Bollywood also made some really great historical epics like Mughal-e-Azam, Jodhaa Akbar, Bajirao Mastaani, Ashoka and many others which are more drama based. Bahubali was the first big all out fantasy movie, that was its appeal. When it comes to bollywood (or tollywood, kollywood,etc.) they are basically commercial movies. There is also a parallel art cinema (multilingual) which is very underrated and doesn't receive any recognition. I will recommend The Court, Eeb Ay alloo, The Disciple, Udaan, Dev D, Omkaara, Haider, The Gangs of Wasseypur and Kahaani. P.S. I would suggest looking at the filmography of Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, Vikramaditya Motwane, Chaitanya Tamhane, Mani Ratnam, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Rajkumar Hirani, Bimal Roy and Guru Dutt.

Blue Sky getting shut down is a huge problem, because essentially it's Disney trying to weed out any and all parts of the animation game that aren't directly from them. You can say what you want about Blue Sky as a company, but at least they tried to be different with their movies. But Disney won't stand for that, and them doing this could potentially lead to the animation industry becoming more and more homogenized!

Blue Sky was in the process of making a movie adaptation of the graphic novel "Nimona" and was directed by Patrick Osborne, who directed the shorts "Feast" and "Pearl". It was looking to be the big reversal for the studios fortunes. They shut it down 10 months from completion. Also, Disney moving people to their other studios is a big lie, the studio is on the east coast, you cant just shuffle people over to California so easily without destroying peoples families if they have already put roots down in the east coast.

So having grown up watching Indian movies, here's the thing: it's not that they're designed to not make sense, it's more that the senses are prioritized over logic. How does the woman in the opening scene keep on holding the baby? Doesn't matter. She did it because she was brave, badass and sacrificed herself for the greater good. Why the fuck does the protagonist look exactly like his own father (same actor)? Don't matter. It's cool. It sticks with the audiences who is just there for escapism. I'm not trying to be the baahubali expert or something, I really enjoyed this episode, I'm just contributing my two cents

The Blue Sky news is unfortunate, but it's not weird at all. Layoffs happen with every merger. And Disney is already losing money due to covid so there's no reason to keep another animation studio running. (Not defending their decision, but it makes sense from a financial standpoint).
@hchappy1253 жыл бұрын
Lmao disney has so much fucking excess money--I don't buy that shit for a second.
@chiefgarvey113 жыл бұрын
@@hchappy125 Not really true. Theater release windows for animated features continue to shrink as more pile up and theaters continue to be closed or barely seeing audiences. Chance to make back money falls with that. Keep in mind Disney is pretty bloated with animation studios. If they need to shore up budget animation is an easy pick. Film releases, theme parks, cruises, and sports are some of their biggest income streams and they’ve ranged from entirely shut down to hobbling most the last year. Last fiscal year Disney reported a GAAP net loss of $2.83 Billion. That was in spite of many billions of dollars of cuts they put in. I don't like Disney and I don't like that they own so much, but this is just basic math.

