I composed a piece (which I'm resurrecting now) in 1994 called "Christmas at the Skater's Pavilion: Sarajevo, 1994." People have described it as almost music box in tone. The whole skaters pavilion was bombed out, the main parade field where the athletes stood is now a graveyard...the podiums where they received medals is where people stood to be executed. Simply mind-blowingly tragic.

This video shows that the so called "human ingeniuity" can´t hold up to the changes of time and how fragile our life can be! So hard to believe that the places, where humans from all over the world came together and celebrated the beauty of being together are now crumbling down and nature takes back what belongs to her, because of a sensless war that took so many lives and only left over ruins. They are a reminder of bad times and that it should never happen again!

Nice film. I feel compelled to say that Sarajevo' is exempt in that its Olympic venues were destroyed by armed conflict and not by negligence of corrupt public servants motivated by greed-driven lobbyists of the construction and real estate industries. One only needs to look at Rio de Janeiro where thousands have been driven from their homes by a couple of influential developers, sanctioned by Rio city hall, all in the name of the Olympic movement.

Can Sarajevo do it again? Completely rebuild all 1984 Olympic venues. Add additional ones for the new sports. Land up north of the Olympic Stadium could serve as a new CBD. Build more high rises here and other infrastructure. A new CBD could have: - An Olympic Village - Media Village - A Convention Center (for the Main Media Center) - Several Hotels - A new large Arena for either Ice Hockey I or Figure Skating/Short Track Speed Skating (which should supplement Juan Antonio Samaranch Arena, not replace it) - A smaller Arena for Ice Hockey II - Plenty of places to eat/shop, maybe even a new mall. This CBD could connect to the rest of Sarajevo with the proposed underground metro. A 2 line system might work, supplementing already existing tram lines and bus routes. This will definitely be an integral part of the healing process and will provide much lasting legacy for Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina and the overall region.

It's sad, but I think the venue would look pretty much like this even if the war hadn't taken place. I mean, what are you going to do with a luge track and a ski jump if your country doesn't regularly hold luge and ski events? Olympic venues in other countries end up the same way, because it's just about impossible for a city to maintain all those huge venues without bookings, and finding someone who wants to book a gigantic venue for, say, volleyball or baseball in a country that doesn't have a lot of interest in the port is not going to happen. So, the venues get abandoned and rot. It's inevitable.
@theirondukew.85226 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. Let's take the 1976 summer olympics in Montreal for instance. It was so expensive the city paid its last loan back after 30 years! The last payment was in November 2006. Now bear in mind this was in Toronto, the 2nd largest city in Canada with a population of 1,7 million (4,1 million counting the metropolitan population) and summer and winter sport is huge in Canada. Some of the facilities of the Montreal olympics have been abandoned or destroyed. Even the olympic stadium never became popular and today it lacks a permanent tenant since all the major Montreal sport teams have moved away. The stadium also fell into disrepair and had to be renovated. Denver were originally scheduled to organise the 1976 winter olympics but decided it was way too expensive and thus rejected the games (in a 1972 referendum no less). Therefore Innsbruck, Austria got the games, and they had already organised them 12 years prior and could simply update existing facilities. Sarajevo was unlikely to see a huge rise in winter tourism following the 1984 olympics. To my knowledge the city never hosted any major winter sport world championships prior to the olympics and never did after the olympic games were over. Meanwhile the Slovenian alps (then part of Yugoslavia) did see their fair share of slalom championships and were part of the Alps with all its winter tourism. In hindsight one can wonder why the Yugoslav sport committee picked Sarajevo to host the games. In fact most Yugoslav winter athletes were Slovenian. Would have made more sense having the games in Slovenia. The Sarajevo olympic games ended in 1984 but it took another 8 years before the civil war broke out in 1992. During those years the luge track was never used again and neither were the ski jumping hills. Ski jumping is huge in Finland, Norway, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Poland and Slovenia - but never had a following in Bosnia and still doesn't. Apparently the plan of Austrian investors to renovate the hills for future competition came to naught. There simply exists no local interest and foreigners are equally unlikely to travel to a venue in which ski jumping is an obscure sport. So your assessment that the facilities would have been abandoned and fallen into disrepair even if there never had been a war is correct. Sure, the damage may not have been as serious but we'd still see serious decay. Above all, the civil war has since long been over but no impetus has been shown into restoring those facilities to their former glory. There's very little valid reason to invest money into a project unlikely to yield income. Again I bring up Montreal as an example of a metropolis at peace which still never managed to make the olympic stadium popular. Here's what I've read. The 1984 winter olympics did dramatically increase recreational skiing among the locals. No mention of increased tourism. So while the locals no doubt blame the war for the terrible state of these facilities the fact remains the war ended in 1995 which is 23 years ago. Had there never been a war it's likely they would have been abandoned or kept alive with government alms at best.
@AllenManor6 жыл бұрын
Excellently stated. There's talk of the Olympics, particularly the Winter Olympics, just being held in the same established venue or at least in a revolving selection of established venues to keep these sort of "white elephant" scenarios from happening (not to mention to keep countries from bankrupting themselves). I think the International Olympic Committee is not in favor but it makes a great deal of sense. I think it's been proposed that Los Angeles is the ideal location for hosting the Summer Olympics and a location in the Alps (I can't remember, I think in Austria or Switzerland) for hosting the Winter Olympics.
@SarahB18636 жыл бұрын
The IOC used to be against the idea because they liked the perks they got when cities competed for the Games. Now nobody wants to host them; they're expensive and hugely disruptive. So maybe now the IOC might be more open, that is, if the cities themselves are willing to take on the expense. My suggestion would be to have maybe 3 revolving sites for each Olympics AND, have the Western and Eastern hemispheres alternate. That is, if you have a Summer Olympics in, say, China, don't have the next Winter Olympics in Japan - have it in Canada or the U.S. instead, so we don't have what's going on now, with 3 Olympics in a row ALL being held in Asia (Pyeongchang, South Korea; Tokyo, Japan; Beijing, China). The huge time zone difference (+14 hours) for Korea meant that the TV ratings for NBC plummeted, and the Americans got to see very few events live, unless they were willing to either stay up very late or get up very early in the morning. That this situation isn't going to change for the next TWO Olympics isn't making NBC happy, I'm sure.

