Thank you Jim and MItch. Very Interesting. I Repaired some Sash windows a few years ago and Jim is now showing what I did wrong. At least I know for next time :) Rightly or wrongly, I used a thin strip of plastic tongue and groove floor jointer as the 'Rats tail. This also makes a good 'Snake', for electrical cable pulling. Thanks team, I wait for the next episode.

Hi Mitch and Jim great viewing your don’t trash the sash .I have learned a lot.do you have a solution for sash exterior sills that have cracks on the surface ,they have not been primed or painted for years .regards Derek
@mitchwoodwork2 жыл бұрын
Jim is the expert, but if I was faced with the problem: If the wood is sound, you could prime, fill with linseed putty, then complete the painting. Basically breathable, non-rigid filler and compatible paint.

I use a stanley knife to cut through the paint between the beading and the window it makes a cleaner removel with regards paintwork especially if I am returning them in place again, I try to pry the beading off with a wide thin scraper to reduce potential damage to the wood "try" lol

Sounds sensible. Nice to save it if you can.

Great job, really high skilled work and some useful tips! But missing just one thing, how do you deal with those massive spiders you often find lurking around in these windows?

The victorian windows weren't glued together just wedged together using small pieces of wood.

Beautiful video, Mitch. The windows look as if they are from the Victorian era. Had something views on TV, the company had most such houses Refurbished / Redeveloped.
@mitchwoodwork8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gunter. They are Victorian style for sure, but may have just been after her reign, thinking of the street they are in. In a row of perhaps twenty houses, I think this was just one of three that still had the original windows - the rest being uPVC!
@gunterschone84028 жыл бұрын
Here you go, Mitch. Most houses have PVC windows (plastic windows with aluminum core). Because the houses are to be tight, it may indeed nowhere drag (air come through). Had indeed earlier in the wooden windows, were the somewhat leaky. Because wood working yes (heat = wood expands. Cold = timber contracts.) And earlier was so heated with coal, which had led might indeed little fumes into the living room.
@mitchwoodwork8 жыл бұрын
Günter Schöne Now with no ventilation, moisture gets trapped in the room and mould grows! Interestingly, with the modern seals fitted to these windows, there could be the same problem?
@gunterschone84028 жыл бұрын
That's right, and thanks to the "modern" technology (cement, plaster, paint, etc.), the house walls hardly breathe. Have therefore my basement painted with lime paint

Hi. It was called a putty knife. I know that Footprint Tools still produce them here in the UK.

Compared to mitch's delicate and precise approach to woodworking, this in comparison is like watching Jeremy clarkson's guide to smashing an old window... in the world!!
@mitchwoodwork8 жыл бұрын
HaHa - I can just picture that! It may look brutal at this stage, but the only show surfaces to suffer were those that were due to be replaced. I think I'm right in saying that no glass was broken by accident over the full five window bay.

"Some idiots screw them in and you lose the will to live" referring to the stop bead - not only did they screw them in on the set I'm currently working on but they siliconed the top sash shut. Put half a day into it and it'sstill not moving. The muppets.

BREAK IT!!!....then make it...much easier...especially when you have 40 of them to do in a section 8 housing project or foreclosure!!......and the house is from 1917,
