Technically, it’s called a set or pair of compasses. In the same way that a pair of scissors are not “a scissor”.

It's a compass. A protractor is a half circle of plastic with all the degrees to make angles: 45°, 180° is a flat line, 90°, etc. Those buttons are adorable! If you have a teddy bear stamp or bunny or something -- would be so cute for a baby card as the eyes of the critter.

The tool is a compass. If you want to fit a pen in it, I would suggest getting the circle master compass. It works great for pens of all sizes and is a high quality compass. It is the one I recommended to all of my geometry students. Yes, I am a math teacher...retired now though. I have to admit I had a good chuckle when you were trying to think of the name and used all different descriptions for the compass. :)

Sorry to be a pain in the bum here; strictly speaking, what you're using is a pair of compasses, which is a navigational tool, also used for technical drawing. The word comes from Latin. A compass is the round thing with N E S W marked, from the top (12 o'clock) going clockwise. It's what you need to use maps accurately. It's essential if you plan to walk through woods, or places with no real landmarks; as you find North, work out where you're going and take that direction, while keeping the pointer on N. If you don't have a wayfinder, and you can't assume that you'll have a mobile signal, it's seriously easy to walk in circles, and be hopelessly lost. I love Wales, and my roots are in the south. I hope you'll visit again.
@SashaReade Жыл бұрын
Thank you for that great detailed explanation :) And yes we hope to be back again soon

@@SashaReade Thanks, Sasha. I know it comes across as pedantic, that's not my intention at all. Both pieces of equipment continue to be vital, in a lot of areas, and without them, sailors and soldiers would have struggled to survive until relatively recently. Airmen, maybe not so much, by the time they became part of the armed forces. I don't know if training is still given in the use of these items, but I would hope there's something instead of technology, if it fails. The Royal Navy still use sextants for navigation by the stars.
