Thats a great Video! I just love the slate stuff!

Thanks! Yeah, the Slate Digital plugins are all really great. I’m still curious about the FG73 preamp drive knob though. It’s really strange that it does basically nothing until you get to about 62, then it jumps like crazy. 🤔

It was a very useful presentation. Thanks.

Also I might add that if you are on a budget I can recommend Analogue Obsession Plugins. There are plenty that will give you saturation for a very low price. Bearing in mind that the world has gone crazy and everything seems to have gone up in price. Again love this channel Jeremy!

💯 I love the Analog Obsession stuff. I have a recent video that offers a free Reaper mix template using a ton of AO plugins.

Thanks! Yeah, when I first figured out this trick to visualize harmonics I ran a ton of plugins through it. It’s cool to be able to actually see what harmonics are being created.

Fyi, you can currently get the HG-2 Blackbox tube saturator for free through Plugin Alliance. Some other nice free plugs in that bundle too, like a shadow hills mastering compressor. Even if you don't use the compressor, it has 3 transformer modes that you can simply drive hard for some saturation. Again it's completely free until 4/26 through plugin alliance. Edit: Made this comment before I even saw the blackbox in the video haha. An absolute must have right now for the low price of $0.00

I gotta be honest… saturation/tape emulation has gotta be one of the most overrated/overused/crutches in modern mixing… so many people are getting tricked into thinking their mix is “better” because it’s LOUDER. NO ONE is mentioning the number one thing you need to do: level match and compare… and I think if people REALLY did that appropriately and listened critically, all they will find is that their mixes are much more bloated, with transients completely rounded off and softer: the exact opposite of what I want Atleast, with a modern metal production. Just something for people to think about. Don’t get tricked because the RMS level is higher and it sounds more “alive”.
@JeremyFoxMusic2 жыл бұрын
Tell us how you really feel. If it’s not working for you and your mixes, don’t use it. There’s a reason that so many plugins simulate analog hardware though. Harmonics aren’t just for making things louder, they actually change ip the feel and character as well. Knowing how to use these things to your advantage is just another tool in the toolbox. Use it if it works, don’t if it doesn’t. Don’t try to make people think it’s a bad thing though, because it’s not. This is why the thumbnail for the video says, “BIGGER, FATTER, THICKER MIXES” and doesn’t just say, “LOUDER MIXES”.
@joeblow12292 жыл бұрын
@@JeremyFoxMusic isn’t that what this is about though? Honesty? I think many would be surprised if they knew how many modern metal producers, Atleast the ones whose mixes I love, don’t use that stuff. My point is, people who are NEW at this are easily tricked. You’re right, they DONT just make things louder etc, but many don’t realize you need to level match and listen critically. It’s just extremely easy to get carried away with it. And newer producers/mixers are easily fooled, we’ve all been there and know this.
@JeremyFoxMusic2 жыл бұрын
Nothing I’ve covered in this video is untrue or dishonest, so I’m not sure what you’re referring to about honesty. Also, feel free to share your favorites mixes that you know don’t use any saturation/harmonics.
@joeblow12292 жыл бұрын
@@JeremyFoxMusic don’t get defensive man, I wasn’t saying you were being dishonest, nor was I implying that in the least. My point about honesty was directed at the fact you joked and said tell me how you really feel, and I did. You’re connected, you know people. Ask sneap, ask Richardson, ask anyone at audiohammer ( and not eyal). Im sure you’ll be surprised at the answer. This wasn’t to discredit you or the info you are bringing, saturation has its place. My point is simply to remind readers and newbies that level matching is critical, and being honest with oneself about it something is truly “better” or not. Many forms of saturation are just a great way to destroy your low end and make it boomy, lack clarity, and take away punch in the mix by softening transients: but not always in a good way. Flattening/neutering guitars, low mid build up, making cymbals over the top washy… that’s all I’m saying. Many guys nowadays slap these things on their mixes and just think it’s better, when it’s really not if you listen critically. Again, this wasn’t directed at you or an attack on you at all, I enjoy your channel a lot.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying. I agree on the point of overuse/overdoing it with saturation. It can definitely end up hurting things if it’s not used properly. Hopefully some of the points I made in the video regarding use cases and the examples at the end might help with that a bit.
