Perfect! Absolutely perfect! I especially like how you showed the effect that burnishing the gold leaf has. All the other vids I've seen of this technique leave that part to the imagination. Great work!

@@JennFrost what are you using as a back up black. I tried using one shot paint but it just chipped off during leaf removal. My problem maybe my use of imitation leaf though.

@@JennFrost hi what is the yellow gold paint you paint over all the reverse gold leaf?, thanks
@samsmith4216 Жыл бұрын
@@blakewilcox313using one shot straight out of the can works. When you remove the excess gold use a little Bon Ami soap on your wet cotton and the leaf comes off easier. Be careful not to drown the job as it will get under your paint and lift it off the glass. Wrong that wet cotton out real good before you use the bon Ami powder.

I learn't this process 70 years ago. I'm very impressed with your outlining on glass which is a very challenging process. You need total concentration and you make it look very easy. I'm not sure you can handle loose leaf gold leaf with your fingers ?
@JennFrost3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear from a seasoned sign painter! It's not real gold leaf, just imitation. I didn't realize you don't use imitation gold for water gilding when I made this, so always learning! Thanks for watching!

awesome video! what was the liquid you applied to the glass to make the gold stick?
@samsmith4216 Жыл бұрын
It was a mixture of water and most likely 2 gelatin capsules heated up so the capsules melt into a solution that dries adhering the metal to the glass. It's called Water Size in this state.

So I read in the info bix that you used imitstion gold leaf. So the same finish can be achieved with the gold foil looking things or it has to be real gold leafs?

Hi, First of all, praise! Such a lovely video and very useful. I'm about to start my first attempt and was wondering what yellow paint you used? Just normal acrylic? And just out of curiosity, do you know if you could use transfer gold for this sort of gilding?
@JennFrost3 жыл бұрын
It's 1Shot Imitation Gold enamel paint. And as far as transfer gold, this was imitation gold leaf, but genuine gold leaf works best and will give you the mirror finish we all want. Thanks so much for watching!

Great result, but may i give you a good advice? Gild the letters only (plus what we can't avoid). And cut out the gold. A scissor and the in between sheets should not damage the gold. As you segment the gold, it will stick better and more clean. You will avoid almost ALL scratches, which in the end gives a much better result. IT LOOKS GREAT, and it's only an advice. Plus you actually save a lot of gold cutting the gold "to shape". Other than that, it looks great. Best of wishes, love and care from a fellow artist!

Thank you so much for the feedback :) This was actually my first attempt at water gilding and I've learned a LOT since then. I will keep cutting the gold into more manageable pieces in mind for my next gilding project! Thanks for watching!

why does the gold leaf start to peel off when I try burnishing it?! Am I using too much pressure?

It could be that you're applying too much pressure or that you didn't use enough gelatin when you made the water size. I'd try adding a bit more and test. Good luck!
