Milton Berle never visited the set, he was a host later on. The Garrett Morris song was part of a sketch in a later episode hosted by British comic Peter Cook, where they had prison talent show auditions. The Julia Child bit was the cold open in a later episode. The construction worker bit was from the Lily Tomlin episode later on. Belushi held out until the last moment just so he could get signed by Bernie Brillstein as his manager, because he was Lorne's manager too. Henson's puppets were actually as dark as the show was at the time.

I watched the first episode when it originally aired. It was as groundbreaking for variety/skit television as Nirvana's _Smells Like Teen Spirit_ video was for music. As you mentioned, there are several books chronicling the early history of SNL. One of them which I used to have was encyclopaedic and had tons of inside scoop direct from the sources interviewed - don't remember the book's title.

One of the best sketches of that first season is the Star Trek episode with guest host Elliot Gould. Chevy Chase plays Spock, Dan Aykroyd plays Scottie, and John Belushi nails it as Captain Kirk. I still contend that one of the best SNL episodes of all time was The Rutles All You Need Is Cash. I believe that was season 2.

I ADORED this movie. Saw it twice in the theatres.

I'm a TV nerd so I loved the reaction to this, and I was also disappointed in how we didn't get a lot of the girls in this because Gilda Radner was always my favorite!

Johnny Carson had a vindictive side. Just ask Joan Rivers.
