I think a beginner artist starting out with drawing, (and with the patience for shading) usually can make great art. When I started 5 years ago, I was bad at proportions, but extremely good at shading because I have the patience of a monk lol

Will forever recommend Prang semi-moist watercolours as a beginner set. Highly pigmented and you can get them for $6-7 depending where and where you purchase. I have higher quality pricier sets now and I still reach for Prang frequently

I'm a watercolor artist. Here's my recommendation for a beginner set that is surprisingly good quality and cheap!!! Yarka makes a set of 8, 10 or 12 pans for under $9. I started out with these back in the 90s and still keep them around. They are highly pigmented and non toxic. They don't have the chalky feel of many other beginner sets.

I've always wanted to try out Yarka St. Petersburg! They're a little harder to get where I live (usually only the huge sets are available to buy). I would love to try them out in the future once I find a good retailer.

I don't rely on Michael's for art supplies. I know they have a tonne of coupons all the time but I can't help but wonder why they mark everything up in the first place. I assume it's a scheme geared toward people who don't know they have those coupons and aren't aware of other art stores. There's lots of other options, though. Except hobby lobby, obviously.

When I wanted to try oil paints I bought winsor and newton waterbased oil paints and I love them! I started with red, yellow, blue, black and white and it's a great way to learn to mix colours as well :) Honestly I don't really know if I would buy any other colours outside of these.

Add a bright pink and an aqua blue (cyan) if your blue is more ‘violet/dark). If your red is more neutral or ‘orange’ add a magenta leaning ‘cool red’. That will allow all colours to be mixed. The exact red, yellow and blue effect which colours can or can’t be mixed. For convenience people add other colours as well as adding colours based on the subjects and colour pallet you use such as a brown or green that helps. I’d say Pthalo green is great for mixing but also having warm and cool versions of colours that are used as primaries. A neutral. And then neutral colours such as a yellow that lies right between cool (more green-lemon) and warm (more golden-orange leaning) can also really help. I’d also mention that if you paint bright subjects like lights, flowers, tropical fish; a basic red, yellow, blue will not work or mix the correct colours. You can’t make a colour brighter or more intense only more dull/neutral so get the brightest base primaries you can! And a neutral or orange red literally can’t mix bright pinks or proper purples or magentas. It can’t. An very neutral or ultramarine/dark blue literally can’t mix vibrant cyan/turquoise and glowing summer or tropical sky. It can’t. get a bright glowing primary cyan or cobalt teal! If your yellow isn’t neutral and leans cool or warm it will also limit your mixes! If the yellow is cool you will find oranges less pleasant if mixed with the ‘wrong red’ therefore a bright orange like vibrant fire or a tropical bird will be ‘off’. While if your yellow is too warm you won;t be able to mix greens properly. The greens will always be too warm and muddy and proper yellow -green or green gold will not be possible to get the sunlight in leaves or new growth or the colour of an emerald, etc. Limiting yourself with fewer primaries can literally cut off thousands of colours! Is it ‘close enough’ to you? Or do you feel the need for a more exact match? Proper pink flowers and purples, etc?

15:05 I wanted to try my hand at oils but I didn't want to buy all the extras that came with traditional oils and end up not liking it. So I tried the water-mixable oils. I remember how everyone said that 'oh oils are so buttery' but then the oils were so sticky even when mixing a bit of water with them and I gave up. No one really mentioned this in other videos I watched. But what you said is my exact experience, it was like painting with honey. And coming from a watercolour background I HATED it. This is giving me motivation to get a traditional oil set and try it again

Michael's is horrible with the price gouging! I saw that Amazon had a 9×12 Arches paper pad for $20.43.... Michael's had it for $29.96! And the Manager refused to price match me too! Even Hobby Lobby had it for under $20 as well! Just wanted to share this tidbit!

This was such an informative and interesting video! I'm a digital painter who's been longing to get into traditional painting and really struggling to know where to start. There's so many mediums and options open and with the prices of all the supplies it's very intimidating to choose, so I've been putting it off. Not only did your video show me that budget supplies can be practical and yield decent results, but I also learned the type of paints I've been wanting to find to recreate the same look and texture I use when working digitally. Thank you so much! I'm feeling more motivated than ever to begin because of your video :) !!

Hullo Sara, I believe that you were overly optimistic about a $20.00 budget! Soft pastels are the most expensive art supply I have ever tried! I do not believe that you can even try that medium under $100.00! I have a firm belief that beginners can do wonderful artwork and the best start you can give yourself use the best surface you can! I have enjoyed working with water soluble oils but use water ONLY for clean up! Use a medium for mixing and a water soluble oil medium for thinning and keeping to the fat over lean rule. I have been looking for videos featuring Chelsea Lavender spike oil as a substitute for mineral spirits or the dreaded turpentine! I hope you consider doing a video on that supply. I am truly impressed by your style and artworks! I am curious about your opinions about the Chelsea line of products? Thank you for sharing your amazing art under $20 creations! Truly wonderful!

