Toadstool leathers from the Genus Sarcophyton are some of the most recognizable soft corals. Their name comes from their mushroom-like appearance. Toadstools are known for both being relatively easy to keep and growing to impressive size when mature.

I have a huge toadstool leather and it has been propagated several times. Right now it looks like an atomic bomb, a huge stalk and wide head. The stalk is about 5" in diameter and the head is 14" across. When I propagate it, I just give the frags away since it was given to me.

THAN! Great info and beatigul videos as always. Question: Do These toadstools reach a max size? I have one that's 13"x10" and shaped like an ear and the base is the size of my neck. Its 6 years old but only a self frag from when it was this size 3yrs ago, drooped & split from its own weght. Is that just going to keep happening? I Love its contrasting size and visual balance it gives to my reef , but it takes up one whole end of my 90g where many other corals cld grow there and below its shadow on the whole substrate. And isn't pulling its weight in the color dept. Any bigger and its gone.. but sortaxseems to have slowed growth. It shld have been touching the glass by now, but won't.

2:00 That "waxy layer" that it sheds is TOXIC and kills other corals. The Sarcophyton (devils hand) Coral was the fist coral I ever got for my new reef tank. ive been struggling with all my other corals not doing well and my candycane getting STN from the brown waxy stuff the leather sheds. Don't even bother trying to keep this with stony coral. Love the videos Than keep them coming
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 6 жыл бұрын
Stony corals don't like anything touching them really. Having said that, we have a tank right now that is half giant leathers and half SPS. The SPS in there are more bothered about touching each other than anything else strangely.

my toadstool coral had been in the tank maybe two weeks and was doing great. It then had a fall off a rock (only about 4 inches high) onto the sandbed. since then it has never come out properly - it occasionally has some fingers extend but not all of them. it still sheds but no matter where i move it, it doesnt seem happy. we have had it for about 2 months now. Any guesses??

My toadstool used to be bright green, it was getting too big so I fragged it, when it 'recovered' it was very pale, so were the frags.. it's now a year later, and still no colour.. has anyone heard this before? Iv tried different lighting, changed temps, different flow but still nothing, everything else is thriving.. I'm just about ready to throw them in the bin.

After we came back from holiday although the skimmer was running and we had a person instructed what to do everyday all our Sarcophytons were desintegrated. The last one that was really big had a hole on the bottom and although all the other corals Acantastreas, Lytophyton, Xenias etc were completley well he just turned into dust after free days. Any idea?

Hi: great video as always. I recently buy a long tentacle piece about a silver dollar or little more size, and is doing great. Is some kind of pinkish cream color and the feather mouth tips are white it's gorgeous. My only concern is placement, I have move him from the sand bed up to the middle side of the tank. There he got nice light intake but low to mid water flow. Where did you recommend me to place this guy. I read that they thrive basic every ware withing the tank. Should I move him to higher flow area, higher in the tank so he can have more movement? Or what did you recommend me? Thanks!

hi i have a long tentical green Toadstool Leather frag, size of 2" tall. Before purchase it's polyps were long and out. When i get it home it couldn't make its mind up wether to come out or not. 2nd day my hemet crab knock it over so i put it in place gently with my bare hands. Its now 2 weeks and the green tentical/polyps haven't come out. Did i burn/ bruise it by touching it? as there are small dark spots on it? and doest it usually take longer to adjust to the tank. Water is perfect

Sometimes they retract for a few days to shed. You might want to give it more flow to help the process.
