The song itself is already emotional, but when Dame Shirley sings it the emotion becomes extraordinarily strong, I feel as if I was in the story she was having her mind while singing. Dame Shirley has this power to make her listeners feel what she feels in the song.

Magnificent! cannot watch the end without bursting into tears myself. I believe she is remembering her first husband, Kenneth Hume. They married in 1961 and he became her manager, but they sadly divorced in 1965. Shirley announced her re-engagement to her ex husband at the Pigalle nightclub later the same year, but they didn't re-marry. Kenneth was still her manager when he died in tragic circumstances in 1967.

Richard: She also may be remembering the tragic death of her daughter Samantha in 1985 under suspicious circumstances. The cause, including foul play, was never determined. You have great insight into emotions, and what is true versus just an act. Although Shirley would have made a great actress, what you are seeing here is genuine emotion. Shirley's daughter, Samantha, was found dead beneath the Bristol Bridge at 21 years old back in 1985. Some say it was suicide, but Shirley contends it was a homicide. After about a year, she tried to come back on the concert tour, but when she went to sing the first note....NOTHING. She lost her voice! It took time and a vocal coach to get her voice back again. A decade earlier, Shirley also found out that her first husband was gay. They tried to make a go of it, but it didn't work out, and finally they divorced. A few years later he committed suicide. Although the marriage didn't work out, they still loved each other in their own special way. When Shirley was much younger a former boyfriend broke into a hotel where she was staying and held her at gun point all night, and threatened to kill her. Obviously, she made it through, but that was a harrowing night. These are just a few of the bad memories in Shirley's life that have affected her emotions when singing sad songs...
