You people can watch me humming a tune, and I'm humming a tune while you're gawking. Maybe you tip me and it makes you feel cool, in this boring little town I'm just your little fool. But you'll never guess to who you're talking. No, you couldn't ever guess to who you're talking. Then one night, there's a scream in the night. And you say "Thoughts and prayers are in your heart!" And you see me kind of gasping instead of humming, and you say "When the hell is she gonna start?" I'll tell you. There's a ship, A black freighter. With a skull on it's masthead, Will be coming in. Oh. You gentlemen can say "Hey Bitch! On with the show!" "Don't be selfish! What's wrong with you? Entertain us!" And you toss me your tips and look out to the ships. But I'm reading the news while I'm paying my dues, So there's nobody off the hook here tonight! Nobody's off the hook here, darling. Nobody. Then one night, there's a scream in the night. And you say "This noise is ruining our fun." And you see me kind of staring out the window, And you say "This generation is so young." Oh, I'll tell you. There's a ship, The black freighter. Turns it's guns on the harbor, and you're in her sights. Now you fuckers can wipe off that smile from your face, 'cause every structure in town is a flat one. This whole fucking place will be down to the ground, only this cheap old stage standing up safe and sound. And you cry "What's so special about that one?!" Yes, that's what you say! What's so special about that one? And the ship, The black freighter. Runs a flag up it's masthead, And a scream rings the air! By noon time the dock is a-swarming with friends, coming out of the ghostly freighter. They move in the shadows where no one can see. And they're chaining up people and bringing them to me, asking me "Which one's are guilty?!" Asking me "Which one's are guilty?" Noon by the clock, And so still at the dock. You can hear a fog horn miles away. And in that quiet of death you hear me say... "All of them." Oops. And the ship, The black freighter. Disappears out to sea, and on it is me.

Sasha has got me obsessed with this song now. And after researching a bit into the original song (that i didn’t know beforehand), i found amazing details! She changed the lyrics of the original song, just a tiny bit... but just enough to make this velour, to make this current, draggy, political. I’ve been thinking of different interpretations of this but I’m pretty sure that it’s about the political state that we live in and violence in the world and how everybody’s ignoring the problem. At least that’s how I interpret it, what do you guys think?! It’s absolutely fascinating. The way sasha makes everything deeper and makes us reflect on so much stuff. Such a smart and amazing queen.

The art is there to make you think, the queerness is just the delivery vector. It's humanzing for the viewer to see drag as just one thread is such a rich tapestry, an integral but not central dimension of a whole. This opens a door for the rest of us on two esoteric but prolific creative traditions. Thank you, for making me so jealous. I'm awake.

A lot of these DR girls are putting out songs seemingly just to get them remixed and create a buzz. They generally rely on a catchy hook to carry poorly crafted lyrics--it's like damn, you couldn't put a bit more thought into writing this thing? It's only three minutes long. But, Sasha is different, avant-garde. Her art meshes with my sensibilities. So, I'm probably being overly-critical of some of the other girls because what they do is less interesting to me.

5:40 - AMAZING delivery of that "Oops." I'm not sure who did this translation of Brecht's text (the original is "Hoppla," which does indeed mean "oops"), but the most common one (Marc Blitzstein's) has "That'll learn ya," which I've never liked. I respect Blitzstein greatly, but Sasha has confirmed that sticking closer to the original is the way to go here!! ("Whoopsie" is closer still, with two syllables, but wouldn't be nearly as chilling.)
