Sarasota County braces for additional flooding days after Hurricane Debby

Sad, but there is a REALLY good reason the land those homes are on used to be celery fields. It is extremely low lying and there is no ability to drain water away from the neighborhood. A handful of small retention ponds is not sufficient. The county should have never allowed a subdivision there in the first place.
@Bradimoose

What was it before celery feilds? was it a forest?

It was undeveloped land. No concrete or asphalt, just unpaved farm roads.

Yeah, they built these housing divisions up in no time, in places that already was prone to flooding. Palmer is notorious for going under. Sad to see though. 😓

@@peeko_luxx2873 Thank you for confirming! A Sarasotian here. I've been living around Sarasota for many decades. Also close to Bahia Vista. Philippi Creek storm drain can't handle all the new construction no more! Blame our Leaders and Politicians and also the Media for misinformation! There will be lawsuits!

It is alarming how many areas of Florida are pop up communities on swamps, low lying area and land unsuitable for development. Out west here in Broward county, it was the Everglades. Developers built large communities without allowing land to settle. Not only serious flooding but home walls cracking beyond repair . Dad did his research first before purchasing a home. Thank God he did

That has to be the reservoir. The idea that an emergency release of water from a reservoir will inevitably flood neighborhoods shows a criminally negligent poor planning of the zoning around it.

This is not normal. Debby was a TS not a Hurricane when it was close to Sarasota last week. The rain itself was moderate but looks like this is something with the zoning or blockage in the drainage downstream. This is standing water for a week and doesn't look like excess water during the storm run off.

Property near water is Prime Real Estate for developers . Especially in a State such as Florida . But living close to water in a Hurricane prone State such as Florida also comes with a very high risk of flooding . Those who buy in these areas are well aware of that risk going in .

Over building is the problem the city and county commissioners are to blame, the same over building is happening in Cape Coral, Florida as well, the Cape Coral city commissioners are ruining Cape Coral by approving huge Apartment complexes in nice neighborhoods and allowing mini storage units to be built in nice neighborhoods as well. Over Building is a problem all over the State of Florida. It needs to stop.

FEMA just makes up flood zone designations. Six years ago, FEMA said my house, on the Florida intracoastal, was in a flood zone. Five years ago, they said it wasn't. Two years ago, we had catastrophic flooding in Volusia County after Hurricane Ian, with nearly 30 inches of rain falling in my area in 24 hours. I didn't get a drop of water in my house. This year, FEMA said my house in in a flood zone.

I always get a chuckle out of seeing a reporter deliberately walking in the flood waters. Totally unnecessary to do their job, but always attempting to be part of the story instead of just reporting it. That being said, I feel terrible for all of the folks near where I live that have had their lives upended. How there are homes within spitting distance of lakes, creeks, and the ocean without flood insurance is beyond me. Nearly every single structure in Florida is at risk of flooding, regardless of what the area is designated on a FEMA map. Historical data is not relevant in making predictions of future events like a tropical storm that slowly moves over the area and dumps so much rain.

And it wasn't even record rain! The Sarasota area doubled in population in the last 20 years. New construction sites everywhere! Thousands of new homes and condos and businesses. Blame our Leaders, blame our Politicians! Changing farmland into residential! The main Philippi Creek storm drain can NOT handle this anymore! Of course the media would never talk about this! For the first time ever, Bradenton Raceway and Dragstrip was flooded! Why? Because of new construction sites all around and Land Clearing for future sites! Start the Lawsuits!

This is what happens when you have a local government and governor who is just interested in building, building, building and money. They don't take the time to properly survey the surrounding lands and do studies in what the environmental impacts might be and with climate change this will only get worse. Our old neighborhood had a dry retention pond but didnt have anywhere for the water to go when it does fill up, we almost flooded with Irma. The city still hasn't put in any pipes to drain off the water, you just have to hope the water dries up before the next water event comes along. Hurricane season is just ramping up, these people are screwed.
