yeah, I liked seeing young Indy too, it really got me hooked as a kid. but when I got older I realized I didn’t like the fact that they explained a whole bunch of stuff that didn’t really need explaining. like “this is why he’s afraid of snakes” and “this is how he got a whip” and “that’s where he got the hat.” it would have sat better with me if they had just done a “this is when he got the hat” and left it at that, but the stuff with the snakes and the whip just felt really contrived. @@randomguy6679 But he isn't reviewing pop culture here, he's meant to be reviewing the actual film. You can criticize pop culture as a whole, absolutely, but Adam is being negative about Raiders as a film over those things, which is unfair and just not a review of the actual film. Does that make sense?? Adam literally criticises part of Last Crusade just because it reminded him of Uncharted 3, how is Uncharted 3 being derivative the fault of the film?

@@HOTD108_ I mean, ive had a films impact ruined by pop culture before and it can make it harder to look at the film in of itself. For example, I really wish pop culture didnt ruin the sixth senses ending, and while the film is still good knowing that twist beforehand thanks to popular culture ruined a lot of the films impact for me. Sure, the film obviously cant help it, but hes the kind of guy that rates films based on his personal experience and attachment more than anything else. And from that perspective, it makes sense at least to me.
@HOTD108_
@HOTD108_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@randomguy6679 I disagree. I think it's pretty easy to seperate the actual film from that stuff. All you have to do is just only talk about the elements that are actually IN the film. To use your example, The Sixth Sense, you can absolutely say that the film's twist didn't effect you as much because you were told about it before hand, that is 100% valid, but if you were to review the film, it would be a bad faith argument to actually criticize the film for something that is actually the fault of wider pop culture. To put it another way, you're no longer reviewing the film, you're just reviewing the pop culture around it, and that's not a film review.

i found this episode so interesting because Adum, who’s seen as the harshest of the group, liked Temple of Doom the most, which is widely regarded as the weakest movie in the trilogy (we don’t talk about crystal skull). Temple is alright, but what really weakens it (for me at least) is the pacing. it moves along nicely until the middle, where we hit a really drawn out part of the movie, and then it goes into the fast-paced final act and it gives you whiplash. then eventually the final act starts to drag too. Raiders and Last Crusade are both very well paced, and I think this movie would have been solid if they had cut out like 10 minutes of excess footage that wasn’t necessary. I still like it as a hangover movie or a guilty pleasure, and I can see why Adum liked it. he found something different and that was what entertained him.

no character development for Indy they say. Yet he is a criminal in the chronologically first movie, then works as a professor in the second and third., rekindles his love with that woman he had something before in the second and reconciles with his father in the third. I also find it funny how they acknowledge it being an hommage to the serials of earlier times, yet Adam seems to critices them for doing exactly that ;) also: I read that Marion is meant to be 25 in the first movie and their first fling happened 10 years ago. yeah, kinda problematic when you think about it :)

The moment in the first one when Indiana shoots the swordsman it's actually a last minute rewrite. Indiana was supposed to fight the swordsman in a complete action scene, but Harrison Ford was sick with dysentery and could only film for 10 minutes before having to run to the toilet in his trailer. Honestly, that usage of main/heroic theme in 1 is veeery reminiscent of action series like Zorro and the myriad of westerns and adventure shows from the 50-60s television. I've always seen it as an intentional homage in Raiders (though not sure why this got changed in 2 and 3). I still prefer 1 and 3 myself overall, but I'd agree in a heartbit that the music was used much more conventionally/professionally in 2.

Listening to Adam talk about music is often quite painful. What he's referring to is variations on a theme, and each time the theme is used, it's being used in a very different way from the original, it's reharmonized in a way that gives it a different feel from the original theme. This is a very common musical device, I can't tell if he doesn't understand it or if he is just being willingly obtuse.

Ralph and Adum saying that the Nazis were fetishized in the movie and then saying that Hydra (which starts off as a splinter group of Nazis) is somehow fine is a very strange statement. @theclassykarp3786
@theclassykarp3786 3 жыл бұрын
@Don Ossell And I am comparing the two points, which you seem to yet again be missing. If the trend of permitting racist stereotypes is "interesting" then the trend of using the Nazis for an indisputable evil is just as interesting and far more timeless. You can't pick and choose what trends are valid to be highlighted as "interesting" and the dismissal of one while promoting the other leaves room for some criticism. so no ❤️💫🧚 I am not reducing their arguments to "fighting Nazis bad and time capsules with racial violence good" I'm pointing out that choosing to describe one trend as interesting and another as uninteresting is dismissive for no necessary reason. thanks for coming to my Ted talk
@theclassykarp3786
@theclassykarp3786 3 жыл бұрын
@Don Ossell Never said I find it more interesting, I said both are equally valid takes, which you seem to finally be coming around to as well. At this point this is literally an echo chamber of "art is subjective" and there is no need to discuss that further. If you'd like to fervently defend Adum and Ralph's statements, please feel free to spend more of your time doing so, but there is no issue whatsoever with disagreeing with their takes. Which I did. As you said, any trope can be personally engaging or unengaging. You also write as if finding something tiring and overly familiar is entirely different from dismissal-it isn't. It's the cause of the dismissal. It is just as valid to dismiss the "time capsule" argument as uninteresting, which, like I said, was my point from the beginning. I really don't feel the need to continue reading a defense for something that I was never attacking to begin with. Calling these movies a "Fetishization of the Nazis" is a statement I disagree with, especially if you justify them being interesting due to their time capsule-like nature. That's that.
