News from Posta, I came to hear?
Your daughter's wedding is drawing near!
To Gangaram, she'll be bound,
What kind of groom is he, I'll expound.
Not bad a match, I do declare,
Though his complexion is quite dark, beware!
His face resembles, if you must know,
A rather peculiar creature, the owl, oh no!
Education and intellect, you ask?
Well, the boy has quite the knack!
Nineteen times he attempted the matriculation test,
Though success remained elusive, alas, the rest!
Wealth and property, you may be curious?
He is quite poor, I'm afraid, not very luxurious.
His family, they are a strange bunch,
One is mad, another a boorish lout!
The third is a scoundrel, in jail he rots,
For forging notes, a crime he plots.
The youngest plays the tabla, in a traveling troupe,
Earning five meagre taka, that's his sad coup.
Gangaram himself suffers from a terrible plight,
With malaria and anaemia , he's a sorry sight!
But they claim to be of high caste,
Descendants of the great Kangsha, no less, a royal blast!
Some connection to Shyama Lahiri of Bonagram,
That's the story they tell, though it sounds quite a scam.
Nevertheless, a groom you have found,
So, what more can you ask for, I'll be bound?
