The PROUDEST performance of my life.
Thank you Kesha for writing this amazing song (“Praying”) from such a personal and powerful place . It continues to take on new meaning and resonance!🌈
Based on the “magic” costume reveals of medieval church theater (which in turn were inspired by ancient queer spiritual shows) I wanted to use my dress as a tool for storytelling. The red dress represents the judgement placed on so many people by hate (and often religion), and as it lifts it reveals the purity and truth that exists behind the lies. If we can just be seen as we truly are, we can refract new possibilities for light, love, and joy all around us.

I teach at a school where our motto is "Meet each student where they are." Sometimes that is over horses or scuba diving, but for one, it was RuPauls drag race. I am 76, and that night when Sasha's red rose petals fell as her voice rose.... I was just so proud... like she was one of my own grandchildren.

As a 40-year-old gay man who came out at 15, I have witnessed the evolution of our community from the shadows to a place of greater acceptance and visibility, though not without tribulations. Shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race have illuminated our culture and shown it in the best light. The new HBO show “We’re Here” is another underrated gem that captures the essence of our community. Sasha Velour’s finale drag performance to Kesha’s “Praying” epitomizes the true art of drag. It’s not just catchy and fun; it’s a profound expression of woman impersonation and the broader art of drag. I watched this episode today and was moved to tears numerous times. I was especially moved by Father Joshua and his calling drag a ministry. The amount of confidence he has in himself and his congregation to open his church for these iconic queens is amazing. Latrice, Priyanka and Sasha, along with production, were so respectful with their song choices. It was just the right mix of messaging, performance and celebration. This closing performance by Sasha really wrapped it up stupendously. What it must have felt like to have been in the audience that night. I know I would have experienced all kinds of emotions just like I did at home tonight. Really beautiful, really powerful, and most of all really necessary. Hats off to HBO Max and everyone involved in making this show. It is more important than ever.

Whenever I felt like I couldn’t handle what was happening, the pain he was dishing out, I’d watch it and I’d feel so much stronger. This performance does this for drag itself.