Sarah B Apparently that bobsled track cost 8 million and that was back in 1984! I was fortunate enough to watch the games on TV but can't believe this is how it looks now, maybe there should be a way of making temperary tracks or jumps that can be dismantled after the games are over rather than just letting them go to ruin, all looks so ugly now what a shame.

Please. It's not like the area had booming international (or even local Yugoslav) tourism following the Olympic Games. People looking to go skiing in Europe either went to Zermatt Switzerland, Cortina d'Ampezzo Italy, Val d'Isere France, Chamonix France, St Anton am Arlberg Austria or St Moritz Switzerland. And aside from those obvious ski resorts there are dozens of "low cost" winter resorts for drunk teens to go to. Let's postulate a reality where the Civil Wars of former Yugoslavia never happened. There's tons of money to develop the region? No, not likely. The economy was in tatters even before the war - and arguably was the culprit for the disillusioned people starting the blame game and seeking consolation in nationalism and religion. It's no coincidence Hitler came to power after the Great Depression struck Germany particularly hard and made millions of Germans lose their jobs. No economic depression no nazis. Simple as that. The root problem was that two whole generations had grown up with the economic system in Yugoslavia which sounded good on paper but basically relied on people keeping quiet and not questioning the finances of the government. On top of that a high level of complacency existed since people were getting paid for their jobs whether they did it casually and incredibly laid back or not. So following the collapse of Yugoslavia the overwhelming majority only ever knew the previous economic system and had nothing to compare it to. The only ones who truly understood the new piranha pond "free market" were criminals and crime syndicates. They found it incredibly easy to move in and exploit the power vacuum. And unfortunately this mentality pretty much existed among the people in the days of Yugoslavia as well with the difference nobody was going to stop them this time. Obviously a stable foundation upon which to build a country isn't present here. While it certainly is a crude oversimplification, and I abhor urban "psychology", there is a level of truth in the expression:"Those who live in the past do so because they can't see a future." And in the entire Balkans people seem forever stuck in the past. The past defines them. Not the future. I've talked to Romanians and they say it's pretty much the same there. Their system is rotten to the core but nobody does anything to change it for the better. The war exacerbated the issues in Bosnia but things were bad years before the war and now the war has been over for a quarter of a century and there's still very little happening in Bosnia. Both German and Japan got bombed to utter destruction during WWII and millions were homeless when the war was over. For some reason those nations looked at everything which had been wrong and learned from it and rebuilt themselves. They too could have blamed the allies for destroying their countries and leveling their cities (read what happened to Dresden and the allied firebombings) forever. They left the past behind and built something new. With hard work and tenacity. You won't see that in Bosnia anytime soon. Just the same old "Blame everything which is wrong on somebody else." And until people realize what I said and change there won't be any progress in the Balkans. Long story short. This Olympic park would most likely have deteriorated or fallen into disuse even without the war and the JNA.
@zell8635 жыл бұрын
Before all wrong place to get Olympic games. When it was build there was discussion why they need it as there is not winter sports traditions around. Slovenians, obviously right, was claim that OG should be in theirs republic as winter sports are developed there. However it is build by state money so we all OK with it.

1. Uništenu infrastrukturu 2. Raseljenost naroda (Izbeglice) 3. Bedu i sirotinju 4. Decu bez roditelja 5. Unesrećen narod 6. Stradanja. 7. I na kraju svega 24% teritorije gde živi Bošnjački narod. Eto tvog rezultata. A bilo mu je nudjeno da bude Predsednik u toj okrnjenoj Jugoslaviji -- sa uslovom da Bosna ostane u sastavu Jugoslavije. Pa vi vidite i sami zaključite rezultat svega.