Use them for painting they are incredible! 2) acrylic bottles 3) inkjoy pens 4) black spiral bound acid free hardcover 80 sheet sketchbook 5) other brushes some are great! 6) stabler pencils 7) white venal erasers 8) pallets Etc.

Primaries need warm and cool best also with a neutral. For more proper colour range add a bright pink, magenta and cyan to red, yellow and blue. Far better with a warm (golden-orange leaning yellow) and a cool (lemon more green leaning yellow) as well as a more neutral or orange leaning red, and a more ‘warm’ technically blue like ultramarine as well. You simply can’t mix any brighter( more glowing/ vibrant) colours than the brightness of the base primaries used! Get the most vibrant saturated primaries possible. You can dull or neutralize colours but you can’t make them more vibrant! With watercolour water makes pale otherwise use white. Add white gouache for opacity or milky more opaque colours with watercolour. You may prefer gouache (I adore gouache) gouache works better even in cheap paper when used thicker. You can force bad paper to work, but there are limits. Each paper has huge differences in properties and how it works with your supplies! The paper is such a factor! Don’t forget to try different shapes of brushes. Not just round. Round works great with watercolour but for thicker paints especially gouache really try flat, angle and filbert even more often. Walmart can also have good synthetic brush sets, lol there for fine point brushes especially. NEVER USE ANYTHING FOR FOOD OR DRINK YOU HAVE EVEN ONCE USED FOR ART! And remember even just an he pencil decent white venal eraser, dollar metal sharpener and a pile of printer paper is enough to do a lot of art! If you upgrade from that get a black coloured pencil for deep darks ( a good one like prismacolor), and consider other art pencils like a set! My favourite pencils to art with are the Faber-Castel 9000s’ I recommend 2b and 4b as most useful! More colours are amazing but consider building up over time. I also must highly recommend the Van Gogh paints I still consider the full art grade even if they are ‘technically’ student grade and lower priced! Certain colours will also be inspiring to you so don’t feel limited to ‘standard sets’ or primaries. You can get just one thing at a time. You can do tonal studies monochromatically with just a good ultramarine blue for example as it can get very dark and be watered down to very pale. Or in oils just black and white! For oils a pallet knife and old piece of glass duct taped on the sides is a great pallet. Go monochromatic or greyscale and work on tones before colour as tonal control is the most vital for most art! If very broke also collect free pens, pencils, crayons, paper and other potential supplies when available such as at a restaurant if provided or sometimes companies give away pens and paper with their name/logo as advertising. Do the math with a calculator always include all tax and shipping before really determining the full price! Also beware import fees/duty. Try to buy local (within your own country) if possible this avoids import fees and stupid mark ups. Some options from overseas may still be better (such as Van gogh) shop around, take the time and also research on KZbin and stores not just one or the other; both. Get reviews on products before spending money. But also scoop up great deals in clearance or bargain stores when available and seasonal sales (back to school or just after at Walmart). Don’t just believe the ‘sale’ tag keep a record and do the math! Write down prices in a note book and the place/date. Stalk the sales! Keep things in your Amazon wish list BUT in a physical notebook write down the price! Then keep checking back until it’s ACTUALLY a great deal. Be patient and wait!

i don't think you really need to use an expensive range of supplies as a professional too until unless you want to provide a premium level or for your own satisfaction for being fade proofs, or lightfastness etc for the majority of the mediums for watercolours: in India, we have a brand called Camlin and brustro which provide cheap/ medium prices range with higher quality in Camlin we even have a product called photo colours which I have never come across in any other brand ( maybe its called by another name) which is basically ink but lot more pigmented so if you buy normal ink and use them with it you kinda get best of both the world. we have a lot of poster colours too, which is again in cheaper and a great medium then in acrylics and oils you have monte Marte, Camlin, gouache a very good Russian brand called sonnet and neva's masterclass gouache and the n you have miya himi guoache ( cheaper price range) you can also explore tempera paint( egg) with DIY and get those rich feel with cheap money and there is a lot to explore here oil pastels with brands like titi and mungyo and local brand brustro(great) with mediums like linseed oil and turpentine so you get the very interesting result and with good experience get to work them like oil paint. so they become a dual medium. then you have like ohuhu and their markers range wit their cheap pricing is really great. for pencil colours you have 48 set of luna steadlers they feel very similar to Prisma and they are pigmented too plus watercolour pencils so again a dual medium then you can up your paint texture game with using inksticks, crayons, oil pastels, pens etc.

I used a watercolour set like this back in school and was very unhappy using them for watercolour painings i saw on youtube and pinterest :( a friend gave me a single pan of paint from a high quality company. this color finally did what i saw in all the videos. so i invested in a little set of van gogh paints (15€) and i have no regrets. 🤗 they came with a brush that was good enough and i brought cheap watercolour paper (4€). Later I brought a small brush set (8€) and a water tank brush (1€).