42:05 Glad Adum loves Euphoria. Agree with most of what you said on Malcolm and Marie. Honestly I think what you're mentioning here is why trying to use this movie to put Levinson in the narcissistic writer/director comes off as way more mean spirited than something like Lady in the Water. Levinson might have had a more privileged life than most people, but the thing is that he still went through a significant period of drug use that (as I noticed he basically said in one of the press conferences back when Euphoria came out) was an attempt at trying to deal with intense mental health issues. He even got institutionalised a couple of times. And whilst obviously someone with that past isn't automatically unable to be criticised for being self indulgent and narcissistic in their art, to me, saying that about someone who almost destroyed themselves (especially if it was partially due to self hatred) is weirdly off-putting to me. It would have been one thing if I agreed that Malcolm and Marie was narcissistic, but I didn't feel like it was. Maybe I'm totally incorrect about this and maybe no one agrees, but this isn't an M. Night situation where he had a great rising career that hit a roadblock with The Village that he proceeded to nuke into oblivion with Lady in the Water, in the sense that he reacted to the bad reviews of the former poorly enough to where he made the latter the way it was, with it being received so much poorly and showed extreme signs of vanity. In comparison Malcolm and Marie at least pointed out that Malcolm was overreacting and looking like an idiot in front of his girlfriend during that scene. As well as making Malcolm a vain person all around, rather than that vanity just being in the script.
@DJGamingSmash3 жыл бұрын
YES! Part of what I love about the movie is it's objectivity. He doesn't see himself as in the right because he gave himself this character very purposely of being so consumed by purpose in composing art that he comes off as narcissistic as means of giving himself character flaws. Same for the girlfriend. There's as much to hate as their is to love because they're both relatably human in their vulnerability.
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel41683 жыл бұрын
@@DJGamingSmash The entire film is literally about why you shouldn't be a narcisstic artist and that even good excuses are all worth less than a simple apology. And whilst the final shot is somewhat up for interpretation (as to whether it is conclusive or not), to me it probably wouldn't have happened had Malcolm not said what he said. Even if the delivery was annoying or boring to someone, anyone calling this movie narcissistic should really redirect that criticism towards other movies. I can think of 10 or more films I'd call an example of narcissism.
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel41683 жыл бұрын
@@DJGamingSmash I agree on the humanity aspect and if there is one thing carried over in terms of character writing from Euphoria it's that no one is a one dimensional good or bad person.

Here's a bunch of movies that I'd say show narcissism in the creator more than Malcom and Marie: 1. Lady in the Water. Already explained and there's a lot online about it. 2. Transformers 1 and 2. Armageddon is referenced in the former and a Bad Boys 2 poster is shown in the latter. Cute references or self promotion? I think the latter. 3. The Fanatic. "Hey son, do you wanna listen to Limp Biznikt? Oh that's hot, that is nice" 4. Music. Sia cameos and talks about giving medicine to children in Haiti. 5. The Room. Everybody betray me. 6. I Love You Daddy (someone argued M and M was like this, I think that's insulting). Look at how much of a good guy I, Louis CK am, saving my daughter from a sexual predator! Oh wait, I'm kind of like that as well. Never mind. 7. That fake movie in Mr Bean's Holiday. (kind of a joke example) 8. The Brown Bunny, in which Vincent Gallo literally gets Chloe Sevigny to suck his dick.

The RLM guys are probably right in that the no line gimmick was out of him not wanting to learn a script.

People make it seem like the no line gimmick is some sort of brilliant artistic decision when I guarantee you it comes from laziness

@@lawcane I'm not going to bat for the movie like it's a masterpiece or something, but I have a hard time imagining how a character like him could have even had good lines in the movie that this one wanted to be. There was literally no point in giving _this_ main character lines in _this_ movie, so I'd take the silence any day over what else it could have been. And it made it more fun just watching those cliche characters trying to interact with or understand him and being confused by him just giving them nothing and keeping doing his own thing in this ridiculous scenario. It made him a lot more memorable than most movie protagonists, and hilariously somehow WAY more believable than most horror protagonists (the fact the movie shows that that bar is so low is really funny in and of itself to me). Even without any lines, the movie still made him an understandable but still interestingly kind of mysterious _dork_ of a character by the end of it. So I'd say it actually did add quite a bit, honestly.
@lawcane2 жыл бұрын
@@PhyreI3ird those are good points. I think the bigger problem is that the way he kills the robots was so repetitive and he never had any trouble dispatching them. The no lines within the context of him needing to work with the girl or use the environment to kill the robots might have worked.

Did you know that Boris Johnson did actually wrote a Indiana Jones styled script titled 'Mission to Assyria'. He sent it to a director but he received no answer. He wanted the female lead to be played by Angelina Jolie or Scarlett Johansson. I saw it on Have I Got News For You.

