Actually, it's a little bit of both. Medieval depictions of "Satan" drew from earlier pagan deities and gave him an inhuman, almost monstrous form. Paradise Lost, which cast him in more sympathetic light (though at his core he really is still a dick since at point acknowledges he's the cause of his own misery but refuses to stop) and "humanized" him into the more understated, "Sexy Satan" depiction that would continue to grow and evolve over time. Curiously enough if you look back on some of the medieval depictions of Angels they also look pretty weird and monstrous, getting their own more face lifts of appearing beautiful and alluring in modern times. The Prophecy films run with the idea that the distinction between Angels and Demons is actually less about "good" and "evil" and more...political outlook for lack of a better term. At their core they are all the same thing, they just take differing stances on how to deal with humans and all of them can be ruthless, blood thirsty, and right bastards if needed. Thus any aesthetic difference Thomas, Gabriel, and Lucifer are going to be negligible at best.

"I love you more than Jesus" that line at the end of the film always made my hair stand up.

I just love how he does not say "Hello...I'm the Devil, heard of me?" He just makes his intro short by saying he was the first Angel. Some would think the Devil would be over dramatic when introducing himself, but in this he doesn't. He just straight up says a fact that gives a big hint to who he is and moves on instead of waiting for the human to guess.

I don't know if they wanted lucifer to be portrayed as an antihero but in my opinion, he seems to be like an antihero for reluctantly saving humanity from Gabriel's plan. Viggo gave lucifer such a demeanor that it makes you wonder if this is what the devil is really like. One minute he threatens her then offers to help her but reminds her that he doesn't give a damn about humans, only to preserve his version of the balance. Viggo makes lucifer out to be brilliant, clever but threatening. The most etheryal version of such an iconic character in film and idiom in religion.

+Lucifers Apprentice What Gabriel wants, is his own hell to rule over. Lucifer knows that if there is a second hell, he would have to go to war with that realm, in order to compete for bad souls across the universe. The collecting of bad souls, is what keeps is furnace running, like constantly putting more coal in the train engine to keep it going along a track called time. Lucifer is the conductor of this train called hell. Gabriel wants his own train to conduct, but he cant take Lucifers train, because god made that train for Lucifer. So Gabriel has found a different way to get his own train. The only problem is, there is only enough coal for one train, not two. That's the best way I can put it, hope that helps.

His disposition towards her is unique to other movie Devils. The way he speaks, the things he says, even his mannerisms are all so subtly unnatural. The typical depiction of the Devil is as that of a business man. He comes at you with a smile and friendliness. There's an old saying that you wouldn't know that you were talking to the Devil unless i told ya. Walter Huston's performance in All That Money Can Buy was the perfect depiction of this idea; Quite scary to say the least. However, what makes Viggo's Lucifer so unique and scary in his own right, is that in the film The Prophecy, He is not trying to fool Catherine or you the viewer into believing he is a just a generous business man trying to Helo you out. Oh God no... He is very much revealing himself as Satan, and he needs to talk to you about some real shit, or otherwise he will fuck you up. It's like he hates having to talk to a human. There's lots of little subtle cues in his body language and his voice that give off an aura of pure Hatred towards catherine. The eating of the flower was very symbolic of this. This is one of the most interesting, unsettling, and just plain magnificent depictions of The Devil I've ever seen in anything. Viggo scares me.

I'm always reminded of the quote from the first Exorcist movie, when the priest attempts to nag the demon within the girl to free itself from its restraints. _"That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras."_ The best depictions of supernatural make do with less, for both darkness and mystery scare human beings more than anything else. A demon conjuring hellfire and lobbing it like an imp from *DooM*? Meh, scary and thrilling but not truly terrifying. The Devil himself appearing at a moment of need and spiritual anguish with offers of guidance and revelation (while managing to keep his victim on their heels for the length of the conversation) and potential assistance? Bone-shakingly unnerving and deeply sinister.

Lucifer means "Bringer of light" in Latin and he is seen as Venus, the morning star. In Hebrew his "God granted " name is "Samhiel." He converted God's daughter, who was then known as "Lilith" the first demon. Most scholars think there were attempts to literally "demonize" the pagan gods of the societies around ancient Judea.