Unfortunately, one of my niblings also got such a large, cheap art set for their last birthday. I hope that the bad quality doesn't ruin the creative and joy of drawing and painting, and that my nibling doesn't get any health problems from it. In such boxes, the materials often give off unhealthy chemicals and a child does not have the physical mass of an adult and is more likely to notice symptoms. What I also don't understand in this context is that my sibling asked me beforehand what kind of art materials I could recommend for their child to paint on canvas and which ones are the least harmful to health. We talked about it a little longer and I thought my sibling would take what I said seriously because they usually also pays attention to questionable additives in food and cosmetics and so on. But the temptation was probably too big not to think too much about a birthday present and not to have to spend a lot of money, even if their own child won't get much from it. I've already given the children some good, inexpensive drawing material, so at least they know that it's the material if drawing doesn't work properly with it. Such typical children's art supplies as coloured pencils, wax crayons, opaque watercolour paints and recently oil pastel crayons with silicone brushes for mixing, i don't trust these oil pastel crayons that no unhealthy substances are absorbed through the skin, so the silicone brushes for mixing so that the children don't use their hands for it.
@askialuna7717
@askialuna7717 2 жыл бұрын
I'm currently trying to get a good, cheap set of transparent watercolours and watercolour paper, recently I was only able to buy one in the shop. So that the children can try out whether they like some running paint and can practice controlling the amount of paint and water in the brush. So that they don't think later that watercolour painting is nothing for them. unlike me, I wanted to learn watercolour painting as a child and couldn't go along with the strong running paint and thought watercolour is not for children and only for adults and my box was then unused for years in the drawer, because I preferred to paint with children's opaque watercolour paints. If my parents make them a packet with books and children's pages from the newspaper every few months, I can always add some material to draw and paint as a gift. Just little things, i don't have that much money because i'm unable to work, but that doesn't stop me from spending part of my money on small gifts for painting and drawing. That's why i always see if i can find good, cheap and preferably harmless materials for the children. We have the division so i buy new materials for the children or talk to the parents about what they can buy which is good, and they buy the things when they are all gone. The crayons were relatively expensive at over 10€ a pack because they were made of beeswax. I have a limit of about 10€ per child for birthday and Christmas, and in between for example Easter and a packet it is 5€.

Okay so I’ve only just clicked and not watched anything yet, but my immediate thoughts were that it’s fully possible to create great art with mediocre supplies. Where it gets sticky is that beginner supplies often go with beginner skills, and skills are what make art really good, not supplies. I’d love to be proved wrong, though! (Someone please prove me wrong, lol, so I can figure out what I’m doing wrong)

Yes I mostly agree! But if a beginner is using terrible quality supplies, they will be fighting with the paints instead of only focusing on improving. So, as a good artist, I don't want to be creating good art in spite of the supplies I'm using. I'm glad that there are good options on a low budget!

Hobby lobby is owned by evangelicals who hate their own female employees, are very anti-lgbtq+, and refused to close their stores during a pandemic because the owner's wife received a "message from god" that they should stay open (continue to profit). Don't take my word alone, I encourage u to look into it as well.

I can't see the other reply, but they're so problematic! They lobbied to remove anti-discrimination laws against LGBTQ workers, deny employees birth control under their insurance, have stolen thousands of biblical artifacts from the Middle East, counterfeited more relics, and promote pro-slavery in their Creation Museum (plus some crazy stuff during Covid). Not a business I wanna give money to if I have other options.

I even think starting with a cheap watercolor set can ruin all the fun and you never want to do it again. If you know you love art and you want test watercolors, invest at least a little money. If you dont like watercolor at all, you still can sell them again. But starting with cheap no names products wich are chalky af for example will ruin everything right from the beginning. Same goes for paper in my opinion....

I doont think I've seen those bad art kits for anymore than prob 35 bucks, whoever spends 150 on them is a fool. since you can get a lot of high-end artist supplies for that price the big art and craft stores do usually have huge prices, which sucks for people who cant shop in other places.

@_vvsv23 I loveee the Turner Acryl Gouche paints! So much fun to use and they have lightfast ratings at the back of each tube as well. Turner sells their own acryl gouache retarder and I definitely recommend it so that the paints don't dry so fast on your palette or paper. I have never tried painting with oils so I would love to have the van gogh oil paints! Oil painting seems so therapeutic and have such a different process in comparison with painting using acrylics and gouache.

I've been drawing for a long time but I never did it in a serious manner since I have aphantasia and the fact that I couldn't picture things frustrated me a lot and I just kept feeling down about my art. But lately I came back to it since I do love it, after all in never stopped doodling . I mostly do graphite and colored pencils✨. I think ppl who are not experienced artists, who are just starting out and haven't developed set skills or style, find supplies to be difficult because they don't know how to make it work for them. It helps to have predictable outcomes. I felt like I was just not good at painting but it turned out the paints I was using were not good quality. When you have strong skills and a style it's easier to make something "good' because you know how to work color and texture to suit your work. But all in all if you have an interest/passion for art the quality of material doesn't matter when your starting out because it's just for fun.
testing out an ETCHR Sketchbook 🤔 my honest thoughts...