There's already an in-depth comment in here about Bollywood and other film industries in India that I completely agree with, but I would like to chip in as a Indian-Canadian to say it is true that Bollywood consists of only Hindi speaking films, any other language (ie. Punjabi, Tamil, Urdu, etc..) does not fall under Bollywood and are basically from different industries. So because this movie is initially in Tamil or Telugu, it's not considered Bollywood. Similarly, the Apu trilogy is in Bengali so it's also not Bollywood either. Tamil films are considered Tollywood I believe, also Tamil is said as Tam-ill, like rhyming with camel. As someone who grew up in Canada on western media and doesn't even speak my mother-tongues, Indian movies as a whole no matter the language, are always difficult to get through because they want to hit every beat they possibly can with an insane length. I would say this is because people in India who buy movie tickets want to get the most out of their buck because a lot of people aren't well off there. So a typical Indian film with try to have singing, dancing, comedy, drama, romance, and action rolled into one to provide an ultimate experience. Some of them even put an especially unnecessary musical number with an especially saucy light skinned brown women because some men just go to the cinema to see women (insert ex-porn star Sunny Leone and her film appearances). This is sorta similar to why there were so many musicals in the 30's - 50's in Hollywood, it's like you're getting the utmost entertainment for the money you spend. If you want to specifically see Bollywood films that are decent I would recommend something like Devdas (2002) or Swades (2004). A lot of 90's films and below are much better, they at least have some charm, it's all pretty gone to shit sometime around 2004 rip

With FNAF, I think it's fair to use it as the example to describe things like Willy's Wonderland because it's genuinely what crystallized the postmodern Creepy Theme Park genre. Whereas before it might have been more in the direction of creepy clowns, which probably has a couple defining movies pre-chuck-e-cheese becoming huge, now the creepy theme park type of aesthetic is more about animatronics and that aspect of the Uncanny Valley and shit. The guy making FNAF has gone a bunch of directions with it too, the camera game is what blew up but there's like some crazy jrpg style one, I think there might have been a dating Sim? That sounds like a fan game though. It's definitely an ip, not just a single very popular game, and because it is so massively recognized, it sort of crystallizes the zeitgeist of creepy animatronics. Adam's point also applies pretty aptly to Kaiju / Giant Monster movies and stuff though. Could we just call them all Godzilla movies? Big robots or huge ants have been around since before that, they can be in all different kinds of movie, but at this point it's either literally about godzilla or it's trying to play to that audience, with godzilla tropes

I can't really sell Bahubali 2 to you guys, but it does help things make slightly more sense. Then again it does illustrate the issues with pacing I find in a lot of Indian epics, only over 6hours instead of 3. Incidentally, one thing I liked about these movies was that the 'Bollywood" dance number interjections were pretty low in number and restrained compared to a lot of others I've seen. So if you thought they were distracting in this, just wait. Anyway, despite being two films you can see there's three 'acts' if you will. There's young Bahubali discovering who he is; there's the huge flashback explaining the rivalry of his father and his father's brother and then his father's death; then there's young Bahubali reclaiming the mantle and heading in to get revenge etc. The first act is fairly bloated, then the second act is split over two films, taking so long the end is kind of "And now you know what happened" "OK let us go do the final battle and take back the kingdom!". Uneven is the minimum word for it. The interesting rebels and Tamannah's character from the first film are sidelined, even though they are 'there' they get virtually none of the narrative attention built up and you've probably forgotten them by the time they come back, to name but one problem. It must know its audience I guess. And I get a vague sense of the many cultural references that I don't understand (Which make me think the way to look at it is Lord of The Rings in battle/visual terms, but Excalibur in most other respects)

I liked the performances in Malcom and Marie, but in the long run it got kinda... boring? Some of the monologues felt too much like Sam Levinson ranting about his own opinions, not like a couple fighting. Someone has said this already, but it definitely would've worked better as a short.

And yeah it is a cultural thing but it's not the ONLY culture. I think that's what people need to understand. Just like I'm sure cowboy hats and guns aren't the only thing about American culture. Baahubali probably wouldn't be popular if it wasn't so over the top because the target audience isn't people like me.
