As I never knew before………. One day when I was telling a bedtime story to my child, my son asked a question, “pitaji! You told that there is one God for each activity we do. Then why there are two Gods for knowledge, SriGanesh and Goddess Saraswati?” I had no answer to this question. I had to think on that. After some thinking, I remembered the story of the famous poet Kaalidaasa. Goddess Saraswati is also known as ‘VaagDevi’. I translated this as ‘Goddess of language’. I explained this to my son. But, still there was some doubt in my mind. My son’s next question was, “How was she born?” I didn’t have any answer for this question also. I couldn’t remember any story related to her appearance or marriage or something like that. I searched for the answer in some books and in internet. No luck. Then I consulted my bhuva, who has a very good knowledge in Indian mythology and ancient scriptures.She told, “Vaani HiranyGarvaVyaam Namaha”. At this stage I am not eligible to explain the total meaning of “HiranyaGarva” as I need to understand it more. But the word ‘Vaani’ in this shloka means the voice of ‘Bramha’, the ultimate source of the whole universe, appearing in the form of Goddess Saraswati. (Bramhaa is different from Bramha. Bramhaa is the one who always strives to know Bramha.) Yes! Saraswati is the voice of ‘Bramha’. She is the Goddess of voice. Voice comes much before language. Voice is never born. It was and is always there. That is why there is no story about birth of Goddess Saraswati. As formless Bramha (Niraakaara, Nirguna) took a form in ‘Shira sagara’, the voice of Bramha took form of pure white Goddess Saraswati with a ‘Veena’ in her hand. Pure white, as our voice is the purest form of expression before it is mixed with language. Sometimes a voice (different from language) in our world may appear bad, but it is purely to bring a change in and around the self. (Ex of different voices using the same written language or word: ‘Now open’ & ‘open now’) But why She has a Veena in her hand? A Veena is a musical instrument held at the level of heart. It’s the ancient instrument from which all most all string instruments are derived. It’s said that when a ‘Veena’ is played, every heart in its reach are surely affected to a little or great extent. (The other sound affecting to this level is ‘Conch’). ‘Swara’ or ‘voice’ or ‘what we want to express’ (different from ‘what we say’) and ‘Sabda’ or ‘sound’ or ‘how you express’ should meet at the level of heart. But we are making them meet at the level of our mind. The final expression can come out as music, dance, written language, spoken language or sign language. The finger movement on the strings indicates that you should play with all possible presentations; and chose the best presentation with the help of the vibrations from your heart; before you make the final expression or utterance. Vibrations generated in this way are sure to vibrate many other hearts and help them get ready to dance. A ‘Veena’ can make music for all the Navarasas of life or nine basic emotions of human mind. Then what is the meaning of Her name? Is it the feminine derivation of “Saaraswata” meaning “always present”? But, as I understand now, it may be “Swarasya Srotaha” or the “stream of voice”. She is a stream with her origin in ‘Bramha’. My children and even I were satisfied with these explanations. Both Swara or voice and Sabda or sound is expressed in permutation combination of seven beats like sa, re ga, ma…….. or do, re mi……… . Why seven only? Why not more? I don’t know. I am still searching. All these seven beats can again be expressed in 3 different degrees. 1. Nimna or lower 2. Madhyam or medium 3. Uttam or the best or the highest These degrees tell us that our expression should be graded according to situation. Sometimes just showing your eyes completes the task. In other times you may need to raise your voice.
