into a race and thought there should be an award for those who took the longest to thru hike. And to take the time "to see and to see what you see.". You are a talented and determined hiker. But I hope you get to enjoy your next hike.

Hi Bob - thank you so much for taking the time to watch the short video and comment. I appreciate what you are saying. I saw all of the trail - there are 99 daily vlogs which you can watch so you can see what it was like daily. I enjoyed the hike - it is one of the best experiences I've done. I'm also aware that hiking is not always enjoyable and you can't force emotions - you feel what you feel and everyone experiences a hike differently. There is no perfect way to hike - there is no ideal time frame - long or short you are still out there hiking - you just have to hike for you. I believe by having the bad days you learn to appreciate the good days. Best of luck with all of your hikes. Sarah

I also hiked in 2017 but I did it barefoot and only did 600 miles. I congratulate you on this achievement! Wish I had ran into you out there. My biggest day was 26 miles but that took me 11 straight hours of non stop walking with only a 2 minute break to get water. I took a zero or two every week. You only taking two is quite impressive to say the least. If you ever hike it again let me know, I would love to find you out there!
@toughgirlchallenges5 жыл бұрын
Massive congratulations 600 miles is a huge achievement and bare foot as well!! The great thing about the AT is there is no one way to hike it - hike it with shoes, hike in boots, trainers, hike it barefoot - equally there is no one correct way to walk, - bash out the miles or take lots of breaks it is completely up to you. I actually popped back in 2018 to do a few days hiking and it was so awesome to get back out on the trail. I don't think I would hike the whole thing again, but I would love to go back to the white mountains! Best of luck with the rest of your hikes!

I don't understand why anyone would put their health at risk to say they have accomplished a goal? God has given me goals and plans for my life, but not at the cost of my risking my health, losing a limb or my life just to check it off my bucket list. I heard on other video's that the norovirus runs rampant along the AT because people do not bury their shit. It runs off into the streams contaminating the water. At the same time hikers are drinking the water from those streams. You think it's safe to drink because you're using a water filtration system but you are not. As a result when you get the norovirus, the symptoms are stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea and the cycle continues because the norovirus is very contagious. I'm glad you were able to make it to the end without serious complications.

But you live and your learn and you continue to push yourself to help you grow and develop. I learnt a huge amount by undertaking this challenge. And I understand it's not for everyone, and that's ok. It's why people say - hike your own hike. I did the AT in 2017 and didn't have any issues - I'm not sure what's gone on since. I hope people would be burying their poop and trying to be as hygiene as possible while on the trail. thank you for watching the vlogs and best of luck with your goals and plans

That's epic. I tried to do the AT in 2018 but only got through 80% of it. And I had five months! But it was a lot harder than I imagined, and I turned 42 on the trail. For some people this doesn't seem to make a difference but for me it seems to have. A lot of people in the comments here are saying to slow down and enjoy the trail, but realistically the trail towns are nice and all, but out on the trail, so much of it looks the same. I wish I could have finished like you. I just found it too hard, so I can appreciate you finishing it. good on you.
@toughgirlchallenges5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kieran - 80% is awesome!! It's a long trail!!! You can always go back at a later date (if you want to ) and finish the final 20% (what 20% have you got left to do?). I really do think people underestimate the challenges of a thru hike and people have this idea about it all being fabulous all of the time, beautiful weather, great people, nice and easy hiking and their understanding of a 'challenging' hike is completely different! The AT is the equivalent of going up and down Mt Everest 16 times!! That is a lot of climbing and descending. Hence why so many people quit after the first 40 miles!! You did fantastically well - focus on what you have achieved xx

Question: Do you have a gear list posted anywhere? I was impressed by your gear - even the stuff patched with duct tape!
@toughgirlchallenges4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching. I think all to often people only get to see one side of the hike- there are tough days out there - which is why so many people don't finish it. If you check out toughgirlchallenges website -there are gear lists and there are also blog posts with details on the costs etc

That is quite a feat. Everyone should hike their own hike and good for you for accomplishing your goal. However, I hope people watching this know the AT can be a really fun experience if they take time to swim in the rivers and lakes, feel the earth beneath their feet, and linger on the mountain peaks. In fact, it can be a spiritual journey if they open themselves to that experience. Good luck on your future endeavors.

