Was on Hermes in 82, was sitting on the chopper on deck when the 18 climbed on board, was chatting to Michael Love the aircrewman, he was killed too along with the crew and 3 RAF lads, Bad day :(

Really nice to see these tributes. Quite sad so many passed because of accidents given what these heroes done and their level of professionalism in operations of which some that we know of and many many more nobody will ever know about. Selfless, Committed individuals that we all collectively owe so much to.

Andy Baxter was my Jnr Troop Sgt in 71 at JLR RAC Bovington. I occasionally bulled his boots. He became Jnr RSM.. It was obvious even then that he was destined for great things . A fine soldier and natural leader.

I remember getting the news of an SAS along with his American friend, I'm pretty sure it was an IED, had a big funeral for the lad. Felt horrible for his Family...

IRA said they killed over 20 SAS heard 9 but then ya had DET and MRF but last two was not special forces even though ya had 22 and other regs in them. Was 2 RTA Irland and some in uk around time of troubles

I read that the irish said 20 where killed in Ireland which i think is bollocks but you have a few lads kIA in UK & France around about the time they was over there but end of the day all brave lads the lot of them respect

An Irish priest by the name of Fr Raymond Murray wrote a book called 'The SAS in Ireland' and gives the names of over 20 SAS men killed in Northern Ireland as a result of hostile action,accidents and blue on blue.He gives their name rank and parent regiment.

@@johnroche7541 I remember whilst in Northern Ireland SSgt David J Naden was sadly killed in an RTA in june 1978.I was only 12yrs old at the time and living in Ballykelly,but remember it like yesterday.My younger brother was friends with his son..Very sad,but i'm sure there were more casualties due to road accidents......RIP....

Northern Ireland will always understandably be an enigma shrouded in secrecy. The following soldiers were killed as a result of hostile and non-hostile causes in N. Ireland. Some are confrmed SAS fatalities. I do apologise for not having the following in chronological order(A)3|9|1972. In a blue on blue shootout between uniformed soldiers and undercover soldiers there is 2 fatalities. Royal Marine Robert Cutting is the uniformed soldier killed but there is no identity for the undercover soldier.(B) 20|3|1974.Two undercover soldiers are shot dead by the RUC in South Armagh in a blue on blue incident. The two soldiers(undercover) in question are Cpl Michael Herbert & Cpl John Cotton. What is intriguing about these two soldiers is that they dont appear in Toby Harnden's book "Bandit Country" which chronicles the deaths of all the security forces in S.Armagh due to both hostile and non hostile related causes.For a book that is so meticulously researched why were these 2 soldiers omitted?(C)14|4|1974.Captain Anthony Pollen an undercover soldier is shot dead in Derry. Undercover soldiers are thought to be SAS.(D)20|7|1974. The IRA murder Brian Shaw(ex Royal Irish Ranger). According to the IRA he admitted to being in the SAS under interrogation.(D) 7|4|1975 Captain killed in RTA accident in Co.Tyrone and remains unidentified to this day(E)1|4|1982. Two undercover soldiers Sgt Michael Bunbridge & Captain Michael Ward killed by IRA in Derry.(F)21|2|1984. Sgt Paul Oram killed by IRA in Derry. He was secretly awarded the MM in 1983. The veil of secrecy was lifted on 31|7|1985 when his widow received it publicly by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.(G)2|12|1984 L/Cpl Alaister Slater killed by IRA. The government officially stated he served with the Para's but his obituary appears in "Mars & Minerva"(Vol 7. No.2). He was the NCO training officer who appeared in the BBC series "The Para's" shortly before his death. As you know those splendid sky warrior chaps provide the nucleus of the SAS recruits.He is a confirmed SAS casualty.(H)8|2|1983.Cpl Tommy Palmer killed near Lurgan in RTA. Veteran of the Falklands and the Iranian embassy siege. Confirmed SAS casualty.(I)17|2|1978.Former SAS Lt. Iain Lloyd killed when helicopter was shot down in S.Armagh when the IRA used a M-60 machine gun.(J)16|3|1978 L/Cpl David Jones(undercover soldier)killed by IRA in Derry.They believed he was SAS . There is a description of the gun battle in David Beresford's book "Ten Men Dead" (K)5|10|1978. Undercover soldiers Sgt John Rorser & Cpl Michael Bloor are killed when their car collided with an Army lorry.(L)7|6|1978. Staff Sgt D.J.Nadden killed in Derry as a result of RTA. He is a confirmed SAS casualty.(M)2|5|1980. Captain Herbert Westmacott shot dead by IRA in Derry. He is a confirmed SAS casualty.(O)19|3|1976. Undercover soldiers Sgt.M.G. Peacock & Cpl Douglas Whitfield killed in a RTA near Newry.(P) 14|12|1977. Undercover soldier Paul Harmon shot dead by IRA in Belfast. They believe he was SAS.((Q)11|8|1978. Undercover soldier Alan Swift killed by IRA in Derry. They believe he was SAS.(R)11|4|1983. IRA claim they shot and killed a SAS man in Derry. I doubt it. There is also instances of undercover soldiers being wounded. The Derry Journal & Belfast Telegraph are good newspapers to go through. Stay safe in these challenging times.

@@seanmckinley522 Hi Sean. In terms of the casualty list I gave yesterday I have a little bit more info in relation to Sgt Paul Oram. In an article under the heading "The SAS Heroes Who Dared & Died" by Andrew Parker & Paul Hooper for the "Sun" newspaper 16th July 1985 they identify him as a member of the SAS. The IRA claim that Sapper Ted Stuart(Royal Irish Rangers) who was killed 2nd October 1972 was SAS. The IRA have always maintained that the following soldiers that were killed were SAS or serving with regiments associated with them. Captain Robert Nairc who was killed 15th May 1977. Sgt Hubert Shingleston who was killed as a result of a firearms accident 25th November 1977. Corporal Robert Howes & Corporal Derek Wood who were killed 19th March 1988. Take care.