Good luck - the trail is an incredible experience and I wish you all the success, just take it one day at a time and you will reach the Katahdin sign - ps a great top tip is not to compare ourself to anyone else on the trail - do you - do your own hike and make it work for you.

@toughgirlchallenges2 жыл бұрын
awesome! - I worked with a pt - focused on building a lot of strength and endurance - lots of walks with a heavy pack, occasionally bit of cross training - running and cycling and - if you go to my website - there is a detailed plan of what I did and what worked for me. my top tip would be to only think of the first 2 weeks - after that your body will have adapted. The key thing is to be slightly undertrained by the time you get to the trail so that you don't peak too soon. You also don't want to get injured before you start. So aim for fit and healthy and also think about the mental Side of the challenge. I also put on more weight as I was aware that I would lose a lot during the hike. Train with a weighted pack and do hills - good luck - such a great challenge. You'll have a fabulous time!!!!

After fully recovering from this, a person probably would feel super great! It’s probably really good for somebody in the long run. Jumpstarting the metabolism, losing weight and building that muscle...
@toughgirlchallenges5 жыл бұрын
I think it would depend on the person and the shape you started in. I was super fit already and had put on a stone in weight before I started. I lost a lot of fat and muscle mass as well. It's probably taken me over a year to even start getting back to the kind of muscle and strength I had previously. I also ended up suffering from body dysmorphia as I was so tiny for so long, when I got back to my normal weight and size, I ended up feeling massive!!!
@cheerbearsue5 жыл бұрын
Sarah Williams Omg! So, doing this took muscles off of you? You’re using them...how can it do that?
@toughgirlchallenges5 жыл бұрын
@@cheerbearsue i was burning so many calories - I could not replace them - the first thing the body will start using is fat - towards the end muscle was starting to be used as well. I wasn't able to eat enough protein to build muscle at the same time - as I was in so much deficit. You see this a lot with men - so men will finish the trail and will have lost a huge amount of fat and muscle - looking very skeletal - most women when they do it in 5/6 months - will lose fat, but will also get more toned at the same time - hence women looking stronger - obviously everyone is different in how much or little this happens.

Hi Lucky Hiker - thank you for watching the short video - I've done a lot of endurance challenges previously and really wanted to test myself this time.. I could have walked the AT in 4 month/5 months with no issue - it would have been very easy, it would not have challenged me at all and therefore I would not get to learn or grow as a person. I wanted a tough, physical challenge that would put me under pressure, which would be hard. I may have cried a lot - but I made it, I didn't quit when it got hard, I didn't quit when it hurt, I didn't quit when I was tired. I kept on going - you may see torture - but for me - I see resilience, grit determination, focus, & belief. Best of luck with all your hikes - ps - you can also watch all the daily vlogs from the trail

Was there any particular reason for pushing for 100 days, rather than taking some extra time? I’m a section hiker; and while hiking the New York section (just a few weeks ago), I met two thruhikers who are going about your speed. I asked them the same question (they were aiming for 32 miles the next day, to my 20 or so), and one had a time limit with his job, and the other had a wedding that he had to get to (two other thruhikers this year have a wedding planned, and jumped several states ahead, as the heat in Pennsylvania was slowing them down too much, with the full intention to go back and fill in the gap after their wedding). My #1 favorite thing about hiking is the solitude, coupled with the physical challenge, the stunning scenery; for me, there is no real divide between these reasons. My #2 favorite thing about hiking is meeting the other hikers! Occasionally I meet a strange one who I’m happy to not meet again; but, the vast vast majority of them are amazing people, all inspiring in their own unique ways!

Thanks for your question! I aimed for 100 days on the Appalachian Trail because it felt like a good balance between challenge and accomplishment for me. I wanted to experience the trail’s beauty while pushing my limits a bit! I totally understand the time constraints some hikers face-life can definitely get in the way of these adventures. I also share your love for the solitude and stunning scenery; there’s something magical about being out there in nature. Meeting fellow hikers is a highlight, too! It’s amazing how everyone has their own story and motivation, and those interactions can really enrich the experience. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences as a section hiker; it sounds like you have a wonderful approach to the trail!
